Avs will wait it out and claim one of DeSmith / Primeau off waivers

I don't think we are asking much for DeSmith. So a 7th rounder vs using a waiver claim is not a huge difference. Is Hughes asking for a 3rd-5th round pick? Possible.

With Primeau, I doubt the Avs claim him thinking he will be their cup contender back-up solution. However, a rebuilding team could very well claim him.

I expect this to resolve itself but the Habs prefer to unload DeSmith prior to the cap crunch before the season starts (Price not on LTIR). Hughes is playing the right strategy... he's going to let preseason games play out and there is surely going to be some goalie injuries. That's plan A. Plan B is DeSmith is offloaded in Oct/Nov. Hughes knew this before making that trade with the Pens.

Avs simply need a bridge solution till their G is recovered & healthy which likely is anywhere from 4-8 weeks, not a permanent replacement

Unless of course the diagnosis is he will miss majority / entire season..

Depends on how they see the difference between DeSmith vs Francouz as the back-up. Problem would be when Francouz comes back and if they want to have that much goalie depth and also chewing into cap space a bit.

I'm personally not worried about it. We are board and our only trade idea is DeSmith because we prefer to have cap flexibility with Price on LTIR after the season starts.

Would they claim Primeau for a short term solution as back-up? Possible I guess. Loosing Primeau at this stage is meh... He's not going to end up better than Allen or Monty IMO.

Any chance we'd be interested in Pinto if Ottawa can't sign him? We're one of the rare teams who has cap space...
every team would be interested in a young 6'2 right shot center with a lot of upside, problem is we already have a ton of forwards (as well as prospects coming up), if a trade were to happen it would have to be a pretty big one with several pieces

Normally the deadline is a Wednesday?

Friday makes it better for people to watch the shows they put on. Take the day off, or leave at lunch to watch it.

I hope we'd be interested if he becomes available, but i doubt he will.
If Dorion has to trade Pinto because he signed Tarasenko for one year, he should be fired on the spot.
He has to know that he'll be able to free cap space for sure. The name of Batherson comes to mind.

There are also rumours that he's trying to move Mathieu Joseph to create cap space.
Even if he does, i'm not sure he'll have enough cap space for 13 forwards on the team.

No chance Sens trade Pinto, they’re likely looking to clear cap space to sign Pinto
They are and it's probably Joseph.

Joseph adds speed, some size at 6'1, local kid, might be a lesser Lehkonen with his forecheck.

Ticks so many boxes AND the Habs could get another pick and/or prospect for taking him.

Seems like a win-win to me. Send Wideman back after he's waived

I think your spinning it a bit. Skilled players need to be allowed to be creative in order to do what they do best and MSL is allowing them too but also asking them to be defensively aware. Like if you are the last man back kind of thing. It's a little deep in context and I only captured a fraction of it.

Let me play the spin game. There is no way MSL is going to coach like Therrien and Julien... which is what you are trying to say. ;)
This tactic also increases their trade value. Matheson could net us a solid return if/when we trade him.

Harris, Ylonen, Tuch, Mesar, picks etc. Habs have a wealth of assets if they wanted to make this deal. I’d be very interested.
i think it's Harris +Kidney + Mesar + Ylonen at minimum for Pinto + w/e they think balances the trade, Pinto is a stud

i'd still do it  (and i rly like Harris)

Hard deal to make. What we going to give up?
Value would be somewhere between Newhook and Dach right? There would definitely be a depth forward going the other way (Ylonen?), a prospect (Farrell?), and Calgary's pick. Now, if we were to take on Joseph, it might affect the outlook on the trade.

I'd say it's very unlikely as well, and some other team in need of a center would probably put together a more enticing offer than us. I'm pretty sure KH is doing his due diligence on that though, as he should.

Would you make that deal?

IMHO - top-2C 70-75 pts capability maybe 80, but I’m concerned if he’s injury prone
I don't think I'd go that far but I see him as a better Dvo whose bigger and has a better shot and has the potential to be better defensively. I would prefer gambling on Pinto to Newhook for example. He put up 20 goals last year but 6 were in the first few weeks. He scored at a 15 goal pace for the rest of the season. I'd be fine giving up a few decent assets and flipping Dvo (Or Anderson) somewhere else.

I don't think the Sens would consider dealing him to us however.

According to a recent column published by Pierre LeBrun on the site The Athletic , the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens is currently working on a big transaction aimed at freeing up money under the payroll by exchanging the contract of Carey Price to a new team.

I don't see anything like that on The Athletic. All he mentions is that the habs will likely trade Price's contract this season. But I don't see anything about immenent or working on something big.

Unless its something I am missing.

Here:

"how determined management seems to be in protecting cap space, especially starting with next summer. Which makes you wonder if they’re saving up for something big. "

That's it that's all.

It's hard to see another team paying a lot of anything for Price. Since the last lockout the cap floor has become a joke, it's a non issue for most teams. And Price has I think ... 4 more seasons? That's a lot.

Right now Price's contract is not a nuisance to the Habs. But maybe Hughes is planning on Gallagher LTIRing in a year or two, at which point it would become an issue.
