No chance we're getting a 1st for Allen right now. We could either move him (2nd/3rd I think) or keep him and see if his value rises.

There are numerous contenders this year, one will be in desperation mode come TDL if their goalie goes down.

They knew Lehner is hurt since the end of last season, doubt the are in desperation mode now.
They dont seem the sharpest bunch, so i would not assume that.
They got handed the luckiest break in nhl history and took them 2 years to destroy it from the top down lol

No one is going to blow away anything to get Allen. He’s a serviceable no. 2 who very good in that role. But as Hughes even said, he’s not a no. 1.

lol make it even worse, Vegas got fleeced for Patches. Think they’re giving a 1st for Allen? Lol.
I don’t know. Allen at 50% and a prospect like Ylonen might get us a 1st.

Why trade Allen without knowing whats going to happen with Price? And even then, if Price is able to play, he could go down any time... What's the rush? Do we really need another 2nd-3rd rd pick? There are other options to address the cap situation.

I was replying to the part of the post that said no GM in their right mind would trade a 2023 1st for Allen. While this is true there are a few GM's that may not be in their right mind. It is still highly unlikely they would trade a 1st for him but it is possible that at the trade deadline someone might get desperate and move a 1st for Allen++. Likely a 2024 1st though. Vegas won't be desperate for a goalie unless Thompson drops the ball.

Yes. Need more 2023 1sts and 2nds. I would take a 2nd now and save the cap space. Habs are going nowhere this year. They could reacquire the Hamburgler to (semi)fill the crease.

C'mon now, having address in both places for nearly 13 years and doing some frequent back and forth, there's no significant difference between Montreal and Ottawa winters...
Yes, there is. In Montreal, the winters are officially French. In Ottawa officially bilingual. That means you get frozen out by two languages instead of one.

Won’t they have to waive Monty if Price is ready to start the season or are they going to keep 3 goalies on the roster to avoid exposing Monty?

Allen is a fringe starter. He's better than he gets credit for from Fans. One of the best value goalie contracts in the NHL today. He's just as good as Campbell and the Oilers just signed him with term and a much higher contract than Allen.

If the Knights call, the price is two 1st or equivalent. Doubt they do it but that's our price. Don't like it? Call someone else.
And who do you think you're hurting? Take one 1st. That means you have a crack at a top pick and without a competent starter, it means the Habs increase their chances at Bedard.

If we're gonna tank let's do it excellently. No half measures.

Waiving Monty is certainly an option but then, if Price goes down in November (or whenever), we will need another back up to Allen. Back to square one... We are stuck with the Price situation... Not much we can do until we know whats up with him

Given how much teams scrambled for goalies last year, I’m guessing Monty will get claimed if waived. Maybe they should just go with 3 goalies and see how Price holds up.

What are the other options to dump cap?

Jake Allen is the obvious bait given Vegas' situation. If you could trade Allen for Broissot ($450K retained) it opens up the million dollars the Habs could use to comfortably start the season and still have a low-level backup in the fold.

With not just sign Holtby?

People need to come back to earth. Allen is not a good goalie. I repeat Jake Allen is not a good goalie.

/edit

Just saw Holtby can't play still there's better option than Allen i'm sure.
I disagree, he's a solid goalie who can definitely be a short term #1 . Any goalie would have struggled in Montreal last year

If I were Vegas I'd do Allen + Mailloux for my 1st. It depends on what management thinks of Logan... if I were Vegas I'd try to capitalize on it.
I ll pass , mailloux would have been a top 10 pick if not for what happened. Be patient . Ya I d definitely be all over that if I were Vegas

Habs management has not once mentioned the word "rebuild". It seems to me that this is more of a "retool". Where the team is moving out players who they don't see as a long term fit. While looking to add players who they feel would be. Also it's been noted several times that Petry requested a trade due to family issues involving Covid. It had nothing to do with the direction of the team.
It's a rebuild... They just aren't saying it because this is Montreal afterall

Ok sorry I thought you would want to trade him now, at the deadline or even in some months it might be a different situation with injuries and some of the new hired goalies maybe disappointing.

Could the Dallas Stars or Arizona Coyotes be targeting Montreal Canadiens goalie Jake Allen on the NHL trade market?

Could the Dallas Stars or Arizona Coyotes be targeting Montreal Canadiens goalie Jake Allen on the NHL trade market?

An NHL source told Montreal Hockey Now that both teams have inquired about acquiring the Canadiens goalie on the NHL trade market before and opined that it could make a ton of sense for both the Coyotes and the Stars to do so once Carey Price’s situation becomes clearer.

“Hearing Jake Allen More. Stars Or Coyotes Make Sense. Both teams have looked into him in the past, I know that,” the source told MHN late Wednesday afternoon. “Depending on what happens with Price, it could make a lot of sense for them and the Canadiens. Let’s say Carey’s good to go or close to by the time the season starts. Then, what if [Jake] Oettinger hasn’t been signed by then or he’s holding out during camp, are you taking the chance on Scott Wedgewood and a call-up as your goalies to start the season if you think you’re a contender this year?”

Obviously, the Coyotes have no aspirations to be a playoff contender this coming season but right now, they only have 26-year-old goalie Karel Vejmelka on their roster.

“The Yotes need another goalie and honestly they want to be as competitive as they can to create and keep buzz around them,” the source pointed out.

The Coyotes also have tons of cap space as they’re currently $20.3 million under the $82.5 million salary cap for the 2022-23 NHL regular season. According to this same source, the Coyotes have been very active in NHL trade talks this offseason. The obvious reason is defenceman Jakob Chychrun but they’re looking to acquire ‘quality players’ not just salary, picks and prospects.

As for the Stars, they have $10.3 million in cap space and even if they sign Oettinger, they could afford to acquire Jake Allen and the final season of his two-year contract that carries a $2.8 million cap hit.
Another speculative spaghetti against the wall piece by none other than Charlie Murphy.

Don’t think any of what he’s speculated upon has ever come to pass but it doesn’t stop him from churning them out.

His alleged info this time comes from “one NHL source”, a variation from his usual “one western GM”.

His real source? “Trust me bro.”
