Yes it was a good move. How they finished the season doesn't determine if it was a good idea or not. Sarnia finally had a chance to make a good title run. They gave it their best effort. Nothing is guaranteed but that doesn't mean you don't try.

Maybe Letang isn't the one to get them over the hump. Maybe it'll be the next guy.
Respectfully disagree.
Missy won that trade the second they made it.
Martone was a massive overpay for 2 mos and 3 rounds of DelMastro plus they gave up a 2nd.

If indeed the Storm are selling and Buchinger on the block how about him and Poitras plus picks for Martin.
He should happily return home to play in front of family and friends where he scored his first visit home.
Should still have plenty of assets to still acquire Beck for a solid offense and defense to make a MC run. Maybe hard for Saginaw and Kitchener to màtch with current prices.

Some insight on Brantford being a contender. Their goal differential is -3 on the season. They’ve done well lately but their strength of schedule the last 6-8 weeks has been soft at best. Twelve of their last Fifteen games have been against teams currently in the bottom half of their respective conference standings. I think we need to take a step back and understand that there is only one true contender in the Eastern Conference and that is the Sudbury Wolves.

Until another team in the Eastern Conference steps up and makes serious buyer moves, Sudbury stands alone in the East. That said, the Wolves still need to follow through on their end and be the buyer we expect them to be, otherwise the separation between them and the rest of the conference will be very small.

Both teams can "win" a trade. It's not a zero sum game.

100%

I don’t think that is the true question in this case, though. The total sum of the two deals between the two teams is poor. IMO, a fair win for both sides would have been either MacDonell and more picks or Martone and maybe one or two picks.

I firmly believe the quality of the player In return needs to match the value of the return. It was pretty clear to see that Martone was the best player in the trade. For Sarnia to also give up MacDonell as well was overkill.

You cannot trade easily for size combined with skill so when you get a player like Martone that is big and can play at a high level, you have to value them much higher than Sarnia did. I honestly do not feel Sarnia placed a high enough value on Martone.

Additionally, you also need to factor his birthdate into the equation when comparing his stats as a 16 year old vs the player 6-10 months older. It isn’t often you see big kids with late birthdates performing at his level, even as a 16 year old last year.

So, although I 100% agree with your premise that you can have both teams win a trade, in this case, I feel Sarnia made a mistake. They should have known that at the time. If they are making a deal like that, it needs to be a deal to lock down the Conference, not just jump up and join the pack.

This is going to be an interesting deadline methinks.

It's very quiet out on the deal front past the Attack moving Addy and Matejicek to the Petes yesterday. This could mean there going to be a handful of moves made all at once or everyone is hold their cards close to the chest waiting for the next two teams to make a splash deal.

The silence is very, very unsettling for fans waiting to hear who makes the next chess move... waiting to hear the notification that a deal has been made...

Who all could be available for Europeans out there? Anyone have an idea

There are some interesting options for imports that might move. Vilmanis and Sale would be two big impact players if they move. It's still not clear who are the sellers though so tough to know exactly who might be available.

With games being played tonight I'll be curious as to healthy scratches pending trades. Example would be the Petes scratching Dubois or the Soo scratching anyone involved in meaningful trade talks.

Yes, whoever reads this... let everyone know if there are any curious scratches tonight.
I would agree with that statement if not for one giant flaw to that logic. The old theory that teams pulling players out of games means they're going to moved is an old dated philosophy.

These kids are so flexible nowadays on being moved and changing teams moving up the ranks that they could play on team A one night and be moved to team B the next day. The only real hook on deals these days has nothing to really do with players or where they played the night before but is a result of the sad incident that occurred in Saginaw years ago. Now teams must sent a representative to escort these kids to their destination which is all the result of the situation with Saginaw in and Trafford.

Healthy scratches for players being traded or shopped at this point doesn't have anything to do with being flexible and the ability to move quickly from one team to another in such a short period of time. It is about injuries. If you are working on a trade for player A and there are still a few minor details to work out, the new team getting player A will request the player be scratched to avoid an injury which in some cases could void the deal all together. Not going to finalize a trade on Thursday/Friday after the player just got hurt on Wednesday. Not only will you see some healthy scratches for some of these teams but I have noticed some significant line adjustments for some players which usually means they are getting shopped and they want to see if they can increase their value with more ice time and opportunities. Player moving from the 3rd line to the 1st line for a couple of games as well as some movement within special teams. Saw this happen with several teams since coming back from the break. Lots of moving parts and strategies.
