Price is owed 6.5, 5.5, 5.5 in signing bonus and 2 mill actual salary a year for the last 3 years.

The 6.5 signing bonus might be paid already.

So, pay 2 mill for a 10.5 mill cap hit this year.

7.5 for the next team for a 10.5 mill cap hit, so the team "saves" 3 mill.

Habs might take back a player with 3 years left the team acquiring Price sends back.
So, we save 13 million in future salary. Take back a bad contract for this season alone. Sounds like Hughes

How about we give you Francouz, you put him on LTIR(concussions/groin/etc he's cooked), and we just take DeSmith off your hands?
I agree in principle, DeSmith would probably be happy.
But realize you're getting a legit backup AND getting rid of some furniture, so maybe pay a late pick for the trouble?
You owe us for that Newhook overpay.

That makes zero sense for Montreal:

1) It doesn't sound like Francouz is done so LTIR would be a temporary measure.
2) Even if he is "cooked", Montreal is trying to use the in-season LTIR Pool calculation, having Francouz on LTIR seriously hurts their ability to do that and would necessitate another move.

Even if we were to assume that DeSmith has no value, Montreal is better off waiving him than trading him for Francouz. They're better off if he gets claimed or not.

Newhook drafted 16th, currently 10th in his draft class in lifetime points. Still worth at least 16th.

A 31st and 37th pick are worth less combined than a 16th pick.

typo. 31 + 37 is still worth less than 16 which was my point.
Agreed.... Those two picks, may not even make the big show...........we definitely did not overpay to get Newhook.
Putting him in a better position to succeed than the Avs, I think we are going to like this kids speed and play.

I'd be happy just to move his contract
Holy Seal (phoque in French).

I have a sense we have a clear majority against deSmith on this board.

There is about 20% opposed because he is not Québecois, so even though Casey has average .912 SVP over 5 seasons, they think his $1.8M contract is too rich, whle at the same time they clamour to give Montembeault a fast extension of around $3M per year after his one and only season of .901( career .896).

There are another 20% who think he is too old, even though he is younger and healthier than Jake Allen whom they want to keep because the GM signed his extension and the GM can do no wrong.

There are still about 5% who mistakenly believe that unless we move deSmith, we won't be able to get cap compliant on deadline day and then put Carey Price on IN-SEASON LTIR. Flat out wrong, but a few are still too lazy to check into it.

Then there is about 30% who don't want deSmith around because they worry he is the best of our 4 goalies, and they want us to lose the most games possible.

What an unholy alliance.
