How come?

Its a #2/3D + top 6W + potential top 6C + 1st

I am trading them with extensions in that case and not as rentals

I agree its not a franchise piece but its a Canes - Rantanen esque deal where you build the depth and be a more complete team.

Ofcourse it wont happen in reallife but just wanted to see how deep a team we can build cap wise and we can build 3 great lines + 2 great pairings pretty easily if we want to

Dunn is at best a 3, maybe a 4. He's older

McCann is older, middle 6

Wright is a 3rd line centre, is he more? I don't know

a 18-30 range 1st

I'm not trading Knies for pieces, I want 1 piece maybe 2 back that are of high quality, not a bunch of things.

The defenseman also needs to be age appropriate, there are only a few in the league and most aren't available.

Here's what I don't get -- what are you actually going to do with the cap space that trading him gets you?

I think that's a question for another day. I'm sure they plan on adding a player to replace him -- directly or indirectly. I am not sure.

I understand it needs to happen... but I'll be pretty sad when it hits. I was pretty sad with Woll leaving too.

Mixed feelings. Always loved the player... good leader on the team, long term Leaf, who loved being here.

But, it's time for a change for both the Leafs, and Rielly, it's just the sad reality. We need to change some things up, and it's probably best for him to go. We haven't had success here that we want, though we've had some really good teams.

It's 4 years worth of capspace. Don't necessarily need to use it today.

Also if Raddysh is on PP1, Rielly struggles 5 on 5, and Rielly has already started to decline, are we getting good bang for our buck at that caphit?

The cap is going up another $10m next year; and the Leafs don't have much in the way of expiring money.

As for the 5on5 struggles, a lot of that coincided with the arrival of Craig Berube.

Why do we need to answer that right now?

Because cap space doesn't win you games. Talent does... with the skyrocketing cap, this is becoming a league that is very much about hoarding your own talent and doing hockey trades vs being able to spend on quality in free agency.

I'd much rather have Morgan Rielly at $7.5m a year from now, than OEL with 1 year left at $3.5m.

I wonder if this involves narrowing it down to teams that Rielly would go to and said teams have genuine interest so they can start negotiating price

Absolutely love the progressive moves to get ahead of things.

The defense is coming together:

McCabe-Raddysh
OEL-Tanev
Andrae-Carlo

I fully expect 1 of those defensemen (Carlo) to still be moved and I’m bracing for 2 (McCabe or OEL) to be moved.

Does Knies return a current day top 4 defenseman instead of a futures package?

If the goal was to add 2 more puck movers they’re still 1 short considering they’re reportedly going to move off Rielly. That’s if we consider Andrae a puck mover.
In fairness it is still
McCabe-Raddysh
OEL-Tanev
Reilly-Carlo
Andrae-Myers

End of season I would have said get rid of Rielly no matter what. Now with the new coach, the 1st overall pick and adding raddysh making mo a 4 or 5 there's a small part of me that would like to see another season from him. I still lean towards moving him though.

Not sure will Reilly waive for the Hawks
I mean, it's the same position or logic as the supposed SJ deal, but I think the makeup of the D core makes more sense in Chicago at a glance.

Maybe Pittsburgh with KD, if they lose Shea and/or find a taker for Graves. Calgary is a fit in terms of positional needs and in a geographic sense, but not as much for competitiveness.

Perhaps it is SJ, but Orlov, Dickinson and Rielly aren't the most diverse group on the left side, and possibly Nurse is the better fit for them.

Chayka basically shut down Knies rumours. (Yes, I know)

And this is the way it should be. If someone wants to massively overpay anyone should be available.
But at the same time he isn’t a player we should be looking to trade unless that happens.

All these proposals for a pile of mystery boxes prospect and picks don’t interest me. Someone like Harley does but it doesn’t feel like that is going to happen.

What do you think about the Leafs using an RFA offer sheet?

I’d look at the $2.39M–$4.78M range, where the compensation would only be a 2027 2nd-round pick.

A few names I’d consider:

Simon Nemec: I know this is very unlikely and New Jersey probably matches, but I’d still try: 2 years × $4.775M.

Mackie Samoskevich:good speed, skill and top-9 upside. I’d offer around 2 years × $4.5M.

Mavrik Bourque : smart, skilled forward who could add more depth up front. I’d offer around 2 years × $4.25M.

Cole Perfetti: Ontario guy, creative and still young. Maybe unrealistic, but I’d be very interested at 2 years × $4.775M.
Nemec is the only one that would work the others are all matched in an instant. But I don't think Nemec is a Devil past the first night of the draft.
One player that I think they really should consider signing is Jack Drury in Colorado. He wants around 5 million and Avs are digging in at 2.

Dunn is pretty much Raddysh on the left side. He has been averaging 56 pts per 82 past 4 years for Seattle. Low end #1D at his best but realistically a good #2D behind Raddysh and is only 30 as well.

McCann is as productive as knies but older of course and not a PwF build but has flexibility to play C. He has averaged 63 pts per 82 last 5 years in Seattle with limited talent besides him.

Wright has high upside, still a good bet to develop into a Sam Benett type player. I would love to take that upside and bank on it. 2C if we develop him right to replace tavares and behind him we have Koblar in 2 years too.

The 1st is a 1st and brings another good strong future asset if drafted and developed correctly.

Capspace wise we are also sending out 11M or so and taking in 13.5M or so for 3 guys vs 2.

My approach for a knies deal is opposite. Trading him for Harley 1 for 1 or Morrisey 1 for 1 isnt what we need.

We need quality secondary players behind the core who can elevate and become playoff guys.

We need our key supporting secondary core guys like the panthers ir even canes had:

Forsling or KAM (Dunn)
Bennett or Blake (McCann)
Lundell or Stank (Wright)

I think trading Knies for a Harley with Raddysh here now would hurt our team more than it helps.

If we deal Knies I want either a package like the SEA one or ones like the below

Mateychuk + Voronkov + 14th OA
Gavrikov + Cuylle + Rangers 27 1st + 28 1st

My Order of preference:

1. Dont deal knies and find a way too add Gavrikov as our 2D + sign Tuch
2. Trade Knies for the SEA, CBJ, or NYR type package above
3. Trade Knies for a Harley or Morrisey or similar type Dman.

Would you give the col 1st back to get him ? Thats likely the ask.

Seems obvious the next domino is Rielly, then Carlo

would be great to get all these wheeling and dealings done well ahead of draft day so they can focus their strategy

This. Barring him being an essential piece to get a player you want, keep him and do McCabe-Raddysh, Rielly-Tanev, Andrae-Carlo.

I think OEL is also more valuable in trade.

You move Rielly + 2026 3rd to sharks for 27th overall. Then package 27th overall + Col 1st for Gavrikov. Then sign Tuch.
