The Sens are on like their 4th captain in a row that requested a trade. Players just don't want to be in Ottawa - the worst kept secret in the league.

Matthews actually re-signed as a UFA. Brady didn't. Hughes didn't. Matthew didn't. They all wanted out before their RFA deal ended.
The landscape has changed a ton since he last signed that contract. While we’re sitting here giggling at each other in Canada, no Canadian team has won a Stanley cup in 3 decades and American players are asking out pretty regularly. It doesn’t help that our best Canadian players also stay in the US and play for big American markets.

If only there was a really highly regarded Canadian winger that the Leafs could draft somewhere in this draft.

What do the advanced stats say about him?
Good player, not a unicorn. The eye test says the same. I think the Leafs version of Hyman was a better fit with Matthews than current Knies.

If Knies was as good as some people say he is he would have been on the Olympic team over the non-unicorns.

It's not just Canadian teams. I live in Michigan and the Wings can't even get local players to stay. There's ~25 teams that will be left behind.
The overall lower revenue will eventually force the league to make changes. For now (in their mind) it allows the southern teams to take hold within the fanbases before rebalancing the league again.

It’s time for Connor, Nate and Sid to say, trade me to the Leafs.

The whole league is getting worse by the year.

It’s a pretty bad deal for the Sens too in my opinion. Really not a great package for Brady. Something else going on there for sure.
I have think the Sen’s made out like bandits, it’s all future’s but he didn’t want to be in Ottawa so better than watching him walk, imagine the return for Knies?

You are not factoring in contract efficiency. dollar per points. I think Knies is 3rd in the league for LW’s.

I don't understand this Sens got fleeced sentiment, based on the situation, I think they've made out quite well. They now have 3 first rounders in this draft, plus they have two future picks to play with, lots of options, lots of cap space. It's up the GM to make it work, but the pieces are there. I hate the Sens too, but seems a good haul to me.

Because a player of his caliber, pedigree and importance to said team probably needs to return more than 2x1st round picks, one barely in the top 10. The other 1st round pick is 3 years from now, which is top 10 protected (Treliving couldn't even get ours to be top 10 protected for the Carlo debacle....)

They got the best they could, but doesn't change that it wasn't very good. I'd be livid if we got that for Knies, or Matthews for that matter. But it's better than nothing I guess.

They made out quite well if they're about to kick start a rebuild. They did not get a single NHL player or prospect. The picks are mostly protected.

If they hit on a player, at best they can hope that player joins their team in 2? seasons and has to develop and grow into his prime when all the other players retire?

They basically traded Brady for mystery boxes - no guarantee it ever amounts to something, and even if it does amount to something - the core will likely be too old to support them at that point.

JRob, Connor, Hagel, Slaf, Forsberg, Keller, Bratt, Barbashev, Holloway, Protas, MoJo, Boldy, Hall, Bertuzzi, Marchand, Hyman and about 30 others are ahead of him on this. That list includes Maccelli and Robertson as higher "dollar per points" as LW on the Leafs.

I also think this is a team that makes both teams worse next season.

Ottawa gave away Brady for futures that will not be on the team next year.
Florida just added another winger at 8M while having no goalie and an aging defence/forward group. They're now cash-strapped to add Brady to a team that didn't need Brady.

He wanted to go there, Florida wasn't going to part with players, so they took a bunch of picks, which they should be able to turn into something. Under the circumstances it's a good return, our situation isn't analogous because we don't have a player saying he doesn't want to be here. Context matters here.

I understand the context, but it still wasn't good, that's the bottom line. We'll see how they pivot.
