I'm aware, but they are trying to win now and well what do you give? Zadina and a first is not realistic.
Olli Maatta? He's less than 2 years older than Nylander himself. 2-time Cup winner. Kubalik? Ultra cheap winger that can likely score in that top 6.

They'll ask but won't get young core players for a player they can't afford to keep. Tkachuk was traded for players 4+ years older than him. EDIT to up the age, didn't realize the gap was even that big.

Maatta and Kubalik are junk for a top line forward. We just got them for free in last free agency.

Tkachuk was traded for a guy coming off a 100 pt season and a top 4 dman that had Hronek like numbers and a 1st.

A 24yo coming off a 100pt season was traded for two pending UFAs (aged 28 and 29) and a 1st. Bear that in mind. There was no pre-trade conversation about extensions from the Florida side of things.

27yo Nylander doesn't have anywhere near that kind of pull.

And how you get a player doesn't impact his value. $2.5M for a 20/20 guy is gold in the cap era. And a $3M cup-proven D that can play 20+ a night? Also gold.

I'd have offered a 2nd and a 3rd or Veleno and a 3rd. He'd be a great upgrade to the 3rd line center slot.
From now on, I'd offer a 2nd for any NHL roster player. Draper is just gonna throw that pick away anyways.

If your scouting team sucks, and you're not willing to fire them, then you might as well use the picks in trades. All of them except the first rounder.

I didn't even bother to scroll back to figure out which player we're even talking about, lol.

Anyone catch the Yzerman presser after day 2? In typical Yzerman fashion he didnt comment much on Yamamoto, thinks Kostin can be a regular and wants to improve scoring, goaltending and a right hand D in free agency/trade. Not really earth shattering news but it supports the draft logic.

I think he didn't want to comment on Yamamoto before he had a chance to talk to him. It might be a quick sort of "are you willing to essentially be a tryout with a potential waiver at the end of the summer, or would you rather just be bought out?"

I dont see a Yamamto buy out as a plan A or B but I am very much a lazy boy GM. For 3 million, why not let him play and waive him or trade with retention. Plan A is he scores closer to 2 seasons ago and you have a RFA still following the season, same with Kostin. Just my opinion, replace Sundqvist, Sutter, Erne and Chiasson with 2 guys, allow internal growth and hope to replace Bert and Vrana with 1 really good long term piece in some form.

Maybe Yzerman will want to keep Senators with that 9M qo threat still on the books through free agency. They can't really bolster the roster, if DeBrincat is still hanging there with a possibility to play for last year.

Stevie will sign his guys, Ottawa can¨t get any better, and after free agency, with best players already gone, he'll goes back ask for this trade. :)

Control the market.

If Nylander is at all available I’d go in guns blazing for him…he’s the best case of guys like Benson I was slamming the table for. Kid is very underrated and unappreciated in Toronto for what he brings. He’d instantly be our best player.

Yeah, Nyander would be pefect to Larkin's RW.

Both are same aged:
- Larkin, 1996, June 30th
- Nylander, 1996, June 1st

BTW, it's Larkin birthday, so let's trade a nice present for him!

Would Kubalik and Lucas Raymond be decent offer?

That would help a lot with Leafs' cap issues.

I’m not trading Raymond. If that’s what it takes I’ll back out.

Trade Seider for Hedman.
Edvinsson for Karlsson
Kasper for Oreilly
Danielson for Bergeron

We’ll be stacked and bypass all the development parts!

Why are you acting like an idiot?

Nylander is same aged as Larkin. that's our top line core age. Walman is same, Määttä, Husso. Fabbri.

You are just love in Raymond, who just had a piss poor season, and when he could never reach higher level than Nylander already is. We don't really know yet.

You take the sure bet, if there's a chance. Like there vould be at Leafs current cap hell. Pay an incentive like Kubalik for that, and sign other UFA to replace Kubalik after the trade. Easy puzzle.

It's definitely a realistic trade.

And I would sign ROR and Bergeron for free as UFA, if they like to join, and keep the Kasper and Danielson.

Not acting like an idiot. Just speculating with smart hockey moves like Yzerman,

cause that’s not a smart hockey move dude. You give up 6 years of control for Nylander. Raymond is 21. Hell be flirting with 70 points next year you’d trade that for nylander who maybe hits 85?…

Trade Idea: deal away how literal they're being with team philosophy. They had five picks in the top 43, only used one on a forward, and none on trades to help boost the team in the next few years.

I'm sure the 2027-28 Red Wings will be downright exhilarating when they finally make the playoffs. And have half their fanbase left.
