Just saw the price Colorado paid for Nelson.

Nope, no thank you. I've changed my mind about loading up given our issues, I don't like our chances enough to pay a price like that.
Look at what Tampa Bay paid for Gourde TWO first rounders and a 2nd. Seattle is giddy to get that return even if it is a low First Round pick. That's a price you pay for a Crosby not a Gourde who I like btw.

This is why when people said "some team might put in an offer sheet for Marner or Nylander" I said please do so, I'd love the 4-5 1st Round picks, the currency alone for those picks would easily replace any player.

Look, Dubas "went all in" at least twice with this core and they have won a single round of hockey in a decade.

You could pick up three of the best forwards available and add a healthy young Bobby Orr and I still wouldn't pick this core to win a Cup.

Acceptance is the last stage of grief. If Leafs make the difficult but necessary choices in the offseason I might have hope again. Until then, I need to be more objective. This team was set on the course of failure the day Dubas so heavily overpaid for RFA years of multiple forwards. I said it time and again, those were the decisions I was most critical of him. The trades and decisions after I generally agreement with on balance.

Every single mediocre player the ask is a first + prospect.

Brad missed the boat on the big names. At this point I agree with standing pat

Bud I can confirm I got to watch the Leafs eliminate the Lightning not last year but the year before

Part of me is hoping for a Laughton & Risto package. I think that rounds out the team a lot, but very tough to pull off given the prices and cap.

You're gonna pay through the roof for both. But gotta pay to play.

Maybe Brad should have been less at the cottage this past summer?

So if this is not the "right time" when will it be? When you re-sign Marner and JT, what would be so different next year? I don't get the plan here? Why do you have all these guys here for and paying them through the nose?
If they go out in the 1st round, regardless of deadline acquisitions, and re-sign both of those guys...no one should waste their time on this team for the rest of the time the core is intact anyways. I know I won't.

You missed the best player in that trade…

But agreed on the notion that those overpay contracts really hemmed us in.

Yeah my brain went to "haven't" when I was thinking "have". I'm obviously aware of the one round win lol.

I've been doing that often lately (in addition to auto correct), grrr. Fixed it, thanks

We don't have the assets to do what those teams are doing. Thanks Dubas

Because we spent all of our assets to try and get over the top before, I'm mad because we can't spend all of those assets today to try and get over the top, and if we spent all of our assets today, and didn't win, I'd be mad in the future at that too.

I've wanted to trade Marner for years so no argument here. I have an extreme opinion and want to move on from both Marner and Tavares, and to not re-sign Matthews for any money once his second abomination of a contract expires. I want to move on from these guys, period. But I acknowledge that's an extreme opinion.

A few months ago I wanted to add at the deadline. With these prices, and the way we've played, I no longer want to.

I'd package a 1st + futures for Roy + Hague out of Vegas. They can turn around and use the assets for Marchand.

If only Hague were a RHD

The prices are astonishing. Glad we didn't pay for Nelson.

Pivot: get either Donato or Geekie to fill the center hole, should be cheaper than Laughton. Trade for Carlo.

Knies - Matthew - Marner
McMann - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Geekie/Donato - Jarnkrok
Lorentz - Kampf - Holmberg

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Carlo
OEL - Myers.

If we can upgrade in bottom six for cheap, I would be open to that too. But not at expense of 3C or RHD.
It feels so wrong but Boston has the pieces we need. Throw in Marchand for full measure.

Domi/Timmins/Dewar/Minten/Niemala/1st for the 3.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Marchand - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Geekie - Robertson
Lorentz - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Holmberg/Patches

McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Carlo
Benoit - OEL
Myers

I have the fear we are going to trade for Ristolainen and Laughton as a package for a stupid price. It wouldn't move the needle. This would still be a 2nd round team at max.

Let's see if Treliving panics. I pray he doesn't but I think he will.

Don't worry, how fast the Leafs lost to Florida, no one would blame you

That's not an extreme option at all, it's the most logical option and I agree with it.

These damn NMCs are making players lazy and uninspired since they don't have any incentive.

This is the best we are going to see of Marner and Tavares since they are playing for many millions, especially Marner. Therefore, their playoff performances with the incentive of staying on the table should guide the decision.

If they shine and Leafs make the Cup Finals, re-sign them. Anything short, walk away from both contracts and get ready to negotiate with 313 UFAs (minus these two obviously).

Doesn’t make sense to overpay just for the sake of making a trade.

Not a lot out there that moves the needle IMHO

And please don’t waste assets on old players or rentals.

Would be good to unload some contracts though….Domi …Kampf …etc.

They want WHAT? For Risto!?

Okay like, I know I was kind of saying that Tre and Shanny put us in the position where we need to go all in this year, but if we trade two firsts + for Laughton and Risto.... That's definitely not what I meant.

Damn. I know we were first in the division this week but....we might as well try and sell Domi, Jarnkrok and Kampf at this rate.

Tavares will not ever agree to a trade out of Toronto. Ever.
It’s very unlikely, as is Brad wanting to capitalize on the asset. If Brad were to approach him and offer him a real chance at a cup for 3 months I do think Tavares would take it. He’d look great with LAK.

If contract talks are close and Brad plans on re-signing him, Tavares can come back on the same contract in the summer anyway (which I hope doesn’t happen).

For 3 7ths? I don’t think anyone’s lining up to give up real assets for these players with term.
