GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

This is strictly if Reid is still available at 4 tomorrow.

To Toronto-
4th overall pick (Chase Reid)
Ryan McLeod
Radim Mrtka

To Buffalo-
Matthew Knies
Brandon Carlo

I suggested a very similar deal, just had Kulich also coming our way.

Buffalo is a divisional rival and right now we give up the best player, we need a little something extra to put it over the top.

So basically Chayka just shut up every insider again.

Agreed. Honestly, its the right hedge if it doesnt work out and Matthews wants to leave next year or the year after.

We had 9 years of playoffs with:

C Matthews
RW Marner
RW Nylander
LD Rielly

If we can pull off Helenius and 4th overall for Knies. We might already be better off than the previous core that took 5 years to build.

LW McKenna
C Helenius
C Koblar
LW Cowan
D Reid/Carels
D Danford

You are much stronger on D, just as good at wing. Only real drop off is at centre. But you still have potential returns for Matthews and Nylander which should net even more young players - at least 5-6 more assets. Not to mention we look solid in goal with Hildeby and Aktayamov.

This is the way to go which can help you win now and 10+ years in the future.

If Leafs can get 4OA and Helenius for Knies I think we need to pull the trigger. Something AMAZING is going to be available at 4 and Helenius can probably step in this season.

Mostly after quite a bit of chatter some teams will circle back post July 1st in some attempt to get it done to improve their team(s) if they miss out on other options or free agents. Just a pure guess though.

Makes sense if they strike-out in free agency ... but by then the Leafs may be less willing to move him.

EDIT: Western teams?

Wonder if EP40 could play into a future trade in July?

It's a puzzling wish list from Buffalo. You've got Reid and Mrtka... both RHD.... and yet, we just signed Raddysh to be our top RHD, and have Danford coming. If we have a need going forward, it's LHD, not RHD, and we certainly don't really need two RHD prospects. Our LHD prospects/young players is pretty non-existent, unless you could Andrae.... I like Chadfield, but he's probably not going to be more than a bottom pairing guy.

Plus this trade makes us WORSE, immediately. We aren't going to make a more, that makes us worse tomorrow, than we were today. McLeod is a decent 2C, no question there, but overall I think Knies is better.

If we are moving Knies, then it's Power you want. He'd easily be on our top pairing, good defensive LHD, would make a very good top pairing with Raddysh. Power + 4th is probably an overpay from Buffalo, but I'm not in the charity business.

It also frees you up, to pick the best player available at #4 OA, whether that is Reid, Carels, Malhotra, or Bjork. There is a good argument for each of those players.

Knies + 60th Overall Selection for Power + 4th Overall Selection ?

I really like Helenius, and I had posted multiple times that he was the best player in the Marlies vs. Rochester Series. I'm not sure he's ready to play C at the NHL level though. He's primarily been used by Buffalo as a RW... which is kind of a need anyway.

Exactly. I personally like Carels more than Reid. He has a more well rounded game.

Reid is great. But i think people just like him more because he is a right shot which is valuable.

But Carels might be a better fit and player for the Leafs (full stop).

Either or good but they both are top D.

You obviously make room for Reid if you take him. But we already have Raddysh locked up. Tanev for 4 more years and our next best prospect defender is Danford. If we are lucky and land Mrtka too. Thats 3-4 long term RHD. Rielly is likely gone and OEL is older and likely wont re-sign. So we only really have McCabe and Andrae on the left side. Carels would flourish.

Carels...Canadian, is going to be a top pair defenseman that touches every part of your team for a long time.

Personally feel like there won't be anymore major moves until UFA opens, but let's see I guess. At most I expect some pick swapping / draft position trades.
