It's hard to see another team paying a lot of anything for Price. Since the last lockout the cap floor has become a joke, it's a non issue for most teams. And Price has I think ... 4 more seasons? That's a lot.

Right now Price's contract is not a nuisance to the Habs. But maybe Hughes is planning on Gallagher LTIRing in a year or two, at which point it would become an issue.
Hughes said he wants to be able to bank his cap and so is trying To get under it with Prices hit. Price did say he didn’t care if he got traded and it’s just business when he was at the golf tournament. So maybe they gave him a heads up.

Would you make that deal?
From Montreal's standpoint sure, we need to trade quantity for quality. Only risk is giving up a top pick if Calgary falls. From Ottawa's side it really depends on how close they are to signing him, but I think this would be a fair return. I could see a team putting together a better package, but I don't think Pinto has the pedigree/projection to justify a crazy return.

I guess it's pretty much a moot point since they wouldn't trade him to us anyway.

If Gallagher goes on LTIR and Price is still with the Habs it probably means the Habs will have to use off-season LTIR, other than that it won’t be a problem.

I don’t remember the last time an insider said the Habs are planning something big and was right about it. Seems like big moves tend to happen in silence.

There isn’t many big names on the market next year in terms of UFAs other than Nylander. If it’s indeed for something big and not just the luxury of cap space, it has to be trade related.

Harris, Ylonen, Tuch, Mesar, picks etc. Habs have a wealth of assets if they wanted to make this deal. I’d be very interested.
Harris probably have some value not sure he can be the center piece to land a great player, the rest probably have very little value…Mtl has lot of asset but not sure any are in very high demand.

I think they do but I didn’t name them. It may have to include a prospect I wouldn’t want to trade so I didn’t bother with the drama that would surely have come from naming Beck, etc.

This is all fantasy anyways. Sens would never trade him to Montreal if there was another team outside the conference that would trade for him.

I think it's really a nuisance. Maybe more a annoyance.
Hughes has to wait until Price is put on in-season LTIR at the start of the season to be able to use the $9M-ish of free cap space. So that really limits what he can do in the off-season.
And i think it prevents them from accruing cap space for the TDL.
Let's say they'd rather not have it.

The Habs will have to pay something to get rid of it.
I wouldn't be surprised if they use their cap space to take another short term bad contract in return to make it happen.

Yeah, it seems that Hugues and Price already discussed the possibility of trading his contract.

Hugues planted the seed in the media via Lebrun at the GM's meeting.
I don't know if it was to mentally prepare the fans that it could happen or to broadcast to the league that he's open for business on Price. Or both.

But there's some smoke here.

The Habs need to give up a first to make that happen.

I don't know if I would do it or not. Something telling we can get more with that pick. Plus we don't have to carry Joseph caphit during years we will be competitive.

If Dach is moved to wing I would be more inclined to do it though. It may happen because I have doubts Dach is going to be high offense center. He played better on Suzuki wing last year. But it's still early in his career.

According to a recent column published by Pierre LeBrun on the site The Athletic , the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens is currently working on a big transaction aimed at freeing up money under the payroll by exchanging the contract of Carey Price to a new team.

"LeBrun believes Montreal is working on 'something big,' including a trade involving Carey Price 's contract . » - Via NHL Feeds
The ole LeBrun tropes. Another variation on “working the phones”. Hoping there’s something to it this time.

LeBrun feels like he is mostly repeating what others say or repeating old stuff again, and telling fans what they want to hear.
He’s fighting to keep his job. Posting clickbait and unverifiable mush is what will help keep his job.

These guys are stuck in a Malthusian trap. If they actually do their job (report, investigate, interview) they’ll get clicks and views but risk losing access to their subjects. If they don’t do their job and just post pablum and soft copy they retain their access and only partially lose their readers’ interest.

These survivors — Friedman, Basu, Lebrun, etc — are hanging on hoping they’ve captured the market and that it won’t shrink any more. They value their access more than their role as reporters.

The only part of that article that makes sense is that Montreal would be a good destination for him if he wants to leave Anaheim. Ducks have lots of good prospects so it isn't likely he will want to leave.
And Carlsson will never be on a 3rd line. He is already too good for that.

This tactic also increases their trade value. Matheson could net us a solid return if/when we trade him.

Yup, play Matheson to his best ability/role to get the best results both with the team and his individual stats. Another one to add to that is Anderson.

They both have terms left and the best time to move them is with 2 years left ish and the cap will be higher. Great timing IMO.

If Gallagher goes on LTIR and Price is still with the Habs it probably means the Habs will have to use off-season LTIR, other than that it won’t be a problem.

If that happens, we can use Gallagher's cap hit to get under the cap (before the season) and then move Price to LTIR after the season starts. That would allow us to accrue cap space because Price's cap hit is much higher. Same as it was with Weber/Price a few seasons ago.

Fun to talk about but doubt that happens. Maybe when Zegras is 28-30 range and might reach UFA.

Trevor Zegras in MTL would be great, entertainement for sure.

Would not like the price though or the salary that he is asking.

There’s been quite a few rumors over the last 18-months Ana are not very enthused w Zegras’ lack of defensive awareness (two way game), and from afar Verbeek seems to be focused on making his team bigger & tougher which aren’t Zegras attributes

You don't get nicknamed little ball of hate for no reason.

That said, doubt Anaheim will deal him at this point
