An hostile offer sheet for 6.3m for Dubois kind of makes sense it would cost a 2024 first and 3rd i believe and no way the jets match if they do they can't trade him for a year so they would lose him for nothing its an interesting venue.
Zero chance Dubois signs for $6.3M lol

Even if PLD signs that, that pick is Montreal's and you can't protect it, so that makes no sense for the Habs to do.

The only benefit I see to getting him earlier and paying a premium to do it, is if they can structure a "9" year deal, where he signs a 1 year contract at a really high salary and then a 8 year contract extension at a lower average salary then he would have gotten if he waited until 2024. The cap savings for the next eight years are worth paying some sort of a premium to get him.
This is an amazing, forward thinking approach to gaining extra Cap flexibility to build a true contender or to, should we be lucky, keep a draft pick that becomes ultra elite beyond our expectations down the line.

Maximum for year would be 20% of 82.5M, likely, next year, so, 16.5M! That's 8M over an 8.5M AAV on an 8-year deal. Can that land us Dubois on an 8-year, front-loaded, bonus-laden contract around 7M?

That would really be amazing, but I think we'd have to shed some Cap to accommodate the 16.5M contract next year, along with Caufield's long term extension, hopefully also around 7.5M.

Just compare MON's situation with three of its top players at a total of 22.86M VS Toronto's top three players at 33.54M. That's 10.69M left over for more skilled depth, on top of a Cap hit that should be jumping up in a couple of years!

Honestly, considering the ages of most UFAs, I'm not sure he's wrong (although Severson has a strong argument). Its a good off-season to be a rebuilding team cleaning up their cap.

It also kind of shows why Josh Anderson probably has good trade value.

That UFA group is putrid. Trade is the only way we improve this team for next year. In all honesty it may be best to resign Monahan assuming he is still alive.

Don’t expect him to sign some FA except maybe some depth player. We already have close to a full roaster next year
Hughes needs to help his specialty teams. Both been abysmal this season. if he fixed them be huge jump in Montreal performance on the ice. Hughes shown before good judge of talent before. He has caproom now to address this need

MSL was taking about that and how they rarely practice them due to players missing and constant turn around of players in and out of the lineup. Hope they can focus on it more next year because they have been atrocious

Hughes stated he wouldn't sign a late 20s player to a long-term contract.

You're likely looking at an off-season where he(Hughes) just makes a trade, or two and brings in another bad contract, or two.

Team is going to suck next year, so why pay to trade away Hoffman, or Armia, or someone when you can just hang on another year, suck and get rid if Hoffman as a ufa, or Armia will cost less to trade away. Might even be able to trade him and a 3rd, for a similar contract with 1 year less.

Vancouver needs RHD. Severson is a ufa. Habs could be looking at taking on OEL for their 1st and maybe send a lesser contract back like Armia. That type of deal might get complicated, but thar might be how the Habs get another 1st for this draft.

He's got 4 years left after this season, so that retention will be costly and that might hurt the Habs when they're ready to compete with 1, or 2 years left on his contract

You want to be stuck with OEL's $7,260,000m contract for the next 4 years. WHY??????

Habs have enough multi-years deadweight contracts as is, they don't need more.

For the assets that come with it and that's if Vancouver even feels it's worth it to pay that much to rid themselves of it.

We actually don't need to sign any FAs.. we need to move bodies out more than anything.

Agreed, unless they're after Samsonov...

moves will be done via trade, Kent has to try and find a way to trade Armia and Allen IMO.
Hoffman and Edmundson I can live with in the final year of contracts. Gallagher unfortunately there won't be takers. You can also try Price to Arizona but it would probably cost us a 1st to go with it.

Hoffman can stay since he has a year left and I think can be moved next deadline. Armia is one of the 2-3 players Kent needs to try and get rid of. There is just no space for him with younger players being able to do his job like RHP, Ylonen...

By the summer 2025, all of our bad contracts except Gallagher are going to be off the books. I think Hughes will try to compete by then. I don't want to add OEL contract.

Depends on the cost. Might just have to ride it out with Armia for another season and see what the cost is then. Possibly a team has some interest and the Habs retain 50% for 2 years.

Me neither, but if the incentive to take him is good, might change the outlook
