Allen is 32. He's unlikely to be effective as a number 2 by the time we are on the winning side again. Primeau will be 24 in 2023-2024. He should be in the NHL as a number 2 no later than 2023-2024. And if we want our young players to win we should get a real number 1 soon to replace Price if he can't play anymore.

Allen is not a real number 1 despite what some here think of him. He should be traded at the deadline if he got any significant value. In fact every players who are over 26 and UFA next season should be traded at the deadline. No reason to keep any of them as there's no hard to replace players in the lot.
Goalies typically don’t have a ton of value. I don’t see Allen having a ton of trade value. If some team is willing to overpay massively, of course we move him. But I think for a rebuilding team, it’s not healthy for the lockerroom to have chaos in the net like we had when Montembault/Primeau as a tandem when Price/Allen were hurt.

Now there are two guys who say/write a whole lot without actually saying anything at all.
Seems these days, that all the insiders, are pretty much the same...............pure speculation most times.
Lebrun and Dreger are amazing at talking over and over, and never saying anything at all.

so quiet these days... everyone is on the beach

August is usually the dead time of the year. Things start to get more active again end of August/early September.

Luckily, we have the WJC to give us a fix at the moment. And with a few Habs prospects there, we have more of an interest. So it holds us off a little.

Kadri is out there.... NYI waiting for a drum roll or what?

Lou's doing it the Lou way. His M.O. is he signs players, but they're announced all at once.

The rumor now is Dobson, Romanov, and possibly Bellows are all signed, but not announced. They will surely all be announced at the same time in September before camp.

I remember last year at the end of August or start of September, it was reported that Isles signed Parise. The Isles made the official announcement on October 10th (a month and a half later).

Then they may prefer a solid backup who can fill in as a starter if Thompson falters. Take a 2nd for Allen and try to use it at the trade deadline. A 2nd and an expiring contract (Dadonov) for a contenders 1st.
I see your point, but extra seconds are also extremely valuable.

If you’re logic for them finishing bottom 5 depends on 5 “ifs” and some bad luck, then it’s probably bad logic…
It's not logic -- it's a wish list, which is fine, but far from certain.

Agree with this. The only players 26 and older the Habs could move now for a reasonable return is Anderson, Dvorak, Allen, and Edmundson. And I think 3 of those players are moved by the 2024 trade deadline at the latest.

Contracts like Armia, Hoffman, Drouin, Gallagher, Byron are going to be tough to move without adding a sweetener and potentially retaining.

The Habs are building around a core of players that seem to fit a certain timeline, being good in 4-5 years.
Retaining on contracts ending in the current year is a no-brainer, as it will be for both Drouin and Dadonov, if only to get a higher return. Byron? To get something, maybe, given his injury history. Retaining for Allen won't be necessary and a smaller return than if we had held back some salary will be offset by the Cap space gained.

I have no problem trading Allen – or any player – provided we get a good return. For me, a 2nd round pick (likely late round) isn't worth losing a solid backup who can step in as a starter. If a team like Vegas is willing to overpay... go for it. If it's simply to dump cap hits... not worth it. Edmonton, Toronto, Vegas, Ottawa are good teams in need of someone like Allen. His level of goaltending isn't spectacular, but it's harder to find than we think.

If Primeau or Dobes looks good, Allen becomes expendable. If a team overpays, he becomes expendable. But unless one of those things happen, we have a 32 year old proven NHL goalie who can be leaned on for another few years while our newly-rebuilt team takes its first steps.
He'd need to be re-signed if he is to be leaned on for another few years and 3M for Allen is too much, IMO, going forward.

The cap is expected to increase by about $2M for 2023/24, and should jump significantly shortly thereafter. Signing Allen to a 3-year deal at $3M per would be a good deal, IMO. Unless injuries become chronic, he could remain effective for another 4/5 years.

Ideally, one of our goalie prospects develops into a legit starter. He'll be on an ELC until Allen's contract is done. That's a good tandem for cheap – an upcoming young goalie being mentored by a very good backup who can fill in as a starter.

Who knows – maybe HuGo will trade for John Gibson. But, realistically, it's hard to find reliable NHL goalies. Hopeful playoff teams and contenders are struggling to find bandaid goalies as good as Allen, and most are paid even more. How likely are we to find a more solid goalie for less?

I wonder if CHI would be interested in Dvorak - their centre depth (Especially if Toews gets moved) is not great. They need to at least put a team on the ice....

I saw Dubois at the Rogers Cup yesterday, he probably wants to become a tennis player now :sarcasm:

Is anyone surprised by this?

Of course, it doesn’t take anything away from the usual, expected value from non first rounders to fill other needs in a lineup.

Also, one could argue about where the cutoffs were in defining a “star” but the gyst of the argument remains — Habs trading for a 3rd 1st rounder in 2023 remains the jugular.

Could the Dallas Stars or Arizona Coyotes be targeting Montreal Canadiens goalie Jake Allen on the NHL trade market?
I would ask for Bourque from Dallas

What's the deal with Dallas? Did I miss something? Isn't Oettinger their next long-term starter? Why would they need Allen?

At the moment, the negotiations between Oettinger and the Stars are not going well. He's an RFA. They'll make it work eventually. But at this moment, they're at a stand still.

According to CapFriendly, Stars have $10.3M in cap space and they have Oettinger and Jason Robertson to sign.

Don't know when or for who but I know these players will not be on this team past TDL:
Dadonov
Drouin
Allan
Byron

Possibly also gone but not as time sensitive:
Dvorak
Hoffman

Price - LTIR or retirement within next 2 years.

We should still be able to get some pretty good picks and prospects back for 2023 and then I'd say Habs will be ready to really start moving forward and try to become more competitive, once the deadweight is gone, cap is available and kids start taking more prominent roles.
