I think the Kap experiment has run its course. Well, I think it ran its course last season, but he's here again, so.

Just move the guy. He's way too panicky for a scoring line role, and he's part of the worst 3rd line in hockey. His sweet spot in a lineup is 3rd liner who can cheat up ice a bit and try to use his skating to create odd-man rushes or breakaways the other way, with a side of PK specialist who is a threat to go the other way if the PP team loses the puck, a la Grabner. But this team doesn't have the 3rd liners to allow him to do that, and he's not utilized that way on the PK so let some other team deal with his perpetual prospect brain before he inevitably plays himself overseas to some D-tier league.

They should have simply never brought him back. It was a bizarre decision.

I actually think Kapanen is most ideally suited to a more defensive oriented role. Use his speed for disruption. He's not small either so he could do some heavy lifting in the OFZ along the boards. I think his offensive IQ is too low and honestly even his raw offensive tools aren't quite good enough to be a waterbug scorer type. But he's fast and heavy enough to be a PIA third wheel on a really good third line I think. But that WOULD require actively working with him and adjusting some aspects of his game.

Yeah, I've said for a while that I think Kap's the kinda guy you have to build a line around. He's got very particular tendencies and has one attribute; speed. He's dumb as a bag of doorknobs on the ice and any time he has to think, the play is dead.

But this team doesn't have the luxury of building a 3rd line around Kap, and he's given them zero reason to even think about doing so. Had a nice flash of like 25-30 games in his first season back, then went on like a 100 game bender of f***awful hockey. And that was before he got re-signed! Bravo, chaps. At least you had the element of surprise, nobody saw that one comin'.

If he's actually on this block this is the only reason I could figure why.

Hextall initiating a trade like that would make him look a wee bit foolish, after all.

I don't see it happening. Would blow my mind if we trade him after basically moving out Marino and Matheson for him.

Not to mention that makes our top 3 RD Letang - Rutta - Ruh

Lol according to DK the locker room chemistry is really good, a band of brothers, fight for each other blah blah.

Sounds more like complacency.
Well we probably shouldn't pick and choose when to believe DK and when to not based on what we WANT to be true.

If he says they put Petry on the market and the locker room is all chummy, it either means:

1. Petry is not on the market and they hate each other
or
2. Petry IS on the market and they like each other

This has been the insufferable narrative all season. Chemistry doesn’t score goals or stop pucks.

Man I wish one of our draft picks panned out ala a Kaprizov, Barzal, Aho, or Pasta did. Really could have extended the window and taken salary out of the equation for a guy like JC.

-edit- It's still bizarre to me that Hextall's grand plan last summer was to reshape the blueline and free up cap by moving Marino, just to turn around three days later to use the freed up cap from dumping Marino on bringing back f***ing *Kapanen*.
I think you know why Sleepy was resistant when asked to write down his plan on a piece of paper. Newsflash: he doesn’t have a plan.

Yeah, that's the thing that annoys me about the usual discussion of drafting and developing here. Sure it's unlikely to get one of those kinds of players... but for years the club didn't even try. We drafted tons of pluggers, recruited lots of depth 13F kinds of guys, but by the time we were starting to swing for the fences, the window was almost closed and our most promising picks haven't panned out. Hell, most of the safe picks haven't panned out either.

Additionally, there was absolutely no impetus to get those kinds of players on the roster and there still isn't any drive to see if any of they WB/S reject toys could actually hack it in the big club, even as a 20-30 game kind of depth piece like Kunhackl or whatever.

I get that there is a lot of pressure to get roster players and whatnot, but the window has been closing for 5 years and had we gotten one of those kinds of players in the last 3 seasons, we would be in a completely different position. Barzal, for example, was seeing regular duty pretty much the year after his draft, and he was picked in precisely the same area we would be picking (and with our pick moreover).

Sleepy seems as anti-AHL as Sully, which is odd because of how much he allegedly covets our first round pick. Why even bother with the pick when you refuse to acknowledge the AHL exists? Dude went overboard signing fringe talent last summer so much that we can’t even tap the AHL unless we have some LTIR. But even before then, it took massive amounts of injuries or contract reasons for guys like POJ or Gaudreau to get a legitimate chance in the NHL. You’d thing sleepy would give away the first round pick for peanuts (I’m glad he’s not) since he hates younger players.

Hell, look at the Marino Matheson swap for Petry.

What makes anyone think they will make anything even approaching a significant move? Seems to me that Hextall and Burke like the team as is and they sure as hell like the coach. I have said this before but everyone with a brain knows that this team is going to limp to the finish line again and if they even make the playoffs they will go out in the first round yet again. Expect the exact same basic team and coaching staff to do the same thing next year. We have already entered the down years. Now it is just about waiting for the stars to completely bottom out so we can start the rebuild for real. Unfortunately that will not happen for another 4 years or so most likely. After all, they like the team.
