Perfect trade. Eichel needs spine surgery and Marner needs a spine.
win-win
win-win
Marner and Rielly for a Marner level D and a Rielly level wing.
But any Marner trade is going to be on July 2nd, he has almost no cash left on his deal after then.
So Quinn Hughes and Brock Boeser...

At what point do you stop stripping the middle of the line up and realize you need good players to support your great ones?Kerfoot/Ritchie/Holl combine for $8M. Insert Liljegren find two guys who can spark something up front.
Make a change there first. If it doesn't turn around you have to start looking bigger (Marner).
That's what I was saying though. If you can clear that $8M it would give you up to $6M to add a true top 6 player like Forsberg or Hertl or Gaudreau even without retention with Liljegren and a forward jumping into the lineup near league min.At what point do you stop stripping the middle of the line up and realize you need good players to support your great ones?
It’s time to make a move at the top of the line up.
Hypothetically if the Sabres are trading Eichel today, you are not getting a better player than Marner in return on the current market. Sure you can get 1st rdrs and prospects and hope they become the next Marner or Eichel but a smart GM would take the certainty.Dont see how Marner for Eichel is appealing to the Sabres, unless Eichels value is really f***ing low and they figure they could flip Marner for more.
Sabres probably wont be competitive until Marners contract is up, I dont see how he'd be sought after by them unless they believe they could flip him for more than Eichel.Hypothetically if the Sabres are trading Eichel today, you are not getting a better player than Marner in return on the current market. Forsberg needs a new deal, and that just forces even more ELC/bottom barrel players into the lineup. That's what I was saying though. Trading Marner for worse players doesn't make this group better.
I'm a huge fan of Reilly but you're right. If the team continues to stink he just HAS to be traded at the deadline. You can't continue to just let valuable players just walk out the door for nothingReilly is not a top pairing dman and will want to be paid like one, Trade asap

That's eerie how spot on that comparison is.
It's probably time for a retool talk. I would imagine everyone would be on the table except for probably Matthews, Nylander and a couple net positive players and top young players.
We'll see how things play out in the next month or so. Seems impossible but the Leafs could very well win 10 in a row... I have no freaking idea anymore.
At least we're sucking early in the season as opposed to late in the season.
Is it really that sad though?Dubas will be fired before Marner gets traded, he'll risk going down with the ship sadly; he's already doubled down
If Mitch Marner were to be traded, and he should be, and should've been traded this off-season, the return should be about maximizing the cap space, to allow several offensive additions.
Our defense has been, in my opinion, the strongest thing about this team since the start of last season. Ideally, it is kept together, with Liljegren replacing Holl in the top 6. Between Holl to Liljegren, roughly 1.2M in cap space, cap growth of 1M, and Kessel's 1.2M off the books, that should cover any Rielly extension. (including Rielly's current 5M, that would dedicate 8.4M). Liljegren and Sandin should get similar deals as Dermott did after his ELC ran out.
By trading Mitch Marner, we can ideally do the following;
- Secure some future assets, some combination of pick(s) and/or prospect(s)
- With additional cap space gained, sign Jack Campbell to an extension
- With the additional cap space gained, use it to improve the offensive depth - though, guys like Kampf, Spezza, Engvall, even Simmonds haven't really been the issue.
Some targets, I've largely thought would make sense; Calgary [they seem ready to make a major change soon] as well as LA [will likely be looking to start adding talent to that roster].
I won't begin to guess what a trade would look like.
