I like it. I mean... if the Jays announced that they had DFA'd Bergen, I wouldn't be all that disappointed, so the cost of acquiring Ray was basically nothing.

Worst case, he keeps doing what he's done this year, he's not worth a roster spot, and you lost Bergen. Oh well.
Best case, he finds his command a bit and he's a good starter again.

I would be happy if he can gain enough control to be a good option as a lefty out of the pen. It's a worthwhile risk considering the cost.

I've liked how we've handled the deadline so far. Checked in on some bigger names, but ultimately going for low cost, low risk, high reward options.

Sets us up for a playoff appearance this year, but we retain our big assets for a big move in the off-season

The more I think about this deal, the more I love it. With our injuries it gives him ~3 starts as a tryout for a continued rotation spot & potential playoff spot. Not only that, it gives us the ability to re-sign him if he shows any change in control or if the team thinks they can help.

Not only did he basically cost nothing in Bergen, but we also got money back. Just a no-risk trade, and with how good he COULD be all upside.

Legit if we traded a non 40 man guy for a starter I wouldn't have been that shocked if Bergen was close to the top of the list for the guy to be DFA'd to make room. If you look at it like that it essentially was free. It's entirely possible Bergen wouldn't have survived any acquisition, whether he was in the trade or not.

The Jays acquiring both Walker and Ray are significant if it means we are getting both Shoemaker and Pearson back at some point. If I were them when we get injured back my rotation would be Ryu, Walker, Roark, Shoemaker and Anderson. Put Pearson and Ray in bullpen throwing the heat before Giles (when back) and Bass. Lethal bullpen and Ray gives us a power lefty in pen.

The Jays should target a quality bat either in outfield or that can play 3rd base base.

TelleZ and Vollengbach become bench pieces rotating Hernandez, Gritcek, Gurriel, Shaw in OF/3rd and DH along with new acquired bat. A bench of Panik, TelleZ, Vollengback, Shaw and McGuire are solid.

Imagine going back a few years as an Arizona fan and being told your All-star pitcher who finished 7th in Cy young voting was just traded for a rule 5 return who may have had to have been DFA'd for any deadline acquisitions, and that Arizona would have to PAY to get that return?

Oy.....

Of all my years following the jays, the TDs have all been utter disappointments except for that crazy one. Im hoping for a fun finish but expecting the boring usual.

OPS and ERA when Jeff Mathis Catches:
Taijuan Walker:
.683 and 3.02 ERA
Robbie Ray: .509 and 2.86 ERA

Would be a good vet catcher to go after if the Jays are still talking to Texas.

Bass, Vogelbach and Walker from Seattle.

Walker, Ray and Caleb Joseph from Arizona.
