why does 2012 ring a bell, obama reelected no, nostradomus and the mayans were right, no oh yea we WON the freaking cup that year and maybe just maybe thats why DL didn't waste picking up guys like pirri or being held hostage by benning we are a pretty good team that has a great chance at winning a third cup ( can not still believe we won one never mind two ) with a great core and picked up vinny, schenn, and versteeg and brought scuds back and we have not been scoring but we have been in defence mode for a while and we know that is what wins championships , at least ours does , so heres to 2-1 games and getting gabby back down the road rested and creating some more moments that those of us around for the better parts of 5 decades still find hard to believe GO KINGS GO

I was defending DL. You really think a Kings fan would ever refer to 2012 as a bad thing? C'mon now.

so

and we still need a Voynov replacement

Agreed...seems like the Kings should start drafting a few more Euro defensemen,
as many of them have the skating and skill to be true top 4 guys.
We end up with pretty much the same defensemen type - Gravel, Forbort, Lintuniemi,
etc. Hope LaDue has higher upside.

It seems to me, that TONS of Euro drafted defensemen, seem to reach their
potential and often exceed their original perceived potential:

Eckman-Larsson, Eric Karlsson (was 15 overall - not considered a top 5 super elite)
and these ones that come out of nowhere - Vatanen, John Klingberg, and recent draftees Brodin, Larsson, and a few years back Hedman.

I am working and not a great post, cannot do research...as I am missing many, I am sure...but I wish the Kings would go after some top skill level, Euro defensemen in the draft! Or top Russians that will come over. Sure, there are Euro misses, but it seems like many of these guys exceed their projection and end up being great players. The Kings have stayed away from Europe of late and hope that changes - so am glad they took Cernak!

Check out this great Cernak find! Great article! Sounds like he's doing awesome.

Good article, Peter. Not too sure about the role modeling that's being done for Erik, but I enjoyed the article.

Something to look forward to this afternoon:

Comparing 2016 to 2006. Give your ****ing head a shake, man. Those 2006 names were free agent signings, firstly, and were stop gaps to fill roles. The trades in 2016 have all been complimentary.

Kings management have all said they expect Gaborik back by playoffs. There's no reason to doubt that until proven otherwise. And with Gaborik, our 1-9 is absurdly deep.

We're not replacing Voynov unless we're willing to part with Toffoli, or Pearson+++. That's just not going to happen. We have to fill that void from within, which means drafting followed by years of development. It is what it is.

The biggest acquisition was Ladd to Chicago. That's the only trade remotely approaching impact. We added an impact player in Lecavalier a month ago, who has been fantastic for us. Kopitar-Carter-half speed playing motivated Lecavalier is a ridiculous 1-2-3 at center that Chicago cannot match. This is how we beat them in 2014, mind you.

Stop panicking. This team has the best GAA in the league, they're in first place in the division, we have Quick, we have Doughty, we have Kopitar, Toffoli, Carter, the list goes on. This is the absolute best version of the Kings we were going to see in 2016, and at their best, they've proven they're a contender. No one wants to play us. We're the only team that makes Chicago slightly tremble. The Ducks have been chasing our coat tails since 2012.

Calm the **** down and wait for the playoffs. If we putter out in the first round, THEN hit the panic button.

Let's also remember, Ladd had 38 points and played with the likes of Wheeler and Little.

Versteeg has 33 points playing on a crapoy team like Carolina, where Staal has similar numbers and cost far more.

There was no Carter or Gaborik to be had this year, and like I said earlier, none of these trades will have a big payoff.

Slim pickings out there. Don't care about losing Zykov, he never really impressed me with anything in his tool box. Zykov reminded me a lot of Roland McKeown; highly touted draft picks that were extremely average on the ice, when watching them live.

Meh

hamhuis would have helped, but probably we didn't have draft picks/prospects to cough up anymore to get him

Lombardi admitted giving up high pick for Sekera last yr affected how he went into this trade deadline. "You learn from every deal you make"

Great post. Even calmed my panic nerves a little. Lucic was our best acquisition as lots of goals go in when he is infront of the net and his presense will be welcomed in the playoffs. Guys a beast in the playoffs. I think everyone will step it up a notch in the playoffs but if Kopitar doesnt perform like in 2013 then we are doomed .

Not true.
@friedgeHNIC

On Hamhuis: believe he was willing to waive for not only CHI & DAL, but LA, which had also shown some interest. To go East (1/2)...

The last I saw it was all about Chicago or Dallas. If Lombardi got in there, and Hamhuis was willing, great. Clearly Vancouver was being unreasonable.

atta boy Deaner....not having that 1st still gives me a lil sting when I think about it too.
cant say Im unhappy with this years TDL, I think Versteeg will workout. IMO we are still a #3ish dman from being the best team in the league but you cant have everything in the cap era. Bowman went all in so it will be interesting to see how the Hawks team looks beyond this season.

I think you mean if he does perform like 2013, we're doomed. And there's no way Kopitar was healthy during that playoffs. He looked like he was skating with a piano on his back. He's a PPG playoff player when healthy.

I'm sure the asking price was a first which we didn't have plus a solid prospect. With Hamhuis only limiting his trade destination to 2 or 3 teams , all who had made trades earlier, just not enough assets to deal for him.

Lucic - Kopitar - Gaborik
Pearson - Carter - Toffoli
Brown - LeCavalier - Versteeg
King - Lewis - Clifford
Nolan
Andreoff
Shore
Mersch

i'm ok with this

our D is a hot mess though

"This core isn't all that great."

Yeah. One of the top goalies in the league and the best big game goalie out there. One of the best D-men in the league, and another that is extremely underrated by many. And probably the best-two way center combo in the NHL.

Quick, Doughty, Muzzin, Kopitar, and Carter is definatly a core I'd consider not "all that great."

I don't expect Gaborik back this season because the Kings brass are to quiet about it. And Brown, Lewis and Clifford and King can't score for ****. Lewis on the 4th line would be ideal because of his defensive capabilities. If King goes to the 4th line as well that would be miracle.

If Gaborik comes back and our lineup look like this :

Lucic-Kopitar-Gaborik
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Brown-Lecavalier-Versteeg
King-Shore-Lewis

Only then will my eyes pop out of my head because that's a deep team. If Pearson continues his scoring of late and Gaborik is healthy.

Right on the nail. Lombardi was quoted saying the plan is to get him back but no guarantees. Do you guys still think we compete ? I know its going to be a battle but Gaborik will be missing. This means Versteeg will be on the top 2 lines and King stays on the 3rd. Pearson needs to continue stepping up and toffoli needs to get back on track and Kopitar cant go through any slumps like 2013. Lots of ands.....

Lets hope so because we are going to need him to be big for us this playoffs. He needs to lead his team along with Doughty. Gaborik will not be back so we cant afford any slumps.
