Trade Centre just out there trying to find something to talk about now.... Rickard Rakell... "He can play Center, he can play wing"... say what.. this guy hasn't taken more than 100 faceoffs in nearly a decade.

Shanahan’s a dead man walking. Not way Pelley lets him make desperation trades to try and save his job.
I mean, you should be right. But Shanahan should already be gone, he should have been jettisoned along with Kyle Dubas or before. So who knows what this team does since they are a corporate backasswards franchise.

Sounds like Rants is going to get taught a lesson on his contract asks.

We can only hope that Mitchy is watching Rants getting doors slammed in his face and asks a reasonable number.

……. And if he doesn’t, Treliving slams the door in his face too.

The guy who paid Matthews and Nylander those contracts? Not going to happen. You can't compare this team to the ones that are run well.

This isn't just a reflection of this season, it's a reflection of his entire tenure as a Leafs GM as well as the latter half of his tenure as Flames GM

He hasn't made a single deal of significance in Toronto and it's been almost 2 years. I don't know how that is even possible
Oh that's easy, the cupboards are bare.

Dubas went for it every year as he believed in this core. I agreed that he should have gone for it each time, but it was always going to lead to lean years.

This is why this team must not overpay and instead walk away from Marner and JT in the offseason unless they make it to the Finals and then retool with different players. It's long overdue.

Brad made important pick ups in the offseason when he grabbed Stolarz and Tanev. Pick up players without giving up assets and then you have those assets at the point the team is complete and deep so you can make a REAL playoff run with proven winners.

Same thing every year. I don’t get the excitement, such a non event.

my guess is they have something lined up and just need reeves to clear

Brayden to Pitt , , then Schenn brothers to Leafs to maximize retention for Cowan + salaries and conditional pick

Fair, but for what it’s worth, imagine how many more wins we would have if Matthews was having a healthy season and has ~20 more goals right now

Ok maybe that’s an unfair comparison, let’s just focus on the defensive side of things since our main upgrades are the elite shutdown D, the elite defensive coach, and the elite goaltending. 22-23 we had 222 goals against good for for 5th overall with Samsonov in net, no shutdown D, and no elite defensive coach. Right now we’re at 180 with 20 games left, so as long as we average 2 GAA the rest of the year I like our odds at tying that team.

Personally I don’t think Colorado is good enough this year, that’s just me, that’s why I’m loling. Are they better than Vegas or Dallas, no imo. It’s hard cause I think as a COL fan I respect restructuring the roster to go for it, but I think if we move Rantanen I would have just preferred a straight up retool like they did the last time and bring in the influx of youth that helped you win, again. I’m not sure Brock Nelson really moves the needle. Maybe they have one more move in the chamber.

The prices this trade deadline have been absurd. I saw someone make a reference to Martin Erat for Filip Forsberg when it comes to the Nelson trade and I see that exact same thing.
Avs have as good of a chance as any. The pedigree is there, their underlying numbers are great and they have the best player on the planet this season plus arguably the best dman, and they shored up the goaltending too. Lehkonen is having a career year, Necas has fit right in, Nuke is back and hasn't missed a beat, Drouin is PPG, and now they've added Nelson to bump down Mittelstadt who should do well in 3C matchups. I'll concede the defense isn't quite as deep as 2022, but Toews-Makar are still elite.

I find that hard to believe when teams like Tampa have been buying since like 2018, Florida since 2020, Vegas since their inception etc.

Teams find ways to get players. It requires creativity, which our front office has lacked

If we had 69-goal Matthews I'd be more encouraged to go for it given that Marner and Tavares are UFA and we finally have legit goaltending.

But there are an awful lot of question marks right now. There's no right answer IMO, it just depends on how much you believe...and that's a matter of opinion.

It’s the final year of his contract and he’s hasn’t been given an extension so the writing is on the wall but you’re right it’s MLSE and they often talk the talk but don’t change anything.

12 million for Rantanen is "well short"??? With the cap going way up the next few years salaries are going to go bonkers. Domi's gonna be asking for 7x7 his next contract

I have no qualms about dropping him but if I'm keeping one and moving the other, it's timmins out for me

Benoit provides physicality that Timmins lacks.
By every statistical measurement otherwise, Timmins is better, and it's not very close.
We need OEL on the left side, and bring in a RHD to move everyone back to where they belong.

It's not just stats like this, but actual results in GF/GA while on the ice. Benoit was good last year, he has been bad this year.

McCabe Tanev

OEL Timmins

Certain posters said O'Reilly didn't want to re-sign because of the Toronto media, I tend to believe he saw this teams leadership group and sad work habits up close and said "nah these guys are soft, won't ever win a thing".

Fan fiction... if he did that and then signed with Nashville he is the dumbest player in the league.

I'm going to guess there are people in hockey who think that if the dude's dad wasn't a Billionaire, he likely wouldn't have a job in hockey, particularly as high as GM.

I mean, he got the Leafs gig based on his family knowing the Tanenbaums

Whether he cares or not is up to him. But frankly, he's a mediocre manager on a good day.
Still a upgrade to Boy Wonder imo…….

Are we sure that Trump with his tariffs and the rest of his nonsense isn't going to tank the economy, and therefore have a "covid effect" on the salary cap as well?

It's a buyer's market—look at the price it took for Brock Nelson.

For Schenn, if we were to get him at $4.5M, that's $8 million retained over four years.

Broken down:

A first-round pick for $8 million in retention on Schenn.

And then Cowan + Danford for Schenn.

I just feel that would be the cost given some of the other deals. If people want to cry about the prices, they shouldn't complain when Tre stands pat.
Giving up all that for maybe 40 goals over three years on an old slow team doesn’t seem to make sense.
