To be fair Dubas didn't leave leave Tre with a lot of assets to trade. With Tavares and Marner possibly gone next year, Tre has to be super conservative with who he trades away. There is a scenario next year where Tavares, Marner, Meiten and Cowan are all gone and we didn't go that far in this years playoffs.... not sure I really want Tre to be aggressive at the TDL this year.
But we could've had Brock Nelson for 27 games instead.

I'd be open to addition by subtraction in a Sellers Market
Based on the returns Domi and Kampf could pull in a boatload, and I'd deal them both (at least a 1st for Domi)
and then we can call up Minten, who is better then Domi anyways.

move Robertson/McMann up to the 2nd line and run
Jarn - Minten - Robertson/McMann
Patch - Holmberg - Lorentz
I'd rather see this bottom 6
and use the assets to try to grab a RHD

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews shares the sentiment of the fanbase in hoping management adds at the trade deadline.

With less than 48 hours to go from the time of filing until the 3 p.m. deadline, calls for GM Brad Treliving to make his move grow louder with each passing day. Especially given the two teams chasing them in the
Atlantic, the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, are making moves to bolster their respective lineups.
Speaking with reporters after the morning skate on Wednesday, Matthews said he is putting his faith in management to help them keep up with their division rivals.

“You look at our division in particular, it’s obviously very tight,” he said. “Management’s going to do the best they can. All we can do is trust in them.”

You know what would make adding easier? Having cap space and not having to have paid so many assets for rentals we couldn't afford to keep because underperforming players took all the cap...

If he doesn't like what he sees with the group then he should have made changes.

We shouldn't hire a GM who needs two years to evaluate players, especially when his job before the current job was evaluating players in the NHL...

Maybe they decided to give it to the end of the Marner Tavares contracts, who can really know?

You know what would be nice Auston, trading 65% Matthews for 100% Matthews at the deadline.

This team is built to rely on the core. Unfortunately, we decided to not trade either Marner and/or Nylander when we could have. We have decided that the answer is in the core 4.

This is the problem. It hasn't worked. Not even close. If we can't off load Marner or ask Matthews, Nylander, Tavares to waive their NTC to retool, may as well go all in and accelerate our time to the next rebuild.

I said it at the time he left, he KNOWS that this team has a bunch of soft players who will never win a Cup.

Once you win a Cup you know what it takes, what kind of team. Notice that few Cup winners want to come here and few trade pickups ever re-sign?

This team has a clubhouse atmosphere and it is due to bad parenting by MLSE who nurtured this environment. Leaf fans are the biggest suckers so take my advice and just sit back and enjoy, but don't have any expectations. That way you can only be pleasantly surprised.

It's a brutal environment where you have 20 microphones in your face every day, where when you go on a slump you are persecuted, when you are not being persecuted, media is trying to be greasy and get you to say shit about your teammates, they are calling your family trying to get inside info on you, you leave your house you got fans harassing you for signatures and selfies. You go to a place like Nashville and not a dang person cares who you are, you live life, go to dinner without be harassed, you might get a couple of beat reporters asking you questions, rarely. I dont think it is so much as it is the team as it is the shit environment that comes with playing in a big hockey market..

Yeah but this feels different. First of all, there hasn’t even been a whimper of rumours that Marner’s camp and Tre are talking contract extension.

So, if they lose in the 1st round again and Marner plays the way he has been for the last 4-5 playoffs, what makes you think they’re going to come to a contract agreement?
They won’t. And the Leafs will be better off using that $13M to build a better playoff roster.

The thing that's annoying is... part of Domi's value was what he did with Matthews towards the end of the year... we sign him and don't play him with Matthews............

The mistake was paying Domi because he did something with a elite star like Mathews.
Domi is the same player other NHL teams gave up on. He plays no D and never shoots. Gets pushed off the puck easily ....is lazy but gets a pass because he has a growl every once in awhile and picks on players who rarely fight.

Maple Leafs gets rejected by one of their top targets and former player!

Toronto now has to shift plans with hours left to make a move… Full story down below:

The Toronto Maple Leafs might have targeted Ryan O’Reilly from Nashville with hours left on deadline day, but according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the veteran forward has rejected the idea.

“Even though he doesn’t have a no-move clause, the Predators are treating it like he does. They won’t trade him unless it’s a big offer and unless he agrees to it. I think Toronto looked into O’Reilly and I think they were told he didn’t have an interest in that reunion.”
Certain posters said O'Reilly didn't want to re-sign because of the Toronto media, I tend to believe he saw this teams leadership group and sad work habits up close and said "nah these guys are soft, won't ever win a thing".

I think Tre is gonna get desperate, pull off a B. Schenn trade for all our picks and prospects, and we're gonna be out in the 2nd round against Florida/Tampa. If we don't win the division we're gonna be out 1st round against either Florida/Tampa.

Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if we were knocked out in the 1st round by Ottawa/Columbus/NYR/Detroit

That's EXACTLY why I haven't completely given up on him.

That's where he needs to be and on PP1(that top unit needs a shake up badly)

I agree with you.

But the thing is, basketball players in LA and baseball players in NY get some of this too but big names don't shy away from those markets. So what's the difference here?

I'm fine with paying somebody 3.75m if they can play with a star. Being able to play with a star player is kind of an undervalued skill. Hyman, Bunting did it well. You also need your 13m forward to be able to carry lesser linemates.

However! The thing about giving a contract to a player that solely does well with a star, as we are seeing now. If you take them away the contract becomes ass.

I agree with you.

NHL players are physically tough but mentally soft. It's probably the only sport in the world where most of the athletes already come from well off families. so that probably doesn't help

Ask them to waive or a list of teams they are willing to waive to . But Knies doesn't have no move.

They already said "no"

If Tre wants to keep on asking......they can just roll their eyes and say " Talk to my agent" and you gave Willy and Auston NMC again.......so "stop whining Tre" :)

"You didnt need to waste cap dollars on Domi, Reaves and their likes " :)

he said it himself in an interview, he didnt like the fish bowl attention in TO, and just couldnt handle the added pressure. not a guy i'd want back on my team, then add he saw first hand how the ref's 'favor' the Leafs lol, and that doesnt help either

These prices are outrageous and there’s no real difference maker on the market anymore. Schenn would be an albatross and Laughton ain’t good enough to be worth a 1st plus.

I hope we can at least get a depth right-shot defenseman so we can separate Rielly and OEL. Doesn’t seem likely though.
