While I don't really want to defend Montreal media, there is quite a big difference between the Aho and Kotkaniemi offer sheets.
Yeah, that Aho offersheet was always going to be matched, as far as cap hit goes it's a damn steal, all it served to do was force an owner to shell out up front cash and piss him off.

The JK offersheet actually gives the Habs something to think about. It's a major overpay, but of course it is, if it wasn't there's no point doing it because the team just matches, see above. But are the Habs willing to walk away from their recent 3rd overall pick? especially considering how thin they are at centre.

Yep, the main diff is Canes will match. Not so sure about the Habs.

Offer sheets are still offer sheets.

Both of them were an attempt to sign get an RFA from the other team. I think Montreal's deal to Aho was the massive signing bonus up front hoping Carolina was too cheap to match.

KK is still a 21 year old top 10 draft pick and the Canes tried to trade for him last year, so it not like it's completely out of left field. They could have waited a year and done it to Suzuki. Montreal should be happy their revenge was KK and not him.

Look at the kids body of work though. In a redraft he probably isn't a top 10 talent. To overpay by 100% and then have to overpay even more to retain his rights in a year. If he was taken at 10 and had exactly the same 3 seasons would this be a tough decision? I am looking at him compared to Puljujarvi and Paajarvi that I have watched in Edmonton. Easy for me to say but I would let him walk because the start to his career doesn't seem to align with others who have had huge success.

It could still be Suzuki if they can't get a deal done before next off season.

I think the deal breaks down to, how much do teams usually pay for a 2C/3C at TDL?
I am too lazy to really look into this but I think it is usually 2 to 3 pieces. One of them is a 2 or 3 round pick, one B prospect and a later round pick, or One A prospect and a later round pick. It all depends on the market at the time.
Say Kota is available at TDL, what would be his cost? Is a 1st and a 3rd really that big of an over payment? If so, how about a 2nd and a 3rd? How about TWO 3rds. If TWO 3rds is fair payment at TDL, then a 1st and a 3rd for a whole season is not too bad.

That's nothing to do with his body of work or what I think he'll do in the future. My personal opinion is he'll never be more than a decent 3rd line centre, I see him having a career like another former Hab; Lars Eller - nice depth player to have but not a real difference maker. I would let him walk and not even think twice about it.

But I don't think it will be that easy for the Habs, it's basically admitting it was a terrible pick at 3rd overall, plus, as I mentioned they are already terrible down the middle, even with JK on the team.

Obviously Carolina sees something in him as well, no way they make that offer if they don't see some upside in the player. As far as the cap goes it's irrelevant, they have the space and like I said, you aren't getting a player via offersheet unless you overpay significantly, that's just the way it is. If he breaks out then they get a good young player for a pretty small cost - I don't see it but he is a 21 year old 3rd overall pick who hasn't exactly been handled well in Montreal. If he doesn't it's a late 1st and a 3rd for a full season rental 3C and you walk away at the end of the year. We paid a 1st and a 4th for an 11 game rental (regular season and playoffs combined) from an old broke down 3rd liner just a couple months ago.

Future potential aside, at over 6m, I doubt anybody would want him for free at his current level.

He looked decent against the Leafs but hey, who doesn't.

Dude is not very good and was over hype by scouts pre-draft
At best he may turn out to be Lars Eller. At best

PLAYOFFS are too small of a sample size to compare STATS only.

If you want to compare players in the playoffs, expand a bit on it.

My question is, if it's game 7 and the game is tied with 2 mins left, who are you putting out at centre - Tavares or Barzal?
Barzal. Why is that even a question?

Elliotte Friedman speculates that if KK goes to Carolina he probably has an extension in his back pocket for less than $6.1 million AAV. Same probably couldn't be said of the Montreal situation, which could really inflate the ask on Suzuki and Caufield.
