Samoskevich has much better defensive impacts, he's a RS RW which is significantly more scarce, he's bigger and he's younger. Mackie is much more likely to carve out a career as a good 3rd liner than Nick.
1 year difference. Robertson lost a whole season to injury and still made the NHL at the same age as Samoskevich.

RS and pk is worth a 1st and 2nd? They better hope for a lot more than that.

Seattle is a shit show. Borderline collusion.

Or maybe Samoskevich just has more value than a guy like Robertson.

That's not my point. Samo is better valued for sure, he's slightly bigger with a cup ring and plays on the right, 2 things Seattle needed. Still an overpay based on what he's done. If he doesn't improve with the increased minutes, it's pretty much a disaster for a very average team.

The difference in terms of value is not a 1st and a 2nd to zero from Samo to Robertson.

I’d say Seattle did fine in the trade. They’re hoping to get a player like Samoskevich in 5 years from the 25OA. They’re basically just got 23 year old RS Coleman.

Yes - the mediocre 7OA. The mediocre future 1st. Basically nothing assets.
in the last 20 years there are only 5 7oas that I would take over knies.

Hughes
Scheif
Voracek
Ryan Suter
Keller

Honestly 7th+ wouldn't be bad so you're not wrong.

Having said that I don't see why we take that risk when knies is signed up for a sweetheart deal and is young. Do we really think he can't hit ppg consistently?

For me it has to be for a premier defender or centre.

Robertsons been up and down and has almost 100 moreNHL games under his belt

Samoskevich has that first round pedigree still and has more steady production in his first two full seasons

That said this trade should help Robertson’s value
The question I’d ask myself if I was trading for Nick Robertson is: where does he play on a winning team? Is he good enough defensively to be the 3rd cog on one of my top 2 lines? No. Is he good enough to be a driver on my 3rd line? No.

Bobrovsky makes zero sense to me. Rumours are he's after like 6 years X $7M? I wouldn't even take him at half of that, for 3 years X $3.5M. He was a BAD starter last year, and is 38 years old this training camp.

I think if the Leafs went for him he'd be signed to a bigger aav 1-2 year deal. He was bad last year - but so was Florida as a team. I can see a logic to it though. They could potentially have three goalies up with Hildeby, and then maybe trade Stolarz midseason when another team needs a new goalie

The rumors are interesting though, a good reminder that the new front office has zero connection to any previous plans/thinking. Going to be a lot of big changes.

The issue is there’s risk in keeping him. Knies makes most sense to move off PP1 for McKenna - so now you’re cannibalizing his offense. Cowan likely never gets top 6 opportunity if Knies stays as well so you’re stunting his growth.

One of the terms John Chayka used with respect to our current roster was "latent upside". As in, there is potential on the current roster that either has room to develop or underperformed to their potential. I think that is a fairly accurate assessment with respect to last years team. Almost every player underperformed with respect to their potential, and I expect, if nothing else were to change, we could expect improvement in the overall results.

That "latent upside" also has me wondering what potential targets around the NHL that fill that same mold. We filled a major need on the back end already, but we really could use an upgrade at the 2C position for the foreseeable future. JT is still highly effective, but we need to expect regression is just around the corner.

A player that fits the latent upside demo that I believe could be had would be Shane Wright. This is clearly a player who has underperformed to expectation thus far in his career, but he still has plenty of room to grow. I also think when you look a bit closer at the Seattle roster, and see fellow "blue chip" prospect Matty Beneirs fail to do anything close to what was originally projected of him, you start to see the potential flaw in Seattle as an organization at developing their prospects. The Kraken have had 16 of their 41 picks since becoming a franchise be within the top 2 rounds of the NHL draft, and they essentially have nothing of note to show for it. Is it possible this is a franchise that struggles to develop talent? similar to NYR?

Shane Wright and/Matty Beneirs may not be the players everyone thought the would become, but they aren't the players they presently are IMO.

This will rub a lot of people the wrong way, but I actually think there is just too much smoke on the Matthew Knies front to ignore. I also look back at the blueprint episode (season 11 episode 5) featuring Matthew Knies, and it shows him routinely eating on the road with Benoit, Woll, and McMann. All of which are no longer on our roster. Not suggesting he doesn't have any other buddies on the team, but I imagine with the flurry of rumors, report of a failed trade attempt, and the departure of his buddies, he may be less than completely content.

I am curious if a deal like this could work:

To TOR: Shane Wright, 2026 7th overall pick, 2027 1st round pick (whichever of the 2 they have ends up worse)
To SEA: Matthew Knies, Morgan Reilly

We could then use the 2x 2027 1st round picks as currency to improve our roster in other ways.

I don't typically take much away from the Steve Dangle Podcast, but one thing they noted that absolutely needs to be addressed is the lack of right shooting players in our forward group. Wright is a RH shooter, and an ideal candidate to fill a 2C role. The 7th overall selection allows you to select one of whoever is left between Malhotra, Carels, Reid, Verhoff, and Bjork. Hell even Tynan Lawrence is creating a bit of buzz as well.

To me , Wright represents a similar upside to what Pavel Zacha presented to the bruins when they acquired him. Clearly mishandled asset in NJ, who immediately finds a role in top 6 in BOS. To me, I see that as a very realistic outcome for Wright, with a potentially higher ceiling outcome.
If Seattle accepted that package, I would strongly consider picking whoever between Viggo and Carels are available … otherwise a small trade back for two firsts to get a combo of Malte Gustafsson/Gleb…could be absolutely huge for the team. Love Knies but if other teams are willing to overpay…

So you're complaining that the Leafs might have too much talent in the Top 6?

There is no risk to the team if Knies isn't on the Top PP unit because they have better players for the Top PP Unit.

Your slip is showing. ;)

You need more good guys.

Straight up depth wins. We lose knies and that top 6 looks like doodoo unless it's a hockey trade.

At that point get rid of Matty and willy as well but we know that's not the plan otherwise why sign raddysh

Samoskevich is a year younger and was on the cheaper contract for similar production (both he and Robertson obviously need new contracts now). Still, Robertson's return shouldn't be worth too much less in the event of any trade.

At #7 you're almost certain to be left with one of Carels, Verhoeff or Smits.

Before we won the lottery, many around here where hyping up these players and would have celebrated bigtime if we got one.

And the 9th. overall pick the Senators just got could end up being one of the above.

A new mock draft after the Tkachuk deal ...

Smits to Ottawa.

Senators with $27mm in Capspace. Should be an interesting free agency, when some teams have a boatload of cash.

Having great players in the bottom 6 is a good thing. Having great players in the bottom 6 while missing the playoffs is poor roster construction.

I wholeheartedly agree that depth wins but they are nowhere close to winning. Picking up Wright+7+future 1st for Knies goes further towards building depth than keeping Knies does.

Not liking these goalue rumors...

Maybe Bob for 2 year deal?
They would be better to give him a front-loaded longer term deal to cram down the AAV and the make the actual dollars small in the later years. These deals will be easy to move in the future to teams that are just trying to reach the cap floor.

I would have assumed they were perfectly content with Stolarz/Hildeby with AA getting called for injuries. Maybe Stolarz' injury is more serious than we are let on to believe, or they have a trade for him in the works too?
