Surprised Virtanen is still o0ut there. If Deangelo can get signed, have to assume someone will take a chance on Virtanen for really cheap.
I believe Virtanen signed in the KHL.

Looking at Cap Friendly for PTO options:

Zajac
Demers
Vatanen
Gusev
Bobby Ryan
Ennis
Galchenyuk
Hutton

From what I've seen, Virtanen isn't the player he was a few years ago. Injuries have seriously hampered his effectiveness.

Honestly, there isn't much worth looking at there are tall. There are reasons that these guys aren't signed.

Zajac is just not effective anymore.

Demers doesn't bring anything we don't already have. Vatanen wasn't very good last year, NJD couldn't trade him, ended up putting him on waivers.

Ryan is done. Galchenyuk we've seen, and at minimum he's worthy of being bench depth. Gusev has offensive upside, but again, not the type of player that would add to what we already have.

Hutton brings some size to the D, but given he was in the organization last year, and for whatever reason, they have no interest, or he doesn't... tells you everything you need to know.

It's basically the unwanted players pile, and nobody adds anything to what we already have.

I wonder if there's something going on with Hutton, he played 18:30 per game including #1PK minutes for the Ducks last year. Granted they were bad but he actually played pretty well for them, especially as a PKer.

He looked decent for us as well in a bottom pairing role and then he just disappeared with that mysterious out indefinitely with "not hockey related but also not covid related medical situation", where he left the team and now he's still unsigned and I haven't seen anything about him since. Based on his play the last couple years he seems to be a very capable, bottom pair and PK specialist who can play up in the lineup if needed.

You might be on to something... he was good for the Kings the year before.. and now on nobody's radar.

If I were the Leafs I would be speaking to Chara agent to bring him in on a 1yr 1million deal. Although he is up there in age he definitely would be an asset on the backend for the PK and playing final minutes of the game with the lead.

His reach and size is exactly what the Leafs need. Sell him on playing the Bruins 8 times a year and proving them wrong!!!!

I don’t personally see anything left in Chara’s game. He’s just a liability at this point imo

I think that rookie D, should have experienced, and often physical partners to help them ease into the NHL. I do wonder if Chara might be a better partner for Sandin in that regards, over Dermott./Liljegren. I'd love to see a rotation between Dermott, Sandin, Chara, Liljegren and Holl... easing Sandin and Liljegren into the lineup... pair Liljegren with Muzzin at times, and Sandin with Chara... The salary cap, and waiver issues wouldn't allow this though. Kind of a player/coach role.

The 35+ performance bonuses on Bozak's deal are presumably something the Leafs didn't want to touch.

Still only $2M in cap and I think he takes less than that in guaranteed money. If you think last season is all Kerfoot has to offer it seems like a no brainer because you move Kerfoot's $3.5m out for assets plus cap savings. I think they feel Kerfoot will show more this season and that there is actual distance between the two talents so Boz has no real space to fill. They may have been in on him anyways, who knows?

What’s the incentive for Seattle? I don’t know anything about the 2 guys mentioned but just wondering why they would make that trade based on your descriptions
What’s the incentive for the Leafs to make that deal? Kerfs one of the only reliable depth guys on the forward core, like it or not he’s too valuable to the roster construction either as a top 6 LW or 3C as well as being a PK guy. He’s not being dumped for magic beans.

Apparently they liked Kerfoot and were prepared to take him. They get a top 9 player in exchange for 2 players that probably won't make their opening night roster.
If they’re not making an expansion teams opening line up then why would Toronto be interested in either of them in exchange for a guy who’s kind of important to what the team will get done this year.

Ryan scored four goals in his first three games with the Red Wings, and three more over the next 30. His comeback was a good story, but unfortunately his story is over.

This is in regards to PTO's. I never said give him a 3 yr contract.

That's fair, but I'd prefer to give the ice time, to a young guy, who has a marginal chance of becoming something at some point, than an over the hill guy, who's done.

PTO doesn't mean a guaranteed spot. The player would have to earn it. And if he ends up in the lineup, that means he outplayed the young guy.

You're thinking too deep into this.

Good Old JFJ has done some pretty decent talent evaluation for the Bruins over the years. Maybe if you keep him away from speaking directly with other GM's he isn't a liability.

JFJ drafted Rask, Kulemin, Reimer, Frattin, Tlusty, Holzer, Gunnerson, Komarov, Stalberg, Stralman

Most of these players were drafted without having high draft picks with exception of Tlusty

He will do well in Phoneix. He doesn't have Peddy to call his shots or Pat Quin who was power hungry to deal with

Wouldn't mind Chara with the Leafs on a limited role

Chara still has presence and leadership. Just don't play him more than 8 mins a game
There's no reason why Holl, Rielly and others can't play 2 mins extra a game

Problem with these old players that are bound to be in the HOF (Jumbo and Marleau) is we use them like they are in the prime of their careers and not in limited roles. We would be seeing Chara playing far too much, and when its time to scratch him, we wont because of his legacy.

yes, I understand what a PTO is. But ice time and playing time still isn’t unlimited.

JFJ got dealt a brutal hand. He wanted to do a complete rebuild of our team. He knew where the team was headed, and wanted to get ahead while a lot of our players had value. MLSE hired him, and then immediately forced him to follow their plan of competing, and trading picks/prospects for immediate solutions.

Now - he didn't do a good job, doing that, so he was never gonna be the GM to elevate us, but we would've been in a better spot if he was allowed to tear down the roster, and use his scouting and evaluating ability to draft with high picks.

His body of work wasn't even that bad, just marred by two moves fueled by desperation highlighting an inability to evaluate goalies.
