Also, what's the reason we are not re-signing Lyubushkin?
He might not want to sign here. It looks like he would replace Holl if he did and most have him pencilled in for #7D. Lyubushkin can sign somewhere for more money and play as a #4/5. I doubt even if the money is good that he wants to start in the pressbox.

Leafland
If the Leafs go with Murray and Kallgren/Woll that would put them at about 6 million dollar cap for goalies plus a 3rd round pick.

Are the Leafs better off like that or spending 6 million on a combo on UFA’s or a mixture of UFA and trading for one of Blackwood/Reimer/Talbot?

It’s hard to say right now without knowing what the cost would be to acquire in a trade one of those guys.

The UFA market is very suspect with Sasmonov and whoever else you want to sign not named Kuemper or Campbell.

I am not which then means they were probably better off gambling on Samsonov or someone else. I hope Murray bounces back!

100%.

But I think a team like Buffalo, who can afford to overpay, will sign him.
Watch Ottawa turn around and sign him lol. Insult to injury if they do.

He is a 6/7 who probably wants Holl money.

He is not worth it.

We are going to need some physicality on the back end, particularly with a goalie who has a history of concussions. I mean our other options include Schenn, Zadorov, Gudbranson, Peeke.... Are these cheaper options, or available in the case of the first and last?

Peeke and Schenn are under contract so we'd need to trade for them.

Zadorov might cost 4M and I don't know if he's more than a 3rd pairing guy

Gudbranson makes Liljegren a top 4 guy.

Not really that good, and cap space. He might be looking for a pay bump and I don't think the Leafs really want to. I don't think they'd go higher than 1.5M, and they shouldn't.

If they do move on from Holl, I think Lyub in a cheaper role would be a downgrade but his physicality could be a good mix.

I think they trade or waive Simmonds and sign Deslauriers/Lemieux for 1M per to upgrade on him as a role player. That is one thing that shouldn't be hard to do.

Deslauriers seems like a real reach considering what he brings. I just don't see Dubas going for him unless he's league minimum. But around 1M he can be buried so perhaps there's a fit. Leafs need to get tougher but functional toughness is what I'd gauge they want, not just a face puncher like Deslauriers.

Same for Lemieux in a way. Not sure I care for the reports that he's not a liked player in the room and the shenanigans he does (aka biting). He will likely also get more than just 1M too I think.

Or maybe they see value in Murray. Ottawa was rumoured before the trade to only be able to do 25% so it appears that a) trading to get a second retention was too pricy or b) they decided that the 17th most expensive cap hit for a goalie coming off a very good season was worth it to get for free + a 3rd.

20 games with .906% save percentage equates to a very good season for Murray? In that case, I'd hate to see what an average season looks like for him.

There simply aren't a lot of choices. I mean you can add Gudas to the list of people who fit the bill, but Florida wouldn't trade him. Hakanpaa as well. Schneider (ouch).

I think Liljegren will be a top 4 guy this year...

Considering the defence he played behind and the type of shots they gave up, it's pretty ok.

This morning my mind is going into a pretzel with the 2 options:

1st - I think Dubas has to have something up his sleeve to find some bargains and drastically improve the blueline, goaltending and bottom 6.

2nd - We're going to run it back with the same crap we had last year with a different goalie, aren't we?

I really hope that it's the first option.
