I really don't see how B Schenn moves the needle to the point it guarantees us to get by the first two rounds.

I'm not really a fan spending a million assets for B. Schenn either but he's definitely a needle mover. People want more intensity and they want more "give a crap" attitude from players. He's that. A clear leader and full of intangibles. He's not an offensive powerhouse but he's capable there too.

People are tripping over each other to give Bennett 8M when Schenn is a similar player. He's older though.

Despise is a more polite word than I originally wanted to post.

We had our best chance to win something since around 2002 and Dubas and Shanahan blew it. They blew it out of ego, shortsightedness and a lack of fortitude. This right now is just trying to hang on but the real damage has long since already been done.

Our best chance was when we had the best collection of ELCs in the league.

Having a 1C, 1RW, and 2RW on ELCs... we signed Marleau.

I think Bennett is a fair bit better than Schenn at this point.

Schenn is over the hill

It will be pretty funny if Cowan does get traded and how quickly the perception around him will change from opposing fans.

Will quickly go from being an overrated prospect that had a disastrous world juniors to being a great prospect and the WJC being a short sample size, so it shouldn't be taken that seriously.

Selling the entire farm for 33 year old Brayden schenn is absolutely insane imo.
As for the Leafs, they remain connected to Brayden Schenn and Scott Laughton, but as The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta mentioned on Friday morning, there are two more players they've also turned their attention towards.

"As the Maple Leafs weigh their options, two players they continue to pursue as potential bottom-six adds including Brandon Tanev from Seattle and Luke Kunin from San Jose."

Schenn plays heavy, Bennett hurts people.

They need something a little more significant than a depth bottom 6 guy. They need a good third line centre or a second line centre that can push Tavares down to the third and they need a defenceman that can push timmins out of the lineup
They need much more than that, but let's stay grounded here.

If bennett makes it to free agency, I'm taking a swing at him

Oh, that's not it.

All you need to do is look at the boxscores from all the game 7s this core has played to understand why they haven't won. There's a whole lot of zeroes from the players that MLSE have spent the bulk of the team's cap on.

And under Dubas nobody could ever accuse him of being frugal when it came to making deadline deals to try and help this team win. Thankfully, under Treliving we've seen a more measured, arguably smarter approach.

Treliving gets that TDL is not the time to fill holes in your roster (like Dubas did) but to add complimentary pieces to a legit contender. Treliving past Summer went a long way to address real needs on this team outside the bottom 6. And unfortunately this season the Leafs are not a serious Cup threat. Too many "meh" numbers and not enough from this team to suggest they really want it this year.

TB & Florida can be confident making big deals even though they're roughly in the same place with similar concerns than Toronto because they both have a recent history of being winners. Toronto does not.
Next season Tanev will be 36, OEL will be 34, Tavares will be 35, or he won't be back at all. Knies, Woll and McCabe will get a combined 12 million in cap hit increases. Next years team is NOT going to be better then this years team. I don't know how they radically improve this roster next season given aging players and increased cap hits. This is the best time to go for it. They have been 1st/2nd all year in the division and adding a major 3C puts us right there to win a championship and we're probably due to beat Tampa and Florida, and we're probably better if we added another good piece. So I gotta disagree.

Tavares probably gets a HAUL and a half if they traded him now.

Leafs should explore selling some guys like Domi/Benoit/Jarnkrok/Robertson/Kampf/Timmins then using that capital to add.

But of course we know that this front office does not get creative.

How would you feel about Donato, Oleshiak/Tanev, and Kunin as your deadline deals from a Leafs perspective
I'd like that.

I really only want us to go after Donato, Tanev and Murphy.

Although I think a Donato and Murphy package would cost an absolute fortune right now.

Give a crap can’t be imported at the deadline. We’ve tried it before and if it’s not already in the room it won’t come from one mercenary. It feels so artificial and tacked on whenever we’ve tried it in the past.

What wins in playoffs? Goaltending, defense, size and special teams. Notice how there's no offence in that equation!!!!

Our goaltending is sound and will be better with more defense. Our size can be better but grit and being a pain in the ass during playoff time helps just as much. We have players to succeed on PP we just need to execute. PK can use an upgrade and using less of Matthews and Marner on it may benefit us in the playoffs.

We didnt need a Nelson, we dont need Rantanen or Schenn. We need character guys that will fill around what we have in the holes I have explained.

Just get Schenn from Pitt for Niemela or one of his former picks. If Blues want to cap dump his brother while he still has some value then they shouldn't be asking for much imo. Otherwise, I'm not paying much for the privilege of overpaying Brayden into his pre-retirement years.

I'm hoping the small decline we've seen in JT the last 10-15 games gives us pause in that rumoured $7M / yr contract. If we're going based only on outcomes, then it has.
