Hughes would be smart to have the extension in place prior to the trade (whatever that trade looks like, I trust Hughes). However, I would not make the trade without any extension.

All the Habs need to do is sit back and let it play out. Jets trade him to another team? What GM is going to do what the Jets did and wish he extends with them after the trade? Dubois is not going to bypass the Habs at this point in time and sign an extension with another team. His head is in Montreal clearly with the information we have come to learn
Yes that is what I meant. There is no way a trade would be made unless a contract had already been agreed on. But Hughes won't lowball Dubois. He won't give him a max contract either.

What’s with all the Suzuki and PLD comparisons? We are not trading one for the other. The point is to have two very good young top 6 Cs. Also. If PLD does come here, comparing point totals between the two would be stupid. Suzuki is going to have Caufield on his wing. PLD will likely have Gallagher. Nuff said.
Apparently PLD can also play LW

I would think that since Dubois was at the draft that a contract had already been agreed on pending a trade going through.

I am curious about the Florida 1st. The Habs received it unprotected. But if Habs in turn send that pick in a separate trade, does the pick have to stay unprotected? Or can the Habs add a condition to it?
I'm pretty sure that they can put a condition in the trade that would switch the pick to another one if the Flo pick was top 10 for example. That would be like the deal for Dvorak that involved CAR 1st.

Yes! Best case situation is we trade Panthers 1st and a prospect like Kidney and then two contracts where salary in matches salary out. Then we still have Suzuki, Dach, Dvorak and PLD would look very good on the Suzuki line eh? Maybe not right away but it's an option for us.

However, I think Dvorak goes the other way. No way the Jets trade Dubois and have Scheifele then then a major drop after him at center.

Les say Dach and Evans take steps forward in the next year or two. Roster in 2+ years could look like this...

Dubois / Suzuki / Caufield
Slaf / Dach / Anderson

Some people feel he plays better at LW.
Yeah I like having versatile players like Suzuki who can play wing if possible. Imo, unless you can give up a few contracts in a potential trade just wait for PLD to sign in Montreal as a FA. Positionally, I can see him playing LW or C depending on who Habs draft in 2023. If it's someone like Fantilli or Dvorsky then PLD can move to the wing. If it's someone like Yager then he knows the C position and can easily play 2C

Suzuki and Caufield are never going to happen but neither can one underestimate a counterpart. Maybe Chevaldayoff will find a better return just flipping Dubois to another team and let them figure out if they can convince him to sign long term.
How much better of a return will a team give to get a guy they believe will walk in two years? Plus with his case going to arbitration, you are acquiring someone whose cap hit is completely unknown.

I'd give up the 2024 1st for Dubois.
I’d give up the Florida pick. Not sure why people are so reluctant. The Panthers might regress, but it won’t be going from 122 points to 85. Plus you can put Top 10 protected with it becoming an unprotected Habs 2024 1st rounder.

Clearly a terrible team if Josh Anderson and his negative value can play on the 2nd line. :sarcasm:

For those wondering why go after him now... this is how I see it and I'll use a dating example to explain the situation.

Lets pretend you are a 3/10 right now, but you know... you want to be better and want to improve yourself. You're willing to go to the gym and work on yourself. You meet a girl, she's a 8/10 and interested in you... Would you refuse to go out with her because your not a 7/10 or 8/10 now? No, you would go out with her, stick to the plan of bettering yourself... for yourself and just praise your lucky star that you meet her and like you for you!

Enough with this non sense of "we are not there yet" as a team. For once, a good player wants to come play here. go get him. Send a positive message to other local player that you will embrace them if they want to come, send a positive message to your current roster about the fact that despite being hard time, it's not as if this was Siberia. Grow a new culture....

You dont have to overpay, you have the Jets by the balls right now. let the agent and the players devalue the asset in a trade so that the only option is to be traded to MTL and that let them realize that a deal right now of Dvorak, pick and b-prospect is as good as it gets. Be patient, but keep the pressure on.

At the time, they kind of did. Pionk turned into a player but wasn't that highly regarded at the time, if memory serves. Much like Roslavic when he was included in the Laine trade and went from a 3rd line center to no.1 in Columbus. He was a throw in at the time with some potential upside.
A bit tongue & cheek on my part..

Pionk became available because NYR seized the opportunity to acquire Fox from Canes via Cgy

His case isn't going to arbitration, though. At least not player-elected arbitration. PLD didn't file for it.

Today is the deadline for team-elected arbitration filings. So the only way this goes to arbitration is because of the Jets. But I don't see them do that.

So who is going to give a nice enough package to acquire a player that is holding out?

Cheveldayoff and Gorton have done this dance before, with the Rangers acquiring Trouba. Both guys are stubborn and both guys dug in for the long haul. I suspect a deal will happen, but I wouldn’t expect it to happen anytime soon, unless they were very close in their previous discussions. The Habs want the player, the Jets want to save face, somewhere in the middle is where both Hughes and Chevaldaoff will have to meet. I think it’s a foregone conclusion PLD is coming here, it’s just a matter of who’s going to blink first.

It will get done. PLD very explicit in not player for Jets and you can't have that in an already difunctional locker room. It's a game of chicken at the moment.

Chevaldayoff scewed up every which way. I would have thought Brisson would have told him Dubois wants to play for the Habs. But mybe the trade was completed wihout informing Brisson.
In any event the Chevy should have fired Maurice and gotten rid of Wheeler (and maybe Scheifele) and kept Laine.
I think that was the plan this year with keeping Dubois long term instead of Laine. It's just that everything is going sideways. Dubois isn't signing long-term and Wheeler's is worth less than Pacioretty on the trade market...

Lets get Dubois done already!!!!

Anderson - Suzuki - Caufield - Continuation from the second half of last year
Slaf - PLD - Gally - Gally with the comeback season. Slaf shielded by two vets
Drouin - Dach - Dad/Hoff - Surround Dach with some firepower
Pitlick - Evans - Armia - Defensive line

If Slaf forces his way onto this team we have a ton of forwards.

I think the best thing PLD should do now is sign his QO. He has until July 22nd to accept it. He should remain a pro throughout. If he isn't traded in the off-season, he should go into camp and the season with the Jets and take it from there.
Signing the QO would put him under contract, and would prevent the Agent to speak to MTL... that may diminish the pressure on Winnipeg to trade him.

I would advise him to not sign, wait and see what happen during the next few weeks, say that he'll report where ever he has a contract and keep it at that for now.

We got time. Patience is a virtue. Habs in driver's seat on this one

Switch Dad and Gally - we need Dadanov to increase his value as much as possible.
