I heard this just now on NHL radio. Apparently DL has been shopping him hard for over a month now. I would be willing to package two 1st rounders just to get him off the books. The guy on NHL radio mentioned that if no trade, the Kings will buy him out.
Buying out Gaborik will carry a cap hit on the roster through 2025. His contract expires in 2021, but there's no way Lombardi can justify having him on the payroll until he's 39.
The annual cap hit on a buyout will breakdown as follows:
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout_calculator/marian-gaborik#results
2017-18: $1,125,000
2018-19: $1,625,000
2019-20: $3,025,000
2020-21: $3,125,000
2021-22: $1,325,000
2022-23: $1,325,000
2023-24: $1,325,000
2024-25: $1,325,000
I'm sure yet more money being paid to guys to not play for the Kings is going to make AEG so happy. And potentially for a coach as well.
If this were happening to the Ducks or Sharks we would be all on here daily making fun of them for how poorly they've been run.
Fun fact - Gaborik is on pace for more goals than Kopitar while playing 16 less games. Price/goal the guy's a bargain!
It sucks but what option do you recommend? If they trade him we're getting someone else's castaway or we're retaining on him. It's that, pay him to play in the A or pray he retires.
And the Hawks won two more Cups and reached the Conference Finals after having to make a series of difficult decisions, and they never struggle to get into the playoffs, unlike this team.
So yeah, maybe it isn't a good idea to compare both teams.
There isn't an option, just pointing it out.
7 years for 32 year old Gaborik was just so bad, it only gets overlooked because of Brown and Richards. I was a huge Gabby fan, and I actually still think he could function in the right system but 7 years for him was just inexcusable.
And Dean says he has learned from those mistakes but him offering Lucic 7 years last summer shows he probably hasn't.
A buyout would suck. I'd wait till after the expansion and maybe the offseason at least.
Honestly hoping this team will bounce back next year. Especially with Nolan Patrick in the line up.
