I don't get the feeling we had any backup plan in the event that we didn't get Meier. I think we had all our eggs in that basket, which is why Waddell was pissed when we were rejected
If trading a young roster player was out of the question there likely wasn’t any backup plan as no one would fit that criteria.

I'm disappointed that they didn't make any moves today. Puljujarvi and Gostisbehere are smart moves, but not nearly the caliber of trade that we were looking for at this TDL.

I would have been more disappointed if they started flailing around and throwing assets at mediocre players just to create an appearance of effort. They didn't see a trade they felt was advantageous, and they stuck to it. I can respect that.

At the end of the day we're in a small group of Cup contending teams that are hoping to catch fire if Boston falters. That's what we were 2 weeks ago, and it hasn't changed. It's just that we're in the pack instead of leading it. Disappointing but not devastating.

Moving on.

This sums up my thoughts pretty well, good post.

...get Chychrun who would've been an excellent add (Ottawa might have dropped out and we got him for the discount), and would then allow us to trade one of Skjei or Pesce in the offseason as a package for a top 6 forward while also improving our blue line long term with a young player on a cap friendly contract with term.
Does anybody else remember the last time we had a stacked A F defense and had an offseason plan to flip a spare D for a premier player upfront?

We parlayed Justin Faulk and a 2020 5th (Pavel Novak, selected by MIN) into Joel Edmundson, Dominik Bokk and a 2021 seventh-round pick we used on Nikita Guslistov.

Don't count our chickens before they hatch; have the deal in-hand to flip (Skjei, Chychrun, or Pesce) for that forward or do it as a 3-way. Because, if anyone is going to get caught in a hard place and end up taking sub-optimal value because we have to make a move...it's us.

I really don't have a problem with standing pat today. This team has a lot of talent on the way, no sense in trading those assets away. Rangers loaded up and the canes don't match up with them well anyways. The difference is the rangers now have a short window to win a cup. The canes will be a contender for years.

there was no one available today that would have made anyone happy... once we lost out on Meier, who would have made anyone happy...Tarasenko was gone and reading back on the thread not too many people wanted him, Kane or Horvat (i know some did) most were saying Orielly was too slow and washed up... Larkan resigned... Toews not available....i don't know who they could have gotten after they missed out on Meier that would honestly made that big a difference. Aggressive big splash was obviously expecting to be able to get him... and i still like our chances anyway, its going to be a slugfest

The only reason this team isn't currently in the lead for the President's Cup is because Boston is having literally the best season in the history of the league.

Maybe it's ok sometimes to play it safe.
It's also ok to criticize a front office that hasn't won a single thing yet. Does criticizing them mean they are horrible and should be fired? No, but it's not black and white like some people think.

Maybe. Or maybe we are the friendzoned team of the NHL: we have a chance but never take the risk and end up watching as someone else gets to dance with the girl.

But at least we are still friends.

From Tampa’s GM. Sounds like a sound strategy that Carolina is following.

TB at the TDL paid a big price to get players who fit their cap for another playoff run or two. They are not swinging for that $6 million plus roster player. Looking for that $2 mill and under guy who is under contract like Goodrow, Coleman, Hagel, Jeannot that fits a role that their top guys don't do. TB has their high paid core of Vasi, Point, Kuch, Stamkos, Hedman, Serg counting like $50 mill vs the cap. They fill out the rest with lower priced players. So, willing to move 1st rounders for players who either are RFA or have 1-2 more years after acquiring them.

That girl bangs somebody once a year, and it's someone new every year, and every year you have to beat everybody else's ass to bang that girl.

Sometimes you just gotta hit the gym and wait your turn.

No way is Nikishin going to live up to anyone's expectations.

Well, accept for @bleedgreen 's. He thinks the kid might have a future in plastics.
Lol I do think he’s a great prospect. That’s it though, until he’s over playing and showing he can be the same kind of player here. Anyone saying they can tell based on how he’s doing there how he’s gonna do here is blowing smoke.

We get into these conversations and it feels like battle lines are drawn. I’m not trying to fight about it, believe it or not I’m rooting for him and want him to be everything he seems.

Same as Morrow.

For me, Necas and Burns plus our D scoring more this year are the positives despite losing Tro and Nino. Plus, we have a healthy albeit playing less effectively Freddie. Plus, Pool party is probably a Fast replacement (and younger bigger faster).

The negatives are the goal scoring miss plus our 3D vulnerability (to repeat why we needed Chryrun).

Is Waddell’s press conference accessible?
Burns only makes up for losing Tony, while adding just a few more points. I also only think he’s marginally better defensively.

Necas makes up for Nino. We haven’t come close to replacing Tro, not just the score sheet as much as righty draws and general solid center play.
