It's a brutal environment where you have 20 microphones in your face every day, where when you go on a slump you are persecuted, when you are not being persecuted, media is trying to be greasy and get you to say shit about your teammates, they are calling your family trying to get inside info on you, you leave your house you got fans harassing you for signatures and selfies. You go to a place like Nashville and not a dang person cares who you are, you live life, go to dinner without be harassed, you might get a couple of beat reporters asking you questions, rarely. I dont think it is so much as it is the team as it is the shit environment that comes with playing in a big hockey market..
That does suck and all, but a) you're paid premier dollars to win b) win something for once to shut the media up. That's what the Brink's truck is for.

Paying superstars is okay.

It's not like Tre is any different, what did he give Matthews and Nylander again?
I must have missed when I defended Treliving? He sucks too.

If you're actually defending the contracts given out to our core forwards you and I have absolutely nothing to discuss and I'll move on.
NHL players are physically tough but mentally soft
I'm not saying yes but I'm not saying no.

Treliving might look at this group and decide the sunk cost might not be worth it. He’s in Year 2 of his era, not the fin de siècle of the Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander era. I don’t necessarily think that’s a loser mentality. Maybe he looks at this group and doesn’t like what he sees?
Tre has almost no time remaining and Shanahan has less. They will do something. A center with term and a RD man. No centers with term have moved. Desharnais and Schenn do not make them better and they couldn't accommodate Jones who is a massive gamble. The only thing I see they could have done so far that was a safe improvement was Nelson and costs aside, no term.

L Schenn, R Strome and Laughton. I don't like any of them much but those are who they may actually be looking at. And ROR of course until it was confirmed that he said a club with Holl, Brodie and Kerfoot would never win anything:laugh:

Stand pat. Get eliminated first round. Let Shanny Treliving and Berube go.
That’s best case scenario now.
Let Shanny, Marner and Tavares go. He signed them to those ridiculous contracts and kept running it back when they should have broke up the band after losing to Columbus and Montreal in the playoffs. And neither player shows up come playoff time so they can use that $22M to build an actual team not a studs and duds approach that never gets it done.

These prices are outrageous and there’s no real difference maker on the market anymore. Schenn would be an albatross and Laughton ain’t good enough to be worth a 1st plus.

I hope we can at least get a depth right-shot defenseman so we can separate Rielly and OEL. Doesn’t seem likely though.
I think Brayden Schenn would instantly become a fan favourite here. Bigger than ROR was.

As the buyers buy the price will come down. There are only so many first to go around.

I prefer getting your target than waiting for what’s left, but there’s a good chance that the deals made closer to the deadline will be more reasonable.

What do you mean Tre has almost no time remaining?

I'm fine with paying somebody 3.75m if they can play with a star. Being able to play with a star player is kind of an undervalued skill. Hyman, Bunting did it well. You also need your 13m forward to be able to carry lesser linemates.

However! The thing about giving a contract to a player that solely does well with a star, as we are seeing now. If you take them away the contract becomes ass.

NHL players are physically tough but mentally soft. It's probably the only sport in the world where most of the athletes already come from well off families. so that probably doesn't help
Domi is our #3C at 3.75 and people bitch about his contract, yet want to bring in Schenn at 6.5 to play the same #3C who has 3 years left on his deal, who is producing around the same pace as Domi last season (not good) ...his salary is on par with the rumored JT resigning price, at near the same age, BUT 1/2 the production, and people dont want to resign JT.

this is insanity

Personally, I'd deal Domi in a sellers market and just call up Minten, or even slot Holmberg in at 3C (Jarn would need to be on the 3rd line to make this feasible though) Or, sell him too!!

Every time I think of Brayden Schenn I can picture Brian Burke shaking his head at the draft when the Kings took him. I can picture it like it was yesterday. Does this happen to anyone else?
I bet the only point at issue is how much retention the Leafs can get on him, both from St. Louis and from a third team.

I really hope they actually do this. Take advantage of the market. Deal Kampf, Domi, and Jarnkrok.

How about Mitch Marner to LA in a Blockbuster??

IF Leafs are not going to re-sign Marner why are the Leafs not trying to pull a Rantanen and bring in a bunch of future assets?

LA is looking for a needle moving winger and have a bunch of young talent to pull off a deal.

Kings Shopping Brandt Clarke

March 7, 2025 at 9:18 am CDT

The Kings are shopping 2021 No. 8 overall pick Brandt Clarke as they search for a needle-moving upgrade on the wing ahead of the deadline, per Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.

Clarke, 22, has yet to receive a legitimate run at top-four minutes on the Los Angeles blue line. This is really the defender’s first full-time NHL season in earnest, only appearing in nine games in 2022-23 and 16 in 2023-24. He had a golden opportunity to prove he could play higher up in the lineup when fellow righty Drew Doughty started the year on injured reserve following ankle surgery, but even then, he rarely received top-four deployment. He’s only played north of 20 minutes in a game eight times this season, all coming in October and November.

Nonetheless, the 6’2″ righty trudged on with great results in his limited usage. He leads the Kings’ blue line in scoring with 4-21–25 through 56 games, with a good chunk of that production coming at even strength

A very good team, but not notably better

This is where we strongly disagree. I think we are substantially better. The Leafs have gone to several Game 7’s despite Samsonov and others giving away games. This year, we have a legit #1 goalie in Stolarz/Woll, we have a #1 shutdown RD in Tanev which we haven’t had. OEL is a legit #4 D that we haven’t had, and Berube is a far better coach than Keefe. Knies is pacing 30 goals as a power forward, that’s an huge plus and Marner has a lot more confidence. These are things we haven’t had in prior years. Matthews is the one guy having a down year, but you don’t know he won’t be right for the playoffs. He’s still pacing better than a point per game. If we add another 3C on top of what Tre has already done, I think we are simply better than Tampa. Florida and Toronto might be two of the best four teams in the league, so not adding at this deadline is just a flat-out mistake. I think you are holding on to the mistakes of past years too much. This team is clearly better than last year by a good bit and better built for the playoffs too.
