I was ok giving up Minten and some roster players but not a 1st rd pick. Tre failed on this transaction IMHO but hopefully it proves me wrong.

The part that is missing here is that these guys aren’t rentals. They come with term, and Carlo is on a team friendly deal.

If Tre has shown us anything since getting here, it’s that he picks good players. OEL, Stolarz, Tanev, etc. have all been solid adds. He knew exactly what the team needed and got it. Carlo is a shutdown guy. And he is going to be learning from one of the best in Tanev.

I think Carlo is a good add. Hurts a bit with Minten but we're in win now mode.

That's a pretty good d corps with Tanev back soon.

Will see how Laughton does. We're definitely better now. Was it worth the cost... it'll be a long time before we really know.

A lot of cap space in the next few years to make trades and add different pieces later on.

Hopefully they win the division. That'd be huge.

Pretty sure anyone who is complaining about Marchand this year hasn't checked the individual stats in a while:

His production is half of his career average. Part of the reason Boston sucks so bad is because it appears Father Time has caught up with him.

McMann - Laughton - Domi
Lorentz - Kampf - Jarnkrok
 
Laughton and Carlo are good adds, but this team has struggled to score in the playoffs and just dropped two 1sts and two prospects on depth and defense. That said, at the end of the day if the core doesn't up it doesn't matter.

Potentially makes more sense long-term, if there's significant retention on Carlo that gives us a lot of flexibility in the next two offseasons with an exploding cap.

Edit: To inject a bit of positivity, people were pretty excited at the potential of Luke Schenn return. Carlo is a signifciantly better player than Schenn and with potential retention is on a steller contract for two more years. Could be an elite match with Rielly without having to play the toughest assignments. We paid a lot but that 1st and Minten weren't going to be suiting up in April.

1st rounders might hurt but those are not top 3 picks, most likely early 20s.
Minten is one of our top prospects, that’s true.
However is he one bc he is really good or bc we lacks good prospects.
Bc if Minten comes up with the Leafs at the same time where AM did. He might be 8th or 9th on the list. As we had AM, MM, Willie, Hyman, Brown, Kap, AJ, Moore, Leivo, Gundy, Kral, Lilly, Brooks….

Pacioretty presumably is out for the rest of the regular season. Someone else will likely magically end up on LTIR.

Total speculation. In 26 games with the Marlies he’s got 6 goals, 7 assists and is a -13. He’s likely a bottom six centre who won’t score much.

Don't like Robertson on the 4th line but he deserves to play IMO.

Same with Laughton we are banking on him being a 45-50 pt 3C who can show more offensive skill and poise in a more offensive setting with better teammates.

At the end of the day Id have dealt Knies + for Rantanen but he didmt really consider us an option by the looks of it

If we did nothing the team would catch a lot of flak.

We took some calculated gambles and we will see how things playout.

I'm not a huge fan of Laughton but I don't think they're banking on him being a 50 point player. I think he just needs to be better than Domi who has had a bad year and is miscast. This also has the potential to spark both Domi and Robertson while our 4th line looks much stronger (though expensive) with Kampf, Jarnkrok, and Holmberg. It effectively bumped them all down. He's definitely not a sexy name but he compliments the roster very well and slides multiple guys into the right position.

As for Carlo, his number one job is to be Luke Schenn for Riley. Definitely a bit risky but he's younger and better than Schenn.

I'm mildly disappointed with what they gave up but I'm happy about the term both players have. I wouldn't be surprised if they re-sign Marner and grab Bennett if he goes to free agency.

With one of our top prospects and two 1st round picks gone. I was expecting more. And if the price is steep because its TDL day .....then shame on Tre......use those assets earlier or stand pat but to waste assets like he has today is not exciting to me. Both players IMHO are not needle movers and are depth players. We have less offence from our back end now and we will still have a hard time scoring.

Still gotta go for it. They chose to keep all the players for a shot. If they show the same level of inability to perform when we need them, then it's up to management to finally make the changes needed.

Why would he go back to a rebuild? If Florida offers him anything decent, he’ll probably sign there or for another contender.
