Allen is the closest thing we got to a starter goalie. We don't NEED a starter for 2023 but we do need a half decent goalie (like Allen).

Primeau and Montembault are not the answer for 2023 in my opinion. Not even close - that would be the worst goaltending duo in the league especially behind our D corpse. I'm not high on Primeau at all.

We do not have to keep Allen, but we do need to replace him with SOMEBODY other than the two 3rd string goalies we currently have.

That's the only thing I'm considering before I'm moving Allen. We'd have to acquire somebody via trade most likely - a good quality backup like Allen. If Hugo doesn't think they can bring in another good quality backup like Allen at the very least, then I don't think they trade him (unless they're offered a 1st).

And if they keep him past TDL, I also see them resigning him in the summer time.
I don't believe they are even entertaining the possibility of parting ways with Allen right now. If they do, the return needs to be huge. Monty cannot goal 82 games all year and 23 year old Primeau has not even re-signed. My feeling is that at next year's draft, they will stock up on goaltenders and unload Allen at the deadline. Monty will play for the remaining games and they will target some UFA goalie for cheap. They will likely rush goalie prospects and test their capabilities, until they find the next Roy. They might even extend Allen for another ywar or two because that's actuallybthe best option right now.

Resigning Allen is definitely the best option assuming we cannot find a replacement. People here seem to think we will only get a 2nd for Allen - that is not worth shitting the bed in net with Primeau/Montembault for the following year.

As for 2023 UFAs, there are only a few guys that I wouldn't mind seeing as stop gaps until we find our true starter. Adan Hill, Tristan Jarry and Blackwood are the only three guys I'd be interested in...and that's assuming they don't resign with their current clubs.

Goalie market just sucks so bad right now lol. Not a lot of options in UFA and like you said we don't have any upcoming studs in our pipeline either.

It is because the goalie market sucks that Allen should be moved if someone is willing to overpay.

Regardless of Price, Allen should get traded to manage asset, Allen isn’t part of our future, winning more game this year with Allen is irrelevant..

totally agree... and... with where they are at with the roster right now, I would not be surprised in the least if HuGo wants to keep Allen in place unless they are confident Price is capable of playing 40-50 games. If not, I doubt they'd want to see Monty and ? carrying the load all season, ramping up the pressure on the rookie head coach and young defense group.

More likely is that they roll with Allen/Monty/Price until mid-season or closer to the deadline, then look to flip Allen once we are clearly out of playoff consideration to a contender with the need.

Risk is Allen gets hurt, but even if he does, he's not a bad candidate to bring back on a 2-year deal in the offseason and might be inclined to stick around if he likes the org./dressing room...

Reward is giving the young group decent/solid goaltending so that the losses aren't as demoralizing AND cashing in on a deadline premium (there are always at least 1-2 teams in need of a solid G addition, and Allen might well end up one of the better G available at the deadline in some time.

Fleury netted a conditional first last year while posting a .908 sv %, Allen is a good bet to be hovering around that if he's healthy this year (and the team in front of him isn't the dumpster fire it was under DD).

Unless a team comes knocking with a guaranteed 1st on the table right now, much better to keep allen and see how things shake out.

At the moment, the negotiations between Oettinger and the Stars are not going well. He's an RFA. They'll make it work eventually. But at this moment, they're at a stand still.

According to CapFriendly, Stars have $10.3M in cap space and they have Oettinger and Jason Robertson to sign.
Go all in on Oettinger then !

FWIW, Marco D’Amico claims that Allen’s name is being discussed:

“Montreal Hockey Now learned that Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jake Allen’s name has started to pop up again in trade discussions across the league, and despite the uncertainty in net, there is some sense in making such a trade before training camp.”

A couple of caveats — we don’t know if the Habs are initiating any of those purported discussions and we don’t know how D’Amico has learned this and how reliable his source might be.

