Some info from Friedman:

-They want a 1st for Laughton (not as high as what Dreger is saying)
-Dallas are still working with Rantanan on a deal
-ROR is most likely going to stay in Nashville. That's his preference.
-B. Schenn's price is 2 big pieces (1st and a good prospect). That's a bit lower than what Dreger said.
-Chicago are trying to sign Donato

This makes me feel like he’s unfortunately forcing his way to Florida and has Carolina handcuffed.
I think he's overplaying his hand.

He didn't want to re-sign in Colorado. He didn't want to sign in Carolina. Now he doesn't want to extend in Dallas? Florida would not have endless cap room in the offseason to give him the money he wants, and they have an excellent GM that knows when he has leverage and they'd have ALL the leverage. If he's going to Florida they aren't going to overpay him in salary; for one they don't have the cap space, and two because they're arguably the best run team in the entire league.

It’s very unlikely, as is Brad wanting to capitalize on the asset. If Brad were to approach him and offer him a real chance at a cup for 3 months I do think Tavares would take it. He’d look great with LAK.

If contract talks are close and Brad plans on re-signing him, Tavares can come back on the same contract in the summer anyway (which I hope doesn’t happen).

For 3 7ths? I don’t think anyone’s lining up to give up real assets for these players with term.

A real chance at a cup and LAK? :help:

Laughton is not worth a first. Let someone else throw a 1st away for no reason.

Cowan + Minten/1st + Danford for Schenn at 4.5 m
or
1st/Minten for Laughton

I'd be fine with either of those deals.

I think the worst outcome is doing nothing though. Even Laughton + a depth RD would be a fine deadline.

I think if we look at the bigger picture, we know for sure this core is never winning a Cup. There's a very good argument to be made, it will never see a Conference Final.

Now, obviously MLSE is happy with the extra 7 playoff games every year, and seem adamant that they want to keep that going for as long as possible.

I think it's imperative, for us not to spend decades in the wilderness like previously, that going forward, every deadline, we keep our 1st round pick and top prospects.

Once we ride out this core, we'll be in a much better position to re-tool on the fly, and maintain a modicum of relevancy.

We have to continue to draft well, like Cowan and Danford, and just ride out this period of the timeline.

Yup. This is where I'm at.

I originally wanted to add at the deadline given our goaltending, but I can't shake the playoff embarrassments year after year after year...due in large part to a lack of production from the core forwards which are very handsomely paid. When it happens this much for this long, it's a feature, not a bug.

I'm tired of this core. I'm just tired of it. There's a nonzero possibility they prove me wrong, and I hope they do, but I sure wouldn't bet on it.

All these prices are a joke.

Don't address the real issue. Players that are massive liabilities with the puck or in defending on the ice.

Why bother. The team can't even figure out that when Matthews plays with MM his balls shrink to the size of peanuts and he waits for a pass.

They also can't figure out or even call out in the media that Rielly is so defensively inept that he could single handedly lose you a series and the same goes Domi and there are more.

Selling the farm for a fake shot at the cup is dumb. Unload the deadwood.

I’m glad you aren’t the GM. 3 1st for Schenn who will be a 3C.
Crazy.
Laughton ain’t worth a first either.

You're gonna play through the roof for both. But gotta pay to play.

Maybe Brad should have been less at the cottage this past summer?

Makes sense that the price is even higher now, the market has been set. But it all depends on the roster player and prospect. I have no problem sending Conor Timmins the other way. Or Max Domi.

But yeah, price and cap will be very difficult to navigate. Hopefully Brad has other options lined up.

They’re good this year and they have a cup winner in net who’s actually playing well. A 2C would round out that team very well.

If Nelson can fetch Ritchie+1st, I’d be content with Greentree for Tavares.
You think LAK can beat Oliers or Vegas in the first round, then Oliers and Vegas in the second round?

I guess not impossible, but for a real chance, it'd be Florida, Tampa, Vegas, Edmonton, Colorado, Dallas. Maybe he wants to be reunited with Nelson in Colorado

Key piece today is Olesiak .. or someone like him to make our net a very unfriendly place in playoffs .. comletely clear to Tre without Tanev our D is not even down da stretch ready nevermind playoff ready .. Rielly Myers and Timmins are not gonna cut it against Florida .. we likely need 2 more D for playoff hockey .. need to give Stolly some support

Bottom line is a contender has reliable players that don't make errors under pressure. VGK decimated us as many players buckled under pressure.

They should watch that game over and over and take a lot of notes.
Look at the Leafs roster. They have 11 or 12 players that are 4th liner F or bottom pairing 6-8 D at best, and their superstars have shown us they don’t have all the skills needed to play tight checking hockey. so expecting them to do things their incapable of is not fair to them.

I agree. Tre can make a small deal to pacify the anxious we gotta buy to win crowd but only if it's sensible.

The cap distribution is and has been the problem for a long time.

I can see LA beating the Oilers, not so sure about VGK.

I don't see any of the other teams making sense for him. Really only Winnipeg and LA and I could see him being enticed to waive for 3 months in LA - especially since they were on his short list when he signed in Toronto.
