There is still time, but so far....KA is losing this game of GM musical chairs. The top players on my list that could have had good longterm impact are all gone. Last year when he failed to trade any of our UFA's for anything, I tilted my head with curiosity. So far this year it is again looking like we may be going to fail the deadline again. Right now I am expecting KA to find himself with no chair to sit in by end of day friday, and will watch this team slowly slip out of the playoffs. HALF the players on our team need replacing, so they should be active in making changes.

I realize that a third of this board is enamored with draft picks and prospects we won't see for many years to come if at all, but I am not one of them. There is enough core here to start putting muscle on the skeleton.

Oh yeah, if Buffalo would've signed him to the contract many wanted- it would've been face on them. That contract would've hampered us in the future. Ugly!

Goaltenders in FA is largely a crapshoot. Ive asked in the past who posters wanted from last year's FA crop or via trade, and the question largely falls on deaf ears.
I think the fact is that goalies are so unpredictable. Campbell hasn't suddenly become terrible & he certainly looked like a solid starter when he was in Toronto...

You just need to get lucky to some extent. But you can also help out by putting a solid defence in front of whoever you have - and we literally haven't done that at all during any of these drought years...

Maybe Portillo will sign? Is there a more wide open opportunity in the league for a goalie than the Sabres? He could split 50/50 with Levi in Rochester next year and possibly have the inside track for the starter’s job depending on how that goes.

I don't think that is the Sabres plan. They want the starter to get 55-ish games per their conversations about UPL and they also will want some sort of vet #4 in case something happens in Buffalo. There is one spot now and Levi has the inside track.

There isn't realistically a goalie available who would make sense to acquire right now. Maybe Vejmelka from Arizona if a Chychrun deal happens - but he's not much more than a question mark himself.

Remember how many of us wanted Campbell in the summer & how bad he's now looking for Edmonton ?

They certainly need to do more - but it's probably going to be a trade/FA signing in the offseason after Anderson retires.

If Demko would come cheaply.......I'd consider him. I think with a fully healthy offseason and a decent team in front of him, he'll rebound to at least an NHL-average goalie.

But when I say cheaply, I'm talking like UPL and a 2nd.

Might not do us much good this season, but it could be a substantial upgrade next year.

LOL you out of your mind. Demko would be a massive upgrade in net.

Portillo could play in Cincy or vice versa is Levi is struggling.

Goalies are voodoo and those who say they aren't are the witch doctors who practice the craft.

Seriously though, they are volatile. Ullmark last year vs. Ullmark this year - it takes time to settle in and learn the team one is playing behind. Some goalies stop shots from certain areas better than from other places. If a team is prone to giving up things from a spot the goalie struggles with, that's going to make it harder to get a save. They need to be looking at who can consistently get them some stops AND improve their play among their skaters, particularly the forwards.

Demko would be great - but i don't know why Vancouver would trade him at this point, short of a complete overpay. If all it took was UPL + R2 i suspect he'd have been moved already.

From NHL:
General manager Kevyn Adams said trade chatter has been "crazy busy" this week, adding that the Sabres are keeping their options open on any and all fronts.

"I think it's my job to be a part of every conversation to know what's available, what it takes, what the landscape is," Adams told NHL.com. "It's my job."

Are the Sabres interested in rental players?

"We're looking to improve but we're trying to set up the long-term sustainability for success," Adams said. "We'll see if there are ways to improve but we're not going to do something short-term at the cost of what it could do to our franchise long-term."

Adams said the Sabres are not focusing in on any particular position.

"I don't look at it that way. I think you have to be careful not to limit yourself like that," he said. "I think you try to add talent to your team in whatever way makes sense.

"If the deadline passes, I'm extremely confident in the roster we have now. But that doesn't stop you from trying to make it better. In fact, I get up every day saying, 'How can we make it better'."

He is saying alot without saying nothing at all. me thinks he was was planning on attending the Bedard sweepstakes before the team made a push and don't know what to do now.

I think the issue is that most any team that could actually use him don't really have the room for him, and I doudt Vancouver actually wants to use a retention slot on him to make it happen.

I think it only makes sense for Vancouver to deal him if they can be done with his whole cap hit......which both limits the return they'd get for him AND the number of teams that would actually be interested.

If you're Portillo.....do you want to sign in Buffalo so you can go play in the ECHL, or do you sign with an organization who'll put you as the starter in their AHL team?

That's the issue.
If I'm Portillo, I sign, clown on that f*** boy from Northeastern, steal the crease and then tell Adams to piss off when it comes to re-signing unless I'm offered big money, then water under the bridge etc..

I read this as, "prices are bananas and I'm not gunna blow through assets and the bargain bin is marked up. I'll keep an eye on guys leading up to Friday to see if prices go down and if someone bites on Oloffson or Bryson and pays a premium I'll do it, if not, y'all get what you're seeing ".

This all sounds good, but he has yet to do anything at ANY position for over a year. There have been many players moved who would have improved the team now and for the future. I'm not saying I'd want him to do every one of those trades, but his actions are yet to match his words.

I get being in on everything, but you don't see areas where you have more need than others? This makes me question again whether he knows how to build a good roster if he can't even prioritize what our needs are.
