at max retention would Ott still add assets coming back with Murray?

Probably yeah. Maybe not a first round pick asset, but probably a decent player/pick.

Maybe the Sens pay another team to retain 50% on it, and then they retain a little more to get Murray under 3M? I don't know.

Leafs/Dubas can be pretty creative with that stuff.

Ottawa was willing to swap pick #7 for pick #16 from Buffalo in addition to retention, so it better be a haul....

If this is the solution I’m on the fire Dubas train

It's hard to fathom what level of panic would be for a front office to consider a virtual non NHL goalie option in Matt Murray after a weekend when they could have jumped on Vanecek, Husso, Fleury or Georgiev for fairly affordable trade/trade and re-signings.

With Kurt Overhardt coming out and shooting down the Gibson scuttlebutt and Campbell negotiations stalled, you kind of wonder how badly the Leafs were burning bridges there.

Just saw Murray has 2 years left.

That would be a deal killer for me.

Maybe its a 3 team trade with the third team also retaining some.

With no retention, you'd almost need someone at the level of Connor Brown or an unprotected 1st to make it even remotely understandable.

People say old boys club but man, Dubas doesn't seem to have a lot of friends.

I don't understand why a GM would look at a great team that was held back by goaltending and think Matt Murray is the way forward. All he has to do is find someone reliable at it would be a huge upgrade, but he just wants to cheap out yet again
The only possible defense of Murray is that he's had big moments experience in the playoffs

Murray has delivered in the playoffs before.

We need a goalie who can win in the playoffs.

Well make the playoffs with ~.905 goaltending in totality.

If Murray who has played in big moments can be the one to deliver in the playoffs this is a good move

Murray@50% + 2nd for Holl

I think the sweetener needs to be at least as good as whatever we had to give up to move Mrazek. If it is, I am good with going from Mrazek to Murray.

Murray, like Gibson, is looking to return to form from 3 years ago. Gibson does not have the injury trouble and has carried a starter's workload, but he also costs huge assets, will come with a huge contract (both in term and dollars), and does not have anywhere near the kind of playoff success that Murray has had.

I don't think the idea is that Murray is our headliner, but rather as a part of a tandem with another reliable, but perhaps not "sexy", option. As I said yesterday, Dubas has probably seen what Campbell is asking for and it is simply too much for what he brings to the table. Kuemper is also likely looking at a ridiculous deal. And he has probably already sniffed around the trade market and the prices are either ridiculous or the guy doesn't want to come here. There simply is not much out there unless you want to go for a massive home run swing which is more likely to close our window than put us over the top. Murray is a massive home run swing which does not close our window if it doesn't connect, but may be less likely to be a home run than perhaps a Kuemper would be.

I don't "love" it, but I don't "love" any realistic option we likely have right now and I probably like this more than anything we can do outside of getting Varlamov.

You're aware OTT/BUF talked Murray retained and 7th overall for 16th right?

I don't know if a deal can be done without retention.....unless you traded Kerfoot and Holl but got back top prospects and picks on top of Murray.

I really think that Kerfoot would hold a ton of value to Ottawa with his cap hit of $3.5 M but a $750k salary.

Murray (50%) + Formenton I wouldn’t be too upset wirh
Murray + Fluery are the only two goalies who've shown the ability to play on a high intense and pressure filled team in the playoffs and have won being key contributors for the Pens.

The pens were kind of chokers before 16 and 17 cups. Murray and fleury were big in those cups

If Murray can have a big series and show some if his past playoffs self I don't care if he gives a .905% in 50ish starts since he'll still get 35ish wins with the leafs

It takes a bit more than just experience and mental toughness to be a good playoff goalie. He was great earlier in his career when he was also a great goalie, but has fallen off a cliff in the playoffs since then. He's also very injury prone and unreliable