I think it makes sense to move Allen now if a team meets the assumed high price Hughes wants for him. They could then replace Allen by using their 1st overall waiver wire priority until November 1st on a goalie from a bursting at the seams talented team that has no room for an otherwise desirable asset that it is forced to waive.

You're implying we should trade him because he will have no use for us moving forward yeah?
Over simplifying it. He has more value being traded at the deadline than to resign as a future backup.

Habs will need a no. 1 and Allan is more expensive than Monty or Primeau and Primeau will be given a shot as a full time NHLer after next season.

Allan’s usefulness was a backup plan to Price for the playoffs but that’s not the case anymore.

Play him all season, hopefully he boosts his value and we can move him to a contender at the TDL for assets.

I gotchu. I just think it depends on what the return is. Anything less than a 1st and/or enticing player/prospect is not interesting enough for me to trade him. I think he has more value for the Habs as a good backup who can give them some stability in net during this transition/rebuild, than a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

This is assuming they decide to re-sign him in UFA. If they plan to move on then i agree trade him for whatever you can get at TDL.

I wonder what his trade value would be for his signing rights. I really want him lmao. Would be our best shot at a top quality starter not named Sheshertkin or Vasilevskiy.

Would we do a 2024 1st + mid level prospect like ylonen? Is that even enough?

Devil fans are going crazy if they think Slav and Khule is worth Lukes Hughes
:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Luke Hughes is looking dominant on the ice in the NCAA both defensively and offensively. He is also great at the U20.

I think he is worth more than both of them separately but together it is a very steep price. But in any case you don't trade a 1OA you just drafted !

Part of it at least. Expiring contract and no playoffs will make him very tradable at the deadline.
Allen is solid NHL goalie on cheap contract. He's worth a second all day long. He has good name in dressing room playoffs.

Only way I trade Allen now is if Vegas takes semi bad contract back. Not big one like Price or Gallagher. But a Hoffman or Armia type. Then use the caproom to pick up another asset. Many teams are rumoured to be looking to move cap. Like Islanders to sign Kadri.

Until Price's situation becomes more clear, I doubt Allan is going anywhere unless it's a ridiculous offer. I doubt Vegas has the appetite for that kind of offer as they just got absolutely fleeced on the Patches trades.

I'd expect he gets moved closer to the deadline when the season is over and he's added more to his value.

I agree that a 1st is way overpayment for a backup. Habs would be lucky to get a 2nd and B prospect for him but we'll see what the goaltending market looks like after this year's music chairs.

Having a solid goalie is important, even for a team like MTL that will likely finish near the bottom of the league this year. IMO much of sports are mental and it will help with confidence and team development through the year if they don't have to worry about the goalie losing games constantly, Monty doesnt have that confidence in him. Losing is one thing, being in competitive games and coming up short is another.

Allen has stuck around in the league this long because he has the foundational skills to stay relevant and he'll continue to do so. Some teams will value him as a really nice backup option down the stretch.

If a team like Vegas (or other) steps up and offers more than he's really worth you take it, but I think Allen's value to MTL is still pretty big. Come TDL if it seems he won't want to stay with MTL past this year we can look to move him.

And who do you think you're hurting? Take one 1st. That means you have a crack at a top pick and without a competent starter, it means the Habs increase their chances at Bedard.

I'd consider a 1st but I'm not playing nice with the max offer. 1st is the starting point, not the max point. This is about supply and demand in a flat cap where Allen's contract is a value contract for one year. Habs should not give up this up easily.

A 2nd rounder and B prospect is not worth it for us. Better to trade him at the deadline if that's the best offer we are getting before the season starts. Start with a 1st and then we can engage. If teams don't want to offer it, call someone else

I'm not managing moves for a better chance at Bedard. That to me happens in Dec/Jan after we get to see what they do first. And I bet you Hughes and Gorton are thinking the same. So the Bedard draft don't factor in the Allen trade at this point in time.
