I'd be shocked at Washington trading Wilson, but I'd take him in a heartbeat. This team needs some nastiness. Also, he only has one year left on his contract. He's an easy flip at TDL.

Mantha I won't no part of. We have too many forwards as it is, and he doesn't have a pulse. Hoffman sucks & I really want him gone, but even he gets into it with hacks & slashes. You need to have guys with at least some competitive spirit.
I'd be all over Tom Wilson if only to teach Slafkovsky how to play with bite.

Imagine it won't be a 'free' pick-up... plenty of teams would be after Wilson. But Imagine we get PLD somehow and Wilson...

Dvorak+ for Wilson wouldn't hurt the Caps, they do need a Lars Eller replacement.

Such a franchise player that after his third year in Nashville, they gave him away for peanuts.

They upgraded to Weber and the team immediately turned around. Subban is one of the most overrated Habs to have ever worn the jersey, this not to say that he wasn't good because he was but he was alot more flash than he was effective.

The highest scoring season in the last 30 years but it's business as usual in Habsland.

To be fair, had our powerplay been producing anywhere close to league average, Suzuki alone would probably have 15-ish more points, easy.

Immediately turned it around?

They made the POs once under normal season conditions. Then were frequently bottom 3rd in the league in terms of quality.

The two COVID seasons provided them with the conditions to qualify for the playoffs, but those post-Subban teams were just as bad as Subban's final year with the habs,

Have people already forgotten that Subban was literally a Norris finalist his second year in Nashville?

They "turned" things around in 2016-2017 largely because Price played 62 games in 2016-2017 and only played 12 games in 2015-2016 (and because they added Radulov). The fact that they didn't finish worse with Mike Condon as their starter is frankly insane. Montreal won their first 9 games and Price only lost one game where he wasn't injured/re-injured.

do we still have one of Calglary's first round picks from the TT deal?

No. The Toffoli trade brought Heineman and a 2022 1st that Habs took Mesar with. And they also go Tyler Pitlick in that deal. They also have a 5th round pick this year left from the Toffoli trade. But there is no more 1st round picks left from the TT deal.

Yes with infinite conditions. Basically we have the Flames 2025 1st rounder.

The infinite conditions 1st is the one Habs got for taking Monahan off Flames' hands, not the Toffoli deal.

No, the one that they have now from Calgary is from the Monahan deal. There’s a 117 conditions on it but they could take Calgary’s pick next year if Calgary finishes between 20-32, or they could roll the dice on them being worse in 2025 and take that one. But there’s so many conditions that were put in that there’s a dozen scenarios that could possibly play out.

My mistake.

Still, a great move. Might have taken Monahan and got the 2025 2nd overall pick or 2026 1st overall pick. Flames could be pretty bad in 2-3 years.

It was a great move. Both trades Hughes made with Treliving were great moves. And Flames made a good deal by acquiring Toffoli, who has been one of their best players since the trade.

Nashville immediately improved when they swapped Weber for Subban.

What a strange memory you have

Yes with infinite conditions. Basically we have the Flames 2025 1st rounder.

Or, Florida's 2025 1st. No guarantee at all, it's Calgary's pick. Calgary would have to trade Florida's 2025 pick for Montreal to automatically get Calgary's pick at top 1 protected.

It could be Calgary finishes bottom 5 in 2025, but Florida top 5, and we get the Panthers pick. It's really similar to the Dvorak trade with Arizona.

If Mantha doesn’t have a pulse and is injury prone, what can the Caps realistically hope for in a trade? He’s been particularly putrid since WAS acquired him.

Not much. And, they'd have to retain.

I'd do Armia for Mantha, with 20% retained (about $1.15m), and Boston's 2024 3rd round pick.

That still leaves us with a higher cap it, $4.55m, but we're compensated with one less contract year & a pick.

Also, Washington has next to no right shot forwards.

wow lots of mechanics here. so we get either Florida's or Calgary's pick? the draft after this year is going to be a wicked one to tank for as well, some real gems there to look forward to.

Yes, Calgary got Florida's 1st round pick in 2025 from Tkachuk trade. It is only lottery protected (not top 10), so that pick would have to win #1 or #2 overall for Calgary not to get it.

Likelihood is extremely high Florida is not a lottery team in 2025. Not with Tkachuk & Barkov in their prime, so Calgary will get their pick.

If they do get that pick then essentially it's exactly like the Dvorak trade.

There are so many conditions because Hughes built in what ifs for if Calgary doesn't get that pick or if Calgary trades that pick.

Food for thought since Monahan was brought up:

Is there a case to say that the Monahan deal cost us a bottom 4 spot in this year's draft (pre-lottery)?

Monahan had points in 6 games that ended up a W by one goal.
More importantly, he provided depth beyond a single line, like we've had since Christmas. 17 points in 25 games.
Removing all 12 points (unrealistic) puts us in a 3-way tie for last.

If we're looking at it from this point of view, a likely pick 10-20 OA in 2025 doesn't excite me much - quite a frustrating outcome provided we didn't get assets at the TDL. I'm saying pick 10-20 because the only way we get a top 10 pick with all these conditions, is if both CGY and FLA are in the bottom 10.

We may look back in a few years with a starless roster thinking this is where we missed out on a franchise forward. So on brand with this franchise's luck. This just feels like we won the trade but we aren't improving, like in the Bergevin era.

Of course if we win a lottery all will be forgotten and forgiven.
We could even call it Kwisatz Haderach level planning.

Yeah, most on here including myself though Monahan was done. He wasn't, and it hurt us big time in the first quarter of the season when we were a .500 team.

We haven't had good luck at all. One lottery win could change all that.
