GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

I think the only player that could be moving soon is Carlo. The new coach may not be so quick to move on from Reilly if they are horrible offers and asking for retention.

If Reilly is still on the team come the season, I kind of wonder who is his partner. Danford should volunteer to be his partner in preseason. If he makes Reilly look half way competent, Danford is on the team.
I could see a world where Tanev transitions to Danford as Rielly's D partner.

Personally feel like there won't be anymore major moves until UFA opens, but let's see I guess. At most I expect some pick swapping / draft position trades.

Tomorrow's draft could see based on who is picked in the Top 8.

Lazy Google:

Tier 1: Franchise Superstars (Picks 1-3)
These players project as immediate, top-line difference-makers and franchise centerpieces.
  • Gavin McKenna (LW, Penn State) - Consensus top prospect and dynamic offensive playmaker. Projected to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • Ivar Stenberg (LW/RW, Frölunda) - Elite goal-scorer and SHL star, leading international skaters.
  • Caleb Malhotra (C, Brantford) - High hockey IQ and two-way center, viewed as the top pivot in the class. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Tier 2: Elite Two-Way Defensemen (Picks 4-8)
This is an incredibly deep group of NHL-sized defensemen with top-pairing potential. [1]
  • Chase Reid (D, Sault Ste. Marie) - Top-ranked North American defenseman.
  • Keaton Verhoeff (D, North Dakota) - Massive, highly mobile two-way defenseman.
  • Carson Carels (D, Prince George) - Strong transitional skater with a powerful shot.
  • Daxon Rudolph (D, Prince Albert) - Exceptional hockey sense and puck-moving ability.
  • Tynan Lawrence (C, Boston University) - Highly skilled forward pressing into the top group. [1, 2, 3]

Sounds like Robertson could be on the move today (not ours).
Still really weird to me that a team would want to avoid paying and trade a 6'3" player that has averaged nearly 90 points for 5 straight seasons and will only be 27 years old next season.

I would be looking to move literally anything else.

I really like Helenius, and I had posted multiple times that he was the best player in the Marlies vs. Rochester Series. I'm not sure he's ready to play C at the NHL level though. He's primarily been used by Buffalo as a RW... which is kind of a need anyway.

I think Buffalo had better center options, so there was no need to throw him into the fire. On the Leafs they could play him on the 3rd line and let him develop/learn the position.

Part of me thinks that San Jose may pull the trigger with the 2OA. They are looking to move forward with a talented young core. Stenberg would be amazing for them but he may be a couple of years from being truly impactful, even though he may be able to technically play next season. Knies is plug and play for them.

I think the Leafs are probably playing San Jose and Buffalo off each other to see who will flinch first. The good news is that there is a finite timeframe on this as the draft is tomorrow night.

Given how many good players want out of Buffalo, Knies gives them a cost-controlled player with term on an extremely reasonable contract. They may overpay greatly for that to keep the team competitive.

Will be fun to see how this plays out. Obviously nothing will come of it and we will all be disappointed but at least it was fun to daydream for a few days lol

I’m not that high on Power. I think he tops out as a good #3 Dman.
I also really don’t think Buffalo wants to trade him after they just moved Byram.

You will get much better value out of them from other players.

I would agree that Buffalo would be hesitant to move Power... but I'm hesitant to move Knies. If moving Knies doesn't result in obtaining a D man, who can play on our top pair immediately, it's a deal I'm not interested in.... unless it becomes a ridiculous ridiculous overpay.

Power is stuck behind Dahlin in top offensive opportunities, and doesn't get a lot of PP time, or with the top unit. You aren't getting Power to be a #1 D, you are getting him, because the type of D he is, and will be, is exactly the kind of guy you want to be playing with Raddysh. He's the top results PK D on Buffalo, and provides a steadying influence on the D.

Power played a ton on his offside, babysitting Bryam... a guy who really doesn't know how to play Defense... and they ended up positive +-. He's only 23, still learning his craft, and signed for five more years.

Power and Raddysh would make an excellent top pairing for us, for years to come... frankly, there aren't too many guys you'd prefer to have with Raddysh, based on skill set, and age.

In the years to come, people will realize that they were sleeping on Power.... though he'll still never get the offensive opportunities to fulfill his potential in Buffalo. He'll be stuck on the 2nd line, not because he isn't good, but because Dahlin is elite.

I’d go with one of the Dmen. I’m not convinced Malhotra’s offensive game will translate at the NHL level.
High floor with his 2 way game but I don’t think he meets his offensive ceiling

It really depends on what else comes with any trade package right? If you get Power + 4OA... maybe you want the C? Whether that's Malholtra, or Bjork... we'd have choices. I'm not convinced Malholtra is going to be a first line C, but I think a 45-60 point, responsible 2 way game, is what we'd love to have behind Matthews... assuming he's here for the duration.

If you get forwards... like McLeod, or Helenius... then you probably draft D....

I think it's a...depends on what we've got, and what we need.

Helenius did play at C... and wasn't particularly effective in my viewings... more the point. If he was better than their C options, he would have played there. No question he's a talent though..

Such BS from Chayka. I am so sick of the same core that never got it done. Over and over and over again. It's gotten quite stale.
Chill, it isn’t even July 1st yet there is still tons to do.
I’m not at all sold on Chayka yet but I’m not going to start criticizing him until I have a clearer picture of what we are doing

I didn't listen to Chayka's comments about trading for another pick but what's everyones takeaway.

Do you think it's more of less likely Knies is moved after what was said?

Just from what I have observed I just haven’t seen it in Power. He isn’t a bad player, just not one that has wow’d me.
Sure if you give him more opportunities maybe he gives you more but he has never been someone I come away from watching and think that he is a star.

Chayka even admitted just an hour ago that they have a lot of work to do still and a lot of holes they want to fill. Seemed to hint very strongly that they want to make strong changes.

No idea how he'll go about it but you can expect some form of changes, for better or worse.

Malhotra is the next KK and Lawrence will bust. Not sure how Malholtra gets rated as a franchise center piece when even the most opportunistic rating of his has him as a high end 2C.

I never thought it was very probable Knies would be moved. What he said didn't change that. If someone gives an offer we can't refuse, we won't refuse. They'll listen, but aren't actively shopping him.
