Or if SJS eats 50% of the cap

Good luck getting them to retain 3.5M for 4 years.

Evander Kane doesn't really fit but it could work if Kerfoot and Engvall are included. But then... the headache going into the next 3 years would be exponential.

I'm seeing a lack of effort, just try harder. I don't need excuses.

That’s kind of funny, I’ll give you that…. But it doesn’t change the facts.

You can’t balance the taxes when two countries are involved. Maybe, if all the teams were in one country, you could create a league wide tax pool to collect equally from each player and distribute it to each state accordingly. Across borders, that’s essentially impossible.

They were close to buying him out not too long ago. They have so much bad money on the books that they wont be competing in the near future so its not like his 3.5 mill will be all that damaging to their rebuild.

We currently have 850k in cap space with glaring needs for 2 top 6 wingers. The scoring depth on this team in non existent as is. Hope there are still some big changes to come
You’re off considerably. Capfriendly has every recent signing on the roster, here’s a line up with 21 guys (7D) and about 2.3 in space. Remove a forward and add his salary to the cap room and we have 3-4.65m to spend depending on who goes. Anderson and mennell can be subbed for other elc types of you want (Gabriel or Brooks & liljegren for example)

That results in the owners paying more money. That’s not a solution they go for.

You can't have it both ways, friend. You either accept there is an imbalance that favors certain locations over others, and helps provide the reason why salaries can be higher in the non-advantaged locations, or you side with the owners. Just saying it's an excuse doesn't cut out the reality.

It’s not just about who we unload. What does San Jose want I return?

He’s a better player than Nylander, so it’s not like he’s a bad contract.

I honestly believe the Leafs do not need to swing for the fences with a superstar acquisition on the wing. They have the talent in the top 6 to make anyone look average as they did with Hyman. Hence his payday.

As we made Hyman into what he is today, why can we not do the same for players like Engvall and Micheyev?

I personally feel Engvall would be an ideal fit next to Matthews and Nylander. Big body that can skate (better than Hyman) and shoot the puck (better the Hyman). He isnt afraid to lay the body and not afraid to go into the corners to retrieve the puck. Ultimately I think he has the potential to be better the Hyman.

I would focus remaining funds on rebuilding the 3rd line. Between Engvall and Kerfoot, you have the pieces to fill out the top 6 wing positions. Find legitimate pieces that know their roles on the 3rd. You signed 1 in Bunting. Find another winger and center to fill out the rest of it.

Thats how I would go about filling out this roster.
Engvall has half the work rate and determination as Hyman and seems afraid of his own shadow, the ole Freddie the Friendly Goat syndrome. Mik seems more determined and dogged in pursuit of the puck, but seems to lack core strength, which as we know, Hyman has as much as anyone in the league.

But I too am really surprised we haven't seen an LW1 acquisition and disappointed that we aren't being rumoured to be in on Saad. If Ritchie or Tatar competed consistently and had even half of Hyman's determination, they could be stars and would be fantastic on Matthews' wing. It's such a shame they lack compete and consistency, I really like both players when they're "on".

I'm not saying it's easy, but the fact it likely won't be done isn't because of the effort involved. Look, I want our players to give it their all, especially in the playoffs but a lack of effort isn't a good way to frame a complex problem. Looking at things like like cap structure, injuries, lack of fans,(some players seemed to really hate no fans, more then I thought would be possible), playoff officiating etc. Doesn't mean giving the players or team a pass, it just means looking at all the variables.

Ugh there goes one of my targets

100% should have been all over this to replace Bogo. He's not an amazing D, but he's big and throws some body.

I am not sold on Lilly or Dermott sliding over there with Sandin. This is a miss in my books.

I already said I understand there’s an imbalance. I don’t think the owners or the players care that much… and they’re the ones who have to want to change it. And even if they do care enough to change it, they’ll both want the other side to bite the bullet on the cost, so it’s won’t go anywhere.

I like the Dvorak idea

Would have liked Cizikas coming in instead of Kampf

Not sure why we couldn't keep Freddie at 4.5 over Mrazek at 3.8? Why not keep your players happy, isn't he pretty tight with Mathews and Co.?
Hymans interview proved he was ready to go but, losing Freddie over 700K? Damn...
Keeping players happy shouldn't mean you keep a goalie who has been awful 2 years in a row.

Freddie wants to be starter, Mrazek is a platoon goalie.

At this point, I think Nick Ritchie signing elsewhere too. We're legitimately softer than last year. Great stuff.

"We're looking to add a different element to our forward group"....my ass

He has no money to add anything. He has to hunt for bargains, and guys like that don’t usually sign cheap.

Fair enough, then please don't suggest that it is an excuse. It is a reality that has effects. Whether that changes or not, you believing not, is another discussion. Anyway, 10:30 pm here and I've got to dive into a show or I'll go mad. We're in lockdown here and things are getting worse, that you and I can argue this mundane stuff is fun and enlightening, but now it's time for a beer and a whisky and a little bit of Harry Bosch. Not great stuff, but it passes the time. Have yourself a good one. Cheers.

Nick Ritchie is literally out there. But instead he signed a Goon in Kurtis Gabriel...who probably wont play more than 10 games with us
