For Ekholm? Why not? He's more of what we need on defense than Chychrun is, IMO. He's tough, rugged, physical and has a ton of playoff experience. Yeah, that contract may not age well......but I'd think even at the end of it he'll be at worst a serviceable 3rd pair/PK guy.
He has some miles on him, he will be 33 with three years remaining with some decent coin. I couldn't do it. The pros are he is dependable and what this team needs but I just can't for two firsts. My 2cents

Would a guy like Sam Lafferty be a trade possibility? Good bottom six faceoff and PK guy, plenty of speed and signed through 2024 at a reasonable price? Seems like that hits a lot of check marks with Adams plan.
Cap strapped teams will overpay because he is cheap and I'm not interested to pay a big price for a guy that was traded just last season for Alex Nylander.

Possible fill-in for Tuch?

Don't think we're in on any offensive-only forwards. Quinn certainly looked solid in Tuch's place and Mitts/Cozens might be a thing, with Krebs anchoring the 3rd line. I don't really see us doing much of anything in the forward department. MAYBE a veteran 4th line type......but that's even a stretch I think.

What's he have left? 3 years? ... I have a hard time justifying 2 first round picks for 3 years.

Lets just make the Chychrun move and get it over with. The team has some magic this year, head into the playoffs on a heater and beat Toronto in the 1st round. Anything can happen after that. Our goalies stink, but have 4 stud Defenseman can help a bit. We have an over abundance of prospects right now and they literally cant keep them all.
We'd have an over abundance of LHD then. The entire top 4 to be exact.

I think you're just having a laugh at Nylander's expense (I'm all for that since I HATED that pick), but Lafferty is a late-blooming player getting better, with good skating, energy, PK ability, grit. He's a younger, faster, cheaper Okposo that can also play C. There's really no downside if you just think about him in a 4th line role.

Got to the Arizona part and Friedman seems to think they are going to make moves beyond just Chychrun. That could put Vejmelka or Schmaltz or others into play. What that means... don't know. But perhaps Crouse wet dreams are not for naught.
Would love the idea of Crouse, but have to imagine the price would be the sky, plus another sky.

Yeah, 3 after this. I have an easier time justifiying the 2 firsts for Ekholm than I do two firsts for Chychrun.

Yes, Chychrun is younger......but he's also signed for only 2 years after this one and brings a lot of what we already have on defense.

I like Ekholm's age -- we could use another veteran leader who's played a bunch of playoff games. Especially on D. He (like Chych) can play either side effectively. But he's far more physical and rough to play against, which gives him the edge.....even as he gets older.

But that's me.

I think Chicago may have tried to sell him high to Tampa for their eventual matchup in the playoffs by the Hawks playing him against Matthews in their recent games.

I've been more of a no on Lafferty when looking at him vs. Jost. I don't think the bump is necessarily enough to justify a price, even digging in on Lafferty's PKing ability. So... maybe? We know Jost can play up a bit and get something out of other linemates for some reason (which I think is the abandon with which he has played in his time in Buffalo, giving no shits to stay in the show as it were), could Lafferty do that? But it's an idea.

The price is the downside, we have the cap space to add a similar player with a higher cap hit for less.

Please no
You’re crazy, JVR is awesome and brings an element that this team doesn’t have. I wouldn’t want to pay the price in this market, but in the abstract I would absolutely love having that dude on this team.

I assume you mean net front presence in the element he brings? ... Noted.. but that is the only element he brings. He is a bigger VO .. who scores in a different place on the ice

I wonder at Schmaltz too. 27, reasonable deal, good quicks, has some ties to the NTDP for a moment as well as a U20 team that Don was assistant coach on. Just wondering.

Ok true but... all that for Jeannot?

JBB has a type. This is the fourth time he's spent on a depth guy for fit reasons rather than just for height inside the lineup - Goodrow, Coleman, Hagel and now Jeannot. It's not a surprise he would go in for Jeannot, even him throwing in a bunch of low-chance lottery tickets into the mix.

No every arena does not you're assuming, Two stadiums, Dallas and Cincinnati, have MRI scanners in their stadium, but because MRI scans take so long, most teams have not added them. And thats for the NFL which has way nicer/equipped stadiums
depends on what is being scanned, I have hardly been in there any longer than 15min for head; don't know why ankle takes so long (35min)

Did he tho? Did we miss Joel Armia or Brendan Lemuiex? It didn't work because he bought players that had other stuff on their minds besides hockey. He chose the wrong players.. can easily happen with draft picks.
Other than the Fasching/Deslauriers deal I think his failure was more in the mix of players he acquired and their mindset like you said. He used a lot of assets to build a team that never galvanized and honestly… never game much of a shit on the ice

Almost at the end of the 32 Thoughts from yesterday and Friedman mentions Buffalo in the Seattle commentary that at least Seattle is looking for faceoff help but Buffalo is also bad at it. He didn't straight up say they were going to find someone to improve there, but it was mentioned.

I

guess my point is, everybody wants to cash in before the rebuild is complete, like Murray did. All these crazy spenders are trying to win a cup THIS year. That’s not where the Sabres are.
There is a middle ground between what KA is doing and what Murray did. I don't see many looking for a Murray like action. But not sitting around hoping either.

The bolded is the problem. As imbalanced as our prospect pipeline is, I do not believe you can complete the rebuild without some trades. You will just never get there.

Also, good management is always trying to improve the team, building, balancing, retooling, etc.
