GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Keep Rielly and move someone else instead. I'd rather not retain at all, and certainly not for such a paltry return.
Yeah that's pretty shit.

The guy has had a couple of rough seasons but some teams have been paying crazy prices for d man and he could still be a 4 dman on a team like San Hose.

Not asking for a crazy pick or prospect but needs to be decent.

If we're going to dip into UFA im going after Arvidsson for that top 6 RW spot we need to fill. I also like the look of Shea and Bjorkstrand

Well imo I watched the hound line work their way up in placements ( yes that was ages ago) but still, even just easing him in and then trying him out on the top two lines learning how to adjust to bigger stronger players from the get go would be great if he could. Guess I got a lil more patience.
It has nothing to do with patience. It’s about what is best for the player’s development and the team.
Neither of those are served best by playing this player on the 4th line with mediocre players

Rielly's cap hit is 7.5M but is only making 6M per for the rest of his contract.

We should not retain on him. Ever.

If we retain, I expect a 1st rd or 2nd rd + prospect. If we're only getting a mid rd pick, then his whole cap hit goes with him.
Rather take a cap dump then retention.

errr. Knies for 4th Overal and Frondell would've NICEEE

McKenna - Matthews
-Frondell - Nylander

and a top line Dmen with the 4th Overall

Hoping for Knies for 4th + Helenius + Mrtka
I'd do Helenius + the 4th overall pick for Knies if there's a way to guarantee we land Marchment.

Replacing Knies with Marchment while having Helenius step in immediately as the 3rd-line center, plus adding a prospect like Chase Reid or Carels, is the type of asset management that makes us better in both the short and long term.

That Knies trade is god awful. Other two, sure.
The Knies deal offers a player that could step in and fill a long term void, a defenseman pick who is better than the Leafs have had a shot at since Clark, and a 1st next year from a club who is pretty much guaranteed to miss the playoffs again. Nothing awful about that if you think that Wright is the real thing and you accept that Knies growth potential is unclear. This is a strong draft year for D with a bunch of point producers there who arent kewpie dolls for a change

Knies 22 and 23 year old seasons were not as good as Brady Tkachuk's and Tkachuk is not just physical, he is a physical force. After those two years Brady hasn't really ramped it up and but for injuries would have maybe hit 80pts in year 8. They are somewhat similar but Knies doesn't shoot nearly as much so his chances of ever hitting close to 40g are poor. So Tkachuk, at least based on his Ottawa time is established as a 30+g 75ish point guy with a high of 37g and 83p. Without better comps I would suggest Knies' likely high point is a little less than that with fewer people beat up along the way. He strikes me as an excellent complimentary player beside Matthews/Marner or Bedard/?

At what point does he become the guy you would be nuts to trade? For me that hits around 85pts with just a bit more physicality. Thats as rare as a top pairing D and big enough to grind the other defense down. You can't consider dealing that for a maybe.

At 70ish pts I have no concerns with moving him. Bobby McMann played at a 63pt clip in Seattle beside Eberle and Beniers for 17:58 a night. Knies value is in his potential to grow beyond Bobby Mac and the other 60ish point guys. Right now he has that potential but to me he is still a winger and therefore worth more as a trade chip than what his mostly likely outcome as a Leaf is. I am biased because I do like Wright a bit (more than McTavish who I also like) but I see MK as a possible solution to the fragile center position rather than also fixing the D today.

I don't know why people are so high on Mrtka? Is it the size or the previous 9th overall pedigree? Not sure what I'm missing. I'll admit I haven't seen much of him but the few times I did and looking at his point totals it's not... great. I'd have Danford above him and that's not saying much.

Helenius and the fourth is obviously a good start.
