To day players are valued 3 ways, present skills, age and potential, and contract status.
Actually guys like AM are valued greater last contract than now. Knies will be a huge asset over the next 5 years, assuming we pay him reasonably.

Dealing first round picks is a given when you are trying to contend - and to be honest, we've had a bottom 5 prospect pool in the NHL the last few season, yet we managed to grab a 3C and a TOP4 defensive D-man, both with retention and term (Carlo remains to be seen), with a couple of them + picks.

If you want to win, you pay the price. Toronto is now a deep team and all we can do is hope, that it is enough.

Agree with your lines but that defence is just not good enough and not a contender core.

OEL playing at 80% capacity because he is not RHD. He also impacts the quality of play by Rielly.

Timmins doesn’t help my in a contender Top 6.

Same story every year. Failure to build our RHD strength with a true RHD to get the most out of Rielly and avoid forcing a LHD from playing their wrong side.

So pitiful, really. How can you fail over and over at this, when other teams have an embarrassment of RHD?

Would you rather have Rantanen at 9.5mil and 12mil for 8 yrs or Laughton and Carlo plus a 7-8mil player like Boser or Bennett for the next 8 yrs?

Rantanen stock has fallen since the initial trade.

A scoring winger who all of a sudden doesn't score and isn't great defensively the minute he's not paired with the league MVP would make me a bit worried.

Maybe Dallas is the right fit for him though.

A bottom 6 forward and a 4/5 D is less than ideal

If Carlo doesnt bounce back to being a #3D who can play a soild game and make quick reads to move puck cleanly while being mobile enough to not cost you very often (2019 to 2022ish version of him) we are screwed

Same with Laughton we are banking on him being a 45-50 pt 3C who can show more offensive skill and poise in a more offensive setting with better teammates.

At the end of the day Id have dealt Knies + for Rantanen but he didmt really consider us an option by the looks of it

If we did nothing the team would catch a lot of flak.

We took some calculated gambles and we will see how things playout.

Carlo is a much younger and better version of Schenn, and we need guys like that. It will probably take some time for him to acclimate here, but make no mistake, it’s a big upgrade from Conor Timmims. We don’t need offense from him.

Minten? Good prospect, who has suspect offense. I’m not sure what we’re so concerned about here. Our window is the next 3-4 years!

The firsts are only thing that matter there IF Laughton sucks and Carlo sucks

Minten now that we can be honest is a nothing prospect who cant produce at any level of hockey he plays at.

The 1sts suck if these guys suck for us and cant push us forward to deep runs.

If these guys don't work out for us we can flip them in the offseason for what would likely be exactly what we paid. It's an unbelievable deadline in my books. I am 100% opposed to 3 month rentals due to it being terrible asset management so this is a huge win because we didn't pay more than rental prices.

Appears to be so. Long term retention on Carlo would be amazing. Solidify out 3C and a top 4 D spot all for under 4 million for multiple runs would be incredible.

they got guys that addressed needs, fit age wise , with term and didn't give up their top asset. good day other then how much better Panthers, Stars, Jets got but excited otherwise

IMHO giving up Minten and a 1st rd pick is overpayment for a defenceman that has size but offers no offence. So many are enamoured with size on the backend but we need some offence from that position.

But thats Berube style.....big defenceman with no offence ability and then we will wonder why we cant score in playoffs.

I was ok giving up Minten and some roster players but not a 1st rd pick. Tre failed on this transaction IMHO but hopefully it proves me wrong.

If Carlo can play top-4 RD minutes and is retained, then it's probably not bad. They are both good fits. We'll see where the dust settles.

The Carlo price was very fair. Didn't love the Laughton price tag as much.
