Adams could salvage this by getting Provorov from Philly while his value is slightly diminished. Hes a stud, right shot, would slot in perfectly with Power.

Looks like one of the best GMS in the NHL is also throwing in the towel due to the eastern conference being ridiculously stacked and having no chance at the cup.
Throwing in the towel means he’s DOING SOMETHING. That’s not what we are doing. We are doing nothing.

You want to throw in the towel? Fine... All for it. Let’s get Olofsson and Joker out of here before tomorrow.

He shoots left according to his stat pages. Would like him as a player but I don't care for bringing in controversial characters, regardless of what that controversy is. We tried that already with Kane.

damn it i was reading about 2 other RD and my brain melted

I could get that, because that's what I think, but once Ekholm (who did fit the need) was traded, the price for Chychrun became a reasonable move.

Here is the thing. If they didn't think he was the right fit, then why were they even in on it?
Maybe they weren't and it was overblown by the media.

I think there are two likely reasons why the Sabres didn't land Chychrun:

1) The Sabres interest was overblown by the media and they were not really that interested in him
2) The Sabres valued their 2023 1st to the extent that they were unwilling to top the Senators offer.

And we do not know which one is what really happened.

Watching how Tampa, Carolina and Boston have done business shows teams that make it fit. Watch how the best operate and emulate them. If they had to bridge one of the kids, do it then. If it pushes someone out, flip them for more futures to use in trade for specific contract and style fits. Or they stratify their salary structure and enroll people in taking payroll at a level of where they fit in.

Waiting because of fear of what they might one day make is not prudent either. It's wasteful.
Tampa is a masterclass on how to manage your cap and continue to keep your core competitive. Seems like too many are married to the idea that we have like 12-15 core players especially when you start counting prospects among them, and that's just never going to work.

That's how the league is designed -- small market teams aren't meant to be competitive with the big market ones, because the league otherwise doesn't do nearly as well financially.
This small market team has the most unused cap space because they want …..not because they’re small. They have a ton of future assets because they want to…not because they’re small.

They could build any team they want from where they are. And won’t. Because they don’t want to. Not because they’re small

I'm not sure which option I'm more disappointed in possibly being true.

Holy crap. When was the last time so many teams gutted their picks for rentals at the deadline. It’s crazy.

Playoffs are going to be fun this year to watch
I was listening to a podcast earlier, can't remember which one. They indicated that after pick #24 in the first round, there is something like a 2.4% chance you get a player who will play at least 100 NHL games. Really brings into perspective how valuable picks are after the first round. Clearly Tampa is moving forward with this philosophy.
