Are we trying to convince ourselves Matt Murray would be a good option?

Some are.

It's not a good option, I am mostly curious about what Dubas actually gets for taking on such a mediocre goalie with a bad contract. Not the goalie I would hitch my wagon to if my job is on the line.

They thought that last year when they protected him instead of McCann. They soon found out that the league doesn't view Holl the same way Dubas does.
We haven't seen that evidence of yet.

But it would have been cool trying to find a replacement RD for Holl with a $1 million when RD was the problem for years.

Of the available goalie options, I much prefer Murray’s term.
At 50% retained I much prefer his AAV to most of the available options.
Most of the available options have similar levels of warts.
I would love to know what the sweeteners being discussed are.

There are no good options. We're just looking at gambles. If he comes with a significant add, it might be worth the risk.

The significant add is what makes it interesting. If you can get them to add a solid young forward and you can add an experienced $1m backup, it might be worth the roll of the dice. If it blows up, Dubas won't survive a second goalie tire tire. Leaf fans can't lose.

2023 unprotected 1st. Go big.

That won't help us win this year. Then again odds are we are not winning so that pick should be ready by the time Tavares' deal expires.

Edit: if the Sabres deal for Murray involved a swap of 1sts and retention, then Sens would have to retain much less or Leafs add IMO.

The state of this board and organization.

The players talked about in this thread and the rumoured targets would be an absolute disaster. Patchwork value village assets.

Just dicking around a generational player in his prime playing money ball because you don’t have the balls to give up assets to acquire an elite talent at a crucial position.

Ya I could see a buyout then the leafs could easily try to grab him without thr huge risk of that contract

Yup, not good news at all

It's an interesting position the Leafs are in - if they are indeed interested in Murray.

Get a sweetener for taking him in a trade with a bit of retention OR pick him up for peanuts by signing him after a buyout

More now, they have less parties involved to help facilitate a deal.

Exactly, the Leafs hold a hammer in negotiations here. Give us what we want to help out your cap and money issues with Murray, or we wait you out and pick him up for even less when Dorion is forced to buy him out.
