Only reason I can think of to not go after the smaller pieces now is they want to maximize what little capspace they have/can generate in a more impactful acquisition.
I'll quote my expanded thoughts below. I actually think Trenin is probably one of the more impactful pieces the Canucks could have added, and one that would fit the club very nicely. And the price was very reasonable.

I'll sound a little odd but I'd much rather have Trenin for a 3rd + C prospect than Guentzel for whatever he'll cost.
After digging into Trenin a little bit more (so beyond my gut reaction), I am...actually even more bummed that Allvin did not outbid the Avs on him. I think this is the one trade, out of all the others, I wish the Canucks were involved. The price was not too high at all.

Strong defensive value. Forechecking demon. And he can pot in a few goals. This is what every team wants in its bottom-six. And he plays the exact style that will endear him to Tocchet and fit with the Canucks' style. And he could somewhat replace Joshua's role immediately, while he is still out.

Not connected at all but I still really like Eberle. Right handed, right winger to push Mikheyev down and was great last year for the Kraken in their run. Solid 2nd line winger and probably won't cost the moon like Guentzel.

This is a toughie. I really dislike Eberle because of some interactions I've had with him/observed of him, but that was years ago and maybe he's matured. Not sure how I'd feel seeing him on the team.

I think you just have to live with the Lindholm thing unless you’re getting him to the place he wants to be in UFA anyways.

Sometimes shit just doesn’t work out and you have to eat it. It is what it is.

I’m a little meh on how that they didn’t finish that Lindholm deal with Tanev in it at the time. I would have been sticky about that and been willing to let that deal die.

Still short a top four D and another F.

yeah that hanifin contract is a steal and it is good for our comparables for hronek

honestly shocked he signed that, he could easily push 9m aav on the open market
Part of the reason why I was suggesting we should trade for Hanifin earlier in the year was because of the rumoured 7.5x8 agreed upon deal with CGY… I would have matched that in a heartbeat

It looks like Hanafin basically manoeuvred his way to Vegas by leaking he wouldn't extend with anyone except like 2-3 teams. Based on that deal, it's obviously where he wanted to play.
ok but then he took 2m AAV less than what he was worth? weird move

Also, I'm sure it was discussed, but good grief, Beau going for a 5th rounder. Dude's value is dropping faster than an Elon Musk owned company.

Drance has peculiar pro-scouting takes.

Is an advanced stats guy, but advocates for moving Garland instead of Mikheyev due to size and speed. Also likes/liked Whitecloud more than Hronek. Grain of salt.
His eye test takes are very bizarre

He called Brady Tkachuk a center.

Mikheyev size and speed is purely theoretical rather than what he actually is right now.

He’s skating like post-acl Roussel and hasn’t won a single 50/50 in the offensive zone since October

Much like the Forsling contract, location in this instance brings down the price. No income tax state.

Essentially, you’d have to add roughly $1-1.5M. Forsling’s contract is equivalent to about $6.6M, and if Hanifin signs for $7.2M, that’s roughly about $8.4M.

Regardless, Hronek should be much closer to $6M than to $7.5M. I’ve said it for awhile now, Hronek is $6-6.5M defenseman despite his numbers.

Hanafin wouldn't have signed here, so it's a moot point. He also handcuffed Calgary via his agent. They were telling every non-desired destination that there was zero chance of him re-signing.

Why do you think Hanifin is clearly better than Hronek? Just curious.

The Tanev interest and mis-deal is evidence they were willing to add D and push others down, including Zadarov. To go from that to not wanting any D at all would be odd.

And yes, some deals just don't work out (Lindholm), but that trade was smart to make at the time. I questioned it, and the value of Kuzmenko, but to get off of that salary while getting a top6 C, good trade regardless of him struggling to find purchase here.

They can make another run without Landeskog.

The Avs,Stars, Oilers and Vegas are strong tens built for a deep run.

Think the Avs are setup really nicely, with or without Landeskog. Stars don't got the game breakers the Avs got with Makar/Mack, Oilers D corps is not good enough, and with Vegas even though they won last year there's just something that seems off with them. I think the Avs with a legitimate 2nd line centre would've beat the Knights.

Forgetting about Hintz/Robertson with Duchene on the 2nd line and Johnston/Stankoven on the 3rd line hey?

This would be the first time I think that's come into play, at least from what I've seen...I'm not sure it's a great negotiating tactic from teams to say "We're going to give you x because if you signed in another city you would only get x-y despite signing for z."
