I still like what we ended up with ultimately from the Mikko trade, but it's lame to not make any other moves now. Not even a 4C since Jost is super meh. I guess they are keeping their powder dry for the offseason where they really could be positioned as movers and shakers, but something like adding Rakell (or choose whatever from the guys that did move) or whatever would have not really prevented moves in the summer.

Oh well, hopefully they'll rinse off the feeling of the last 6 weeks or whatever and at least make things interesting.

In think it's laughable guys wanting to make a cup splash and give up assets this year with fla Washington wpg being how they are. Let alone Colorado and now Dallas lol

Yeah, this is very similar to a few years back. Too many powerhouses to realistically compete, so you’re better off just making minor moves and hoping for a hot streak.

I still think this team could get to 2nd/3rd round. But not getting past the ECF. Also, Florida and Dallas are now heavy heavy favorites to make the Cup Finals -- how often have we seen the heavy heavy favorites on paper actually make it all the way? I bet both are bounced in round 1 or 2 this year.

If you can win 2 rounds, you can win it all. Just need to catch fire at the right time.

Montreal made it to the finals as a lousy 10 seed.

Exactly, especially in what was a re-tooling year anyway...and where outside of a hot start we've basically been hanging on to slightly over .500 record. We have a lot of assets to dangle at the draft for players with term, and plenty of cap space to snag something that shakes loose when another team is trying to overpay for a UFA (i.e. Marner). The FO took a huge swing on Mikko, hoping to get what we lost in Guentz...unfortunately he had no desire to be here when he was here or in the future, which was a huge miss/failure. But we did get some decent assets out of it vs losing him for nothing after probably disappointing us in the playoffs. Hell I still think our best playoffs was the first year we made it back, and that roster was significantly worse than what's been whimpering out of the playoffs the last few years because that team actually had some physicality and snarl. Ever since we can beat the non-physical teams (i.e. NJD) or hang with the physical teams that kinda suck (i.e. NYI), but eventually get our clock-cleaned when push comes to shove.

Washington doesn't scare me in the playoffs, despite the standings even as our roster is currently constructed I'd call a potential series a coin flip.

I think Tampa or Florida would eat our lunch in the ECF though as currently constructed. Make the right moves in this offseason that will very much not be the case, just don't think we can win the east with Orlov and Burns the way they've been playing.

That said I still would have made the moves on Rakell (if there was one) and Boesser (if we could get an extension) as those are the kind of guys we need to look at adding anyway. Guys that make us much harder to play against.

edit: honestly I think that's one of the reasons I was in favor of going to try to bring Geekie back as well, he plays that kind of drive the net game with some physicality.

Who the hell knows with any potential playoff matchup. We still have a lot of good components on this roster. At this point, I'd just settle for them feeling more like a cohesive team (even before Mikko that's been inconsistent all season). That'll at least give them a shot. It'd be nice to get back to no matter what the outcome, you knew the team was bringing it most nights. Perhaps only the playoffs will get them to that level this season. Maybe knowing all this shit is over now will help. We shall see.

I know he'll be in a much better position this offseason than last, but Tulsky and the rest need to plan on being very aggressive with trades and signings in the offseason. They are going to be as well set up as anybody for that. Don't be dumb but don't p***yfoot around either.
I want to believe it, but I just don't see us wheeling and dealing to bring in that high end talent we need. Just something about this front office makes me think that its just not in the cards. I mean hell, a competent front office doesn't make that trade for Rantanen to begin with without knowing he's at least willing to sign long term. And if Colorado isn't letting us talk to him beforehand, f*** it don't make that trade. I originally liked the deal because I thought we did the bare minimum due diligence to make sure we weren't wasting our time, but apparently I was giving our front office too much credit.

So now I have zero confidence in them this summer. I have confidence they'll throw money around and spend to the cap, but I really don't have confidence they'll do it in a way that pushes us closer to a Cup.

This team has thrown away an exceptional amount of talent for several years. NJ wouldn't even be a team without Cane castoffs. I get tired of listing them and people excuse them as cap casualties but a well run team would have had negotiations prior and been flipping some of them for lesser players with term. They seem very casual in certain areas and over the top micro in others. It's very confusing.
