It's a "fair" trade that we "should" make in terms of expected value on each asset in a 1 for 1, but I don't think it makes a ton of sense for the Habs unless you're extremely low on Slafkovsky ever becoming even a 2nd line winger and just want to get rid of him for the maximum plausible return.

IMO they're both wingers on a competing team and I don't think Zegras is good enough to give up on Slafkovsky's upside potential and unique possible fit at the top of the lineup. If we were talking Clayton Keller then sure, but Zegras isn't Keller yet and I don't know if he'll ever get there.

What would you offer for Zegras if you were Hughes and Zegras were available?

Definitely not any of
Slaf, Dach, CC, Suzuki, Reinbacher...

Newhook, Mailloux & Hutson I'd be very wary of unless the + was minimal...

Any of Harris, Ylonen, Roy, Heineman, Farrell, Barron, Engstrom Mesar, Strubble, '24 first (top 5 protected), '25 first (no protection), Flames 1st (no protection) and other picks/prospects/roster players in our organization

Flames 1st, Heineman, Harris & Dvorak for Zegras would be the offer i'd start with.

But no question it's a quantity for quality deal. Our top quality prospects and NHL talent I'm more bullish on than Zegras as far as long ng term contending rosters go.

His connection to CC and his potential fit in our top 6 is the appeal more than his individual likelyhood of breaking into true elite territory.

Slaf - Suzuki - Newhook
Zegras - Dach - CC

That could be a lethal top 6 core for a very big stretch, especially if he agreed to a long term deal similar to CC's... would give us a loaded top 6 with major upside for next 3-4 years at under 40M$ (until Dach/Newhook current deals expire).

Love Zegras but not sure he the kind of player we need… I’m not selling the farm right now but would definitely listen if it is a Turgeon type situation I would jump all over it.

Slaf for Zegras.

We need an elite forward to complete our top 6.

Not a Zegras or a Pinto.
Need to draft first overall. We have Slaf now, deal with it. He looks right now like a Laf.

Wow you guys would give up a lot for Zegras.

Anderson, Mailloux, Roy, 1st 2024?
Seems fair. I like Anderson, but I don't think that contract will age well. Mailloux has to climb hoops before Bettman allows him to play, Roy is a toss and that 2024 1st is great, but you get Zegras whose already an elite center.

I think he's overrated and they don't need another soft perimeter guy to add. They are better off waiting to acquire an actual difference maker

Zegras also someone who doesn't seem good in the room
Not sure about the 2nd part.

Fair enough for the first part.

I don't think we can safely assume Zegras is better than Suzuki or Caufield. He would be a fun, full of glitters add. But effectively, i don't think he is the player who would move the needle ultimately.

What would be needed to offer sheet Elias Peterson next year?

5 years @11.25 million/year?
Just trade roster players and picks for him if he's willing to come here, then get him locked up for 8 years.

Zegras is highly skilled and would be entertaining, but he's a bitch and not sure if Montreal could accommodate so many small players in the top 9. I know Suzuki is thicc and Newhook is supposedly similar, but at the end of the day they're still smaller players.

Pinto would be nice, but I wonder if the habs could swing a deal for Joseph, Sokolov and a 2nd in 2025. The downside is Montreal already has a handful of players that need to go, so there's no room for Sokolov, or Joseph.

Sokolov is a big boy with nice hands who could be an absolute menace around the net and downlow.

Joseph has size, speed, skill, he's tenacious, a bit of an agitator and he's "Un gars de chez vous"

IMO Sokolov would be a nice 3rd liner who's heavy and just frustrating with the puck downlow.

What I see in Joseph is take Byron's speed, lower it a bit and give it to Lehkonen while making him a bit bigger. He had a bad year last year where he had 4, or 5 goals.

2025 is supposed to be another deep draft. The 2nd is an asset to draft another player, or use it in a deal to acquire someone else for the team.

I don’t think we throw the farm at Zegras, id be more willing to do some sort of of 3-way with a tight cap team to save somewhere in the process (the pick or the level of prospect involved, like going from Hutson to Harris)

But i’d want him for sure
