Cosentino at Sportsnet just released his March rankings yesterday.

"10. David Reinbacher, D, Kloten (SUI): It’s not often a player so young is so heavily relied on by a senior men’s team in a top-notched pro league. "

I'll take some Reinbacher with Flordia's pick all day.
In a top-notch pro league… that is the part we’re I have questions. I have no issue with FLA pick but let someone else take that risk earlier…

I wouldn't give him close to 10 mil either, but he's 24, been angling for free agency since he asked out of Columbus, and having a career year (driven mostly by PP production and being one of the few Jets forwards that plays defence, but still) He's not going to settle for an 8 mil AAV when his comparables have been getting more than that for a couple of years now. Plus the cap is also projected to start rising again soon.
I’m looking elsewhere at that price. We aren’t winning cups or becoming contenders paying players like Dubois that much money regardless of the cap increase. We’ll see how much he really wants to be apart of the Habs.

I personally don't mind if Montreal doesn't (potentially trade for) and sign Dubois, but I think Montreal's rebuild is going to take a few years.

Out of curiosity, who would you be looking for at the 8 mil and below AAV?

The Jets have zero leverage over us in any potential Dubois trade right now. He’s RFA so we can talk to again in the summer and get a better idea of just how much he wants to come to Montreal. We aren’t competing next year anyways so if we feel it’s a necessity to get him here before he hits UFA, we can pay just pay rental price which will be cheaper then giving up Floridas pick and whatever else they’ll try to poach from us. The only thing that could potentially throw things off is if another team enters the picture with the intention of a sign and trade.
We might get a deal on Dubois. Like Rangers did in Kane. Then again Chicago may have done that because it was Kane

We have the cap space next season to do the KK thing. It would be a terrific hit imo if management could pull this off.

1yr 6M so NYR is screwed and we pay a 1st and a 3rd

Then 8 years 5M AAV. Doubt Lafreniere would accept tho.
HuGo are not going to burn any bridges including their own by going the offer sheet route which is looked upon as an act of treason in this league. It's long be known that there is an unwritten agreement amongst the ownership group that this is a faux pas. Molson ignored that and got his fingers burnt by the mighty Carolina Hurricanes.

He got burned because his GM's assessment was completely wrong , the OS was laughable, and then Dundon wanted to send a message to not F with his team.

He got burned because he signed off on STUPIDITY that no one else in the league would attempt.

I don't think anyone is advocating for him, well maybe a small minority, over the big 4 or the top 6.. but if your options are Reinbacher, Yager, Dvorsky, Barlow, Leonard, Moore.. they all have risks.

$8M - $9M range to fall in line with contracts recently handed out (Hintz, Horvat, Larkin). And we can offer lots of signing bonus structure. Neither Larkin or Horvat got any signing bonus money but the Habs can do this.

I heard recently that even in our tank year with lots of injuries, Habs have the highest average attendance. Montreal is a money maker big time and signing bonus money (more than 50% of the contract) is something we can offer where other teams avoid it. This is substantial extra investment time for Dubois
Dubois is not worth more than Nick Suzuki and if he wants more he can go elsewhere. I wonder how many points Suzuki would have playing with the linemates PLD gets and has had on a regular basis? Suzuki has been saddled with scrubs for much of his tenure here. A frickin revolving door of Drouin Hoffman Anderson Pitlick RHP Ylonen etc. Aside from Caufield and Toffoli he's been blessed with a complete lack of reliable talented wingers.

Molson should have just put himself in Dundons position and ask himself if he'd let Bergevin take his star player for $8.5M per , and he would have put his pen away. But he just played along.

Does anyone think this Bally Sports Fiasco is going to mess with the Cap long term. It's not pretty.

Got any insight into Reinbacher's weaknesses? I've been looking into him and am struggling to see what he lacks vs. someone like Jiricek. (Maybe not as good offensively, but slightly higher hockey IQ it/better skater it seems).

This quote from KH in today's Sportsnet article makes me think we're trading the FLA pick.

"I do envision there’s a time coming soon where a pick that we’ve acquired becomes a trade asset instead of a future player."

They already did that last draft with the Romanov+ -> 13th oa+ -> Dach trade chain.

He might have just misspoke, but the fact he details that it's a pick they've acquired and not just one of their picks points me to the FLA pick.

I think it is more likely than not that we trade the pick (assuming it's not top 10). I could see us trading away some prospects/young players on top of the pick, we are overcrowded.

Maybe to get rid of some bad contracts?

If I was Gorton or Hughes and I knew that he would wait for one more year and also be willing to take similar contracts to Horvat, Hintz, or Larkin, I would wait and let the Jets drown with him for one more year.

The part I wonder about is he cap for 24/25 and what changes from now till then? Does Brisson push for $9M - $10M when they know the cap is $88M+ for 24/25? Contracts could change and I do think agents are going to make GM's take fits when the official cap for 24/25 is known.

I even spoken to a larger cap than $83.5M for next year with a higher escrow and some fans laughed at me. Well, Bettman just said that exact same thing this week.
Fans laugh at Bettman all the time ;)

Sooner or later you need to leverage your depth for quality, we are getting close to that stage
