The thing that's annoying is... part of Domi's value was what he did with Matthews towards the end of the year... we sign him and don't play him with Matthews............

They tried it a few games, but that was after having completely destroyed his confidence putting him in other roles that didn't work all season and not even considering re-uniting them

Gotta keep trying. The solution is to blow it up or keep trying. They clearly chose their path by not doing anything in the summer.

The loser mentality of we're not good enough, so might as well just sit on our hands... yeah that's a great strategy.

Treliving might look at this group and decide the sunk cost might not be worth it. He’s in Year 2 of his era, not the fin de siècle of the Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander era. I don’t necessarily think that’s a loser mentality. Maybe he looks at this group and doesn’t like what he sees?

Not to make this a Tre vs Dubas thing, but Treliving is absolutely sleeping in the bed he made.

Leafs are capped out because of the bad contracts he gave out. 10 million on just Kampf, Reaves, Beniot, Domi and Dewar.

You never saw that from Kyle with the players outside of the core.
Oh is that all? He only overpaid the core, that's all! Just the core!

Yep!

I truly believe a Knies - Matthews - Domi line could work. Which would allow us to move Marner/Nylander up and down the line up to hunt match ups, but I don't get paid the big bucks

Colorado could trade Rantanen
Florida could trade Weegar, Huberdeau
Tampa could trade Sergachev, McDonagh

yet we don't trade any of the big 4 while making out of the 1st round once and apparently Knies is also part of untouchables when we are clearly weak on defense :help:

Did any of those players have full NMC in their contracts?

The players hold the cards when a NMC is in their contract. You cant force Marner or JT to waive it.

So how would you trade them? Just curious

You're not the only one. I like that line too. But if this is the Matthews we're getting it won't matter anyways.

Maple Leafs gets rejected by one of their top targets and former player!

Toronto now has to shift plans with hours left to make a move… Full story down below:

The Toronto Maple Leafs might have targeted Ryan O’Reilly from Nashville with hours left on deadline day, but according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the veteran forward has rejected the idea.

“Even though he doesn’t have a no-move clause, the Predators are treating it like he does. They won’t trade him unless it’s a big offer and unless he agrees to it. I think Toronto looked into O’Reilly and I think they were told he didn’t have an interest in that reunion.”
I said it at the time he left, he KNOWS that this team has a bunch of soft players who will never win a Cup.

Once you win a Cup you know what it takes, what kind of team. Notice that few Cup winners want to come here and few trade pickups ever re-sign?

This team has a clubhouse atmosphere and it is due to bad parenting by MLSE who nurtured this environment. Leaf fans are the biggest suckers so take my advice and just sit back and enjoy, but don't have any expectations. That way you can only be pleasantly surprised.

To be fair Dubas didn't leave leave Tre with a lot of assets to trade. With Tavares and Marner possibly gone next year, Tre has to be super conservative with who he trades away. There is a scenario next year where Tavares, Marner, Meiten and Cowan are all gone and we didn't go that far in this years playoffs.... not sure I really want Tre to be aggressive at the TDL this year.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews shares the sentiment of the fanbase in hoping management adds at the trade deadline.

With less than 48 hours to go from the time of filing until the 3 p.m. deadline, calls for GM Brad Treliving to make his move grow louder with each passing day. Especially given the two teams chasing them in the
Atlantic, the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, are making moves to bolster their respective lineups.
Speaking with reporters after the morning skate on Wednesday, Matthews said he is putting his faith in management to help them keep up with their division rivals.

“You look at our division in particular, it’s obviously very tight,” he said. “Management’s going to do the best they can. All we can do is trust in them.”

If he doesn't like what he sees with the group then he should have made changes.

We shouldn't hire a GM who needs two years to evaluate players, especially when his job before the current job was evaluating players in the NHL...

Yes, this is why he signed with Nashville because he badly wants to win

By shot metrics at least he was great beside AM and Jarnkrok both. He can't produce at C. The true value of Schenn will be that Max won't be back there.

Let's be honest, they're both at fault.

Cowan, Minten, Danford a 2nd and 3rd this year a 1st and 3rd next year.

The team has assets to make a deal if it wants to

If those random pieces came close to a Rantanen package and Rantanen wanted to sign in Toronto I would do it as a first step towards a bigger retool with the bonus of an all hands on deck playoff attempt. Otherwise the overpay doesn’t feel like it’s worth it because you can bet bottom dollar we are out in the second round we’ll want to sell what futures we don’t have and “gotta win during the Matthews era.”

Ask them to waive or a list of teams they are willing to waive to . But Knies doesn't have no move.

I guess if the team has as many issues as we talk about in a gdt then it's probably best they don't get in an arms race with teams who have already won (Tampa, Florida, Vegas, Colorado) or teams are have made it far (Dallas) and keep to the sidelines.

I guess for me is the frustration is that Tre is terrified to take any risk or make an upgrade. I've said for years now, the Leafs should operate like the Yankees but they act like the Marlins. Always reactionary. Always scared.
Every top free agent considers signing with the Yankees. The NHL equivalent is Florida, Tampa, Dallas and Vegas. The Leafs may not be the equivalent of the Marlins but most free agents or players with no trade protection don’t want to play in the Toronto spotlight unless they’re a local guy in the backend of their career.

Assets are not just 1st round picks... many were left.

I agree he has to be careful, but he is the one that put himself in this situation where people might walk.
