Time to put your trade deadline predictions in folks. I am going to go on a limp and say that DL goes all in this year. With all of our injures, we have $12.5MM in cap space at the trade deadline. With DL's contract coming up, and some reports that he may be replaced, I think he acquires several rentals for one last hurrah. I predict that he is going to get a backup goalie, two wingers, and possibly a 7th defenseman since LaDue is injured and Gilbert is gone.

Rick Nash(25 % retained) for Amadio and Martinez

Not that interested in Nash because of potential cap issues, but Amadio is the prospect I would least want to trade. Well LaDue probably the least but the Kings have made it clear he's off limits.

Not interested at all in seeing Dean repeat the mistakes made by Dave Taylor in his last year as GM of the Kings.

Dean has nothing to prove. He has won two cups with the Kings. He needs to recognize this core group is not capable of delivering another cup. The bloated cap hits of the contracts no GM wants in a trade make it impossible to get the kind of depth necessary to compete at the highest level.

Trotz said he wants Gilbert to be immersed in their system before they bring him up, so hes in the AHL for now. cant imagine he wont be on the NHL squad come playoff time

God I miss that back end. The 2012 and 2014 defense corps were such well-oiled machines.

Patience will increase our odds in recreating a solid playoff winning D corps. This piece in "The Fourth Period" shows why.
HOF Potvins take on Brent Burns is enlightening. Especially for those of us looking for mistake free play from young players.

Take a minute and compare the "games played" parameter he describes to our current prospects and their NHL games played.
Hell, just compare a prospects hours played since pee wee to the so-called 10,000 hours of skill mastery.
We're not really in a terrible place for D prospects or do we suffer from a lack of quality.*
Probably just early on the maturation curve.

*note: this does not imply all prospects will become All-Stars or HOFers

Gilbert would have to appear in 50% of their playoff games and the Caps have to reach the Conference Finals. One or both of those stipulations will not be met.

I don't see LA as buyers this trade dealine. I think DL and Sutter both know that the current roster isn't strong enough even with Quick in net. Maybe they bring in 1 or 2 vets, but I'm not sold on that line of thinking.

I think this Summer is when the roster gets shaken up.

That's one thing I've noticed about our D (even our forward corps.), there's not a lot of veteran leadership there. Greene would be considered a vet, but his days are probably done in the NHL. Its now up to Doughty, Muzzin, and Martinez to help foster the younger guys coming up, a responsibility none of them are used to. Thankfully Forbort, Gravel, and LaDue all look up to the task, they're playing pretty well considering how tough this league can be for rookie Dmen. Forbort has been especially impressive, which makes me worried we'll lose him (instead of McNabb) in the expansion draft.

Despite the league coveting defensemen with skill, speed, and puck moving skills, I still think it is essential to have one or two Greene/Regher types on a team. As things are, our defense is full of puck movers and without a defenseman that can pin the opposing forward against the boards and bring that physical edge.

As much criticism Greene has received lately, I think our defense was better with him in the lineup than without. If we can get a Greene type of defenseman at the deadline, it will be really helpful.

No chance Forbort is exposed IMO.

Kingsfan, is posting sarcastically about how certain folks like myself, think it's a bad idea to give 28/29 or 30+ year old players seven/eight year deals.

Not actually serious about what he is posting.

I was sort of serious. There's some ambiguous and tough to find line between cutthroat and all in the family. Once Quick was signed to a 10 year contract, that pretty much sealed the fate for Brown, Kopitar, and even Gaborik after he was a key cog in 2014. Then with Richards, Lombardi was like Flounder letting the guys borrow the car in Animal House.

Modin and Halpern 2.0. Modin did end up being pretty good in the playoffs though.

Get whatever you can for some of the dead weight like King and Clifford. If you can land a promising young forward for a defenseman then you have to do it.

to dertoit: Martinez + Shore + Watson

to LA: Nyquist + Sheahan

saw this one on a detroit forum. not terrible value wise IMO. they cited martinez being from the area, playing both sides and brings cup experience with two young guys would be good for full rebuild if they are going to lose leadership in offsason.

i guess sheahan hasn't scored a goal yet this year... might be the bizzaro player to come to LA and explode. don't know if nyquist is big enough... but he is crafty and contract is reasonable.

I'd rather have Tatar over Nyquist, But I'd be ok with the trade.

Yes, but GM's don't really act that way even if they believe it. As long as there is a chance they will try to find something to buy. With the Kings we really don't know what the tipping point might be to get the team really competitive. Who thought that acquiring that big lazy Carter in 2012 would instantly turn a wretchedly under-performing team into an unstoppable powerhouse?

I can definitely see DL trying to upgrade at 3rd line center. Or, swapping a couple of LHD's for a RHD. Crazy call -- going after Zetterberg -- financial shenanigans and all to make that work. Most likely will be acquiring a depth RHD.

I don't see the kings doing anything big this time around.

Cap issues are next season, not this season. So that limits what players with term the team can get unless term goes out.

I don't think the kings are looking at rentals either so that leaves no big deals other than maybe king/nolan/clifford being traded just to get their cap hits off the books. I don't see king being re-signed due to the cap crunch. Any picks coming back is a bonus.

There is a chance king is back if the deals for Pearson and Toffoli come in at less than $9.5 million.
