Not sure why the Blue Jackets would even consider the deal. You're better off losing him in two years if thats the case.

Cowan, Danford, Tinus-Luc Koblar, 2027 COL 1st ?
Way too much potential given away imo, Chaka’s smarter than that, maybe the reason Knies isn’t going to Columbus is it’s a three way deal?

While Tampa's package is probably some kind of underwhelming combination of Moser + Geekie + 1st + O'Reilly... If Toronto's package doesn't include Knies, it would have to be an even more underwhelming Cowan + Danford or Andrae + Goalie or TLK + 1st... I hope I'm dead wrong, but I don't see a world in which this gets done without Knies as the centerpiece.

By most reports I've seen from Columbus media guys they want a roster players as the main part of the return - which is likely Knies.

Adding Werenski without losing Knies would be the greatest right place right time trade of all time.

Crazier things have happened:

Knies is not close to ZW, a Norris winning dman who plays 28 minutes per game and in all situations.
It’s not a pure hockey trade. Werenski has only 2 years left on his contract whereas Knies has 6 years remaining on a cheap contract. Therefore Knies has higher relative value to his production compared with Werenski. The cost to extend Werenski could be $18M AAV.

If Cowan’s part of the deal the extras attacked will kill the future of the team imo, better to lose on guy plus a small add if need be than to once again empty the cupboards for one player.

Not really, we just drafted 10 guys. To me the leafs have a bunch of magic beans. No one out side of McKenna and Cowan are sure things. So I’m pretty much willing to give up any prospect right now if it pushes us closer to grabbing Werenski. I think adding Werenski is also beneficial because him and Matthews are best friends. They combined with McKenna are rhe future.

I would think it’s Cowan + one of the defenseman with an NMC but Columbus isn’t on their list (McCabe, OEL or Rielly) + prospects + COL 1st. I think you make that deal any day of the week for Werenski

If he ends up in Tampa then its clear Werenski only had the one team on his list becasue asset wise the leafs have much better potential offers.
CBJ may or may not be playing the Leafs as leverage. We have no idea what Tampa is willing to offer. Leafs have Knies+ or Nylander+ and Willie has a NMC.

We've run this hyper offensive build but never had anyone even close to the talent level of Werenski on the backend moving the puck and manning the PP.

You add this guy and he'd instantly increase the ceiling of all our offensive core guys.

You almost never get a chance to acquire someone of this talent.

I like all 3 prospects but come on, odds are the best piece out of that is a good not great 2nd line winger. The bigger risk is looking back and realizing you could have had a Norris winner for Liljegren, Brown/Moore, SDA, and a late 1st but held on to them cause of potential.

I hope Waddell agrees with your logic.

There's zero chance Willy (or anyone with an NTC/NMC for that matter) would waive it willingly go to Columbus. So I'd assume it's likely Knies as the main part of any return

ZW in similar situation as Hughes. Canucks still got the value of 4 firsts. The cost for dmen/players is about to go through the roof so yes, Knies with 5 years on a sweet deal is worth a lot but not enough to get ZW close to one for one IMO. Not many teams out there willing to pay the going rate which tilts the ice in the Leafs favour.

They should have addressed this need 10 yrs ago. The fact that Chayka realizes the need for a 1D is refreshing.
