So the details aren't in yet, but basically we're going into the playoffs with a core that hasn't proven it can get it done, with no picks for the next three drafts and the possibility of losing our 2C and star 1RW for nothing this offseason.

All in all, if you told me the Leafs were dangling 2 firsts and Minten at the deadline, I would have expected more than Laughton and Carlo. Maybe I'm underestimating Carlo.

Both have an extra year on them.

If we got pure UFA we’d have to redo these trades again next year and spend double.

Leafs now have their goaltending and defense locked in for next season. They'll have 25M of cap space to replace Marner, Tavares, and re-sign Knies however they do that.

I think you're underestimating the term and the retention. Imagine if we dangled Laughton in the offseason at 1.5M? We'd easily get that value back if we wanted.

I think you are underestimating what dropping Carlo into this lineup does for the rest of the defense. It is a major addition.

Rantanen stock has fallen since the initial trade.

A scoring winger who all of a sudden doesn't score and isn't great defensively the minute he's not paired with the league MVP would make me a bit worried.

Maybe Dallas is the right fit for him though.

Personally, I would take the Leafs deals over Rantanen bc it fills the needs of the Leafs plus options going forward.

Love that both players got terms and Leafs can resign Laughton if they want to within the next year.

IMHO giving up Minten and a 1st rd pick is overpayment for a defenceman that has size but offers no offence. So many are enamoured with size on the backend but we need some offence from that position.

But thats Berube style.....big defenceman with no offence ability and then we will wonder why we cant score in playoffs.

I was ok giving up Minten and some roster players but not a 1st rd pick. Tre failed on this transaction IMHO but hopefully it proves me wrong.
