I would like to see the leafs secure a dman but am unconvinced they can get an adequate one that is better than what they have for the cap they have left
That said, I think they should trade for James Riemer as an adequate option in net.
I would much rather go with Woll than spend what few assets we have left (I know it probably wouldn’t cost much) on another goalie. I agree with what you said about us needing a top 4 d, but not having enough cap.

I said this earlier in the week. Or something to this effect.

In my humble OPINE:

Move Marner back with Matthews, Nylander back with ROR and JT.
If Kneis is really the second coming, then play him with Matthews and Marner. He is big, 6'3" and can skate. I do not know much about his physical game, but what I read is that he is not shy of it.
Knies Matthes Marner
JT ROR Nylander

Move Bunting down to 3rd line where he belongs.
Bunting Engvall Jarnrok

ZAR Kampf Acciari
I just love this line. Can skate, hit, grind, play good D
Simmonds (I would keep Simmonds around for experience and a physical replacement)

I would match this bottom 6 with any in the league

And if Knies turns out to be better or even just as effective as Bunting playing with the M & M Boys, then we have two great top lines

Like most leaf fans I;d like to see our bottom 6 tougher to play against, Lafferty and Trenin would be a good start. Both are really good PKers, Lafferty has some of the best speed in the league and is tied for Shorties. According to the 32 thoughts podcast, anything that is not Josi, Forsberg or Saros is up for sale in Nashville. Trenin is a , well read this scouting report.

Yakov Trenin • #13 • LW
Ht/Wt : 6'2", 201 lbs.
Born : Jan 13, 1997 (26 yrs) in Chelyabinsk, RUS
Experience : 4 years
Drafted : Drafted by Nashville in 2015 (2/55).
Shoots : L
SCOUTING REPORT
The Russian forward is as tough as nails and will drop the gloves with anyone. More than just a fourth-line scrapper, he has patience, vision and good playmaking skills. Plays well without the puck. Is still learning when to pass and when to take the shot himself. Can play either wing or center and is a solid penalty killer.
Long Range Potential : Big, tough two-way forward.

If the story that there are only 3 untouchables in Nashville, Ekholm and McDonnaugh are both exactly what we need, the issue with them they both have 4 years remaining on their term, are in their early 30's and are north of $6 million annually.

Leafs have been linked to Ekholm in the past. Ek is a great all around defender and is really good on the PK.

Mattias Ekholm • #14 • D
Ht/Wt : 6'4", 215 lbs.
Born : May 24, 1990 (32 yrs) in Borlange, SWE
Experience : 12 years
Drafted : Drafted by Nashville in 2009 (4/102).
Shoots : L
SCOUTING REPORT
Is not the most physical defenseman in the NHL despite his size, but he does a lot of other things effectively to keep the puck out of his team's net. He moves the puck well, has a big shot and knows how and where to move the puck. Is capable of playing huge minutes, especially on the penalty kill. He is not flashy, but does not make a lot of mistakes. He is as low-maintenance as they come.
Long Range Potential : Reliable, rock-solid defenseman.

Sam Lafferty • #24 • C
Ht/Wt : 6'1", 195 lbs.
Born : Mar 6, 1995 (27 yrs) in Hollidaysburg, PA
Experience : 4 years
Drafted : Drafted by Pittsburgh in 2014 (4/113).
Acquired : Acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh in 2022.
Shoots : R

SCOUTING REPORT
Skates well and offers plenty of energy, though his offensive skills are limited. Uses his speed effectively on the forecheck to make life miserable for opposing defensemen. Can pick up his teammates' pace with his energy. Is also becoming a useful penalty killer. The fact he can play any forward position adds to his overall value.
Long Range Potential : Pesky depth forward.

I’m thinking it will be Schenn, especially since they just put Benn on waivers (unless that has something to do with the cap).

That could be it, we have 4.4 in cap space, Murray is 4.6, if we send Woll down and bring Murray back, Benn's cap space allows us to bring Murray back

We could demote Anderson or Woll to bring Murray off LTIR without demoting Benn. But there are plenty of reasons to waive someone right now.

It cold be they have a deal lined up for a Dman right now, it could also be they want increased roster flexibility or an extra contract space. Maybe they just thought it was a good time to try to get him to pass through unclaimed.
Anderson was waived this week but not sent down. It helps the club understand what their options are ahead of the deadline.

The whole soft as butter bs is a narrative generated by opposing team fans and digested by self proclaimed home fans who accept everything they hear as gospel. You don't need to look to far from the leafs own games to see what is happening.
I don't have a clip of Kucherov actually kicking marner but this vid should suffice to back up the dirty evidence.

If a Leaf did that, he would get suspended

Not sure if Anderson's salary counts towards the cap if he is in the AHL, his Minor league salary is $800k, they might just be trying to find a way to dump and entire salary without it counting against the cap.

Anderson’s contract doesn’t count against the cap if he is in the AHL.
But he currently isn’t in the AHL. The Leafs waived him last week but never actually demoted him.

Acquire a goalie body to put put side by side with Woll on the depth chart.
Acquire one or two depth defensemen just because the team's defense has taken a hit this season. That's unless bodies like Mete, Hollowell, Kral and Dahlstrom will be able to play later this season.

If that is the case the Leafs are trying to free up cap space/ roster spot without having to add a sweetener.

Unrealistic I reckon, but would a Saros make us the team to beat?

For fantasy's sake, would you move a 1st, Knies + for him?
Chinese Finger Traps; Love 'em!

For fantasy's and in reality's sake, sure: Late first, top 5 goalie in the league. If Tanner Jeannot is still there, you make a deal to acquire both and a depth D.

Well you're on the right track if you want to give the Leafs a goalie comparable to the Leafs expected competition in rounds #1 and 2 vs TB and Boston

Saros vs Ullmark and Vasilevskiy would at least level the playing surface in net based on goalies making key saves above expected.

If you scroll just a little bit further, you'll see Samsanov (8th).

Is it that much of an upgrade? It is one extra goal saved every 5 games.

Not THE team to beat. That is Boston regardless of what happens over this coming week. It would be a massive win though.

I hope he gets Schenn, I'd like to see them pick up someone who can step in on the left side for injury reasons like a Tinordi. So like Schenn, Tinordi and maybe Domi for the extra offense and grit. Schenn and Domi would be a great story.

Just for fun, and Salary Cap/acquisition costs be damned! :)

With Boston the top team in the NHL on a record setting points pace and with their new additions particularly Orlov making the best defensive team better, you would hope/think that Leafs will need to make a significant upgrade to their Dcore in hopes of closing that gap again.
