This is a tough situation where the supply just doesn't meet the demand.

There haven't been any clear cut starting goalie options that are can't-miss for the Leafs .. all have risks either age, contract length, or cost to acquire
That sums it up. It is a tough situation and frankly Dubas is going to have to pull off his best moves of his entire career here. No slam dunk option that doesn't have risks or costs to them. And he can't afford to get it wrong like he did with Mrazek in the first place.

I don't know what they do here. They need a can't miss result. Maybe it does involve a totally shocking trade that no one thought was an option. But hopefully they figure it out.

Dubas has just bent over and said to the players agents and GM’s
Have a go boys.

How in the hell do you let yourself get in this position. We are now desperate for a goalie and everyone in the league knows it. How dumb can you be letting mrazek go without having a replacement before hand.

If I’m a GM I’m asking for the moon in a trade because dubas has no options now.

If I’m an agent with a free agent I’m squeezing every cent out of him.

dubas reeks desperation at this point.

Not a good look for a team with limited cap space

Maybe, just maybe, Dubas has more information then you do about what's happening behind the scenes with this team and in negotiations with players/other teams.

Nah. That couldn't be the answer

I am expecting some sort of Leafs trade this weekend. Either of a goalie or a player going out to clear more cap space.

2022
2029
2030

Time is just flying by.
When was the last time we drafted with our first( not counting the kapanen trade) ? Did we get out of the first playoffs round by trading the pick?? And u guys already want to trade the 2023 pick in a draft with franchise players like bedard mitchkov ? What happens if matthews gets a season injury?? Maybe we can trade the pick at the trade deadline if we are at the top of the standings not before

Gibson is by far the best option available. But what’s the cost?
Would surely involve our ‘23 1st which is supposed to be one of the best drafts in a long time.

If we can do something around Sandin + Robertson + cap instead I’d be down.

Well, it was much lower than what they paid Mrazek, so if the extension was reasonable maybe we could have resolved that issue then and there.
There is so much hindsight here. When people wanted to extend him, he was above a .940 sv. %.

How reasonable would an extension have looked then?

Do a search on Dubas and that poster.

It's what you'd expect.

I mean even with Mrazek, teams knew the Leafs needed a goalie pretty badly. Mrazek's presence wasn't really giving anyone comfort.
Your right
But he was at least a last ditch effort to keep if we had to
Now we overplayed our hand with no options of getting lower prices

But when teams go with the less sexy option, they often find themselves in the same situation a year or 2 out.

Here's an example on why I think the Gibson situation could work out for the Leafs...

This goalie went from these save percentages and GAA in the past 4 years:
2.64 / 0.917
2.86 / .920
2.63 / .916
1.95 / .922

to

3.16 / .887 this past season.

The goalie is Phillipp Grubauer and he went from really good teams to a team that was ass.

Could it be that Gibson has struggled the past couple years? Sure, I would say that he's not been amazing. But could it also be that Anaheim has been awful for the past 5 years years and haven't finished higher than 13th in their conference? Yeah, I would say that plays a huge hand in it too.

Seattle would have probably been close to a .500 team with decent goaltending. Sure, they couldn't score goals, but they were defensively sound with the worst goaltending in the league. Pull up any Seattle game highlight on YouTube and you'll see Grubauer allowing at least one awful goal. The good news for them is he can't be any worse than that going forward.

As for Gibson, he definitely hasn't been good over the last 3 years. Usually starts off nicely, but then falls off a cliff. You could maybe argue that he checks out after his team is out of the playoff race. Or perhaps he cannot handle a decent workout, which would be concerning given his contract.

We pay our managers to have insight making decisions moving forward and we judge them on hindsight. What else is there to do?

You never say never, but chances of the Leaf pick yielding Bedard or Michkov would not be likely.

I think the trade was good under the circumstances and dubas had to fix a mistake so options are limited
All reports were fleury would have signed with us. Talk to his agent and give him a good offer. I know you can’t sign him but you can make contact and have a wink wink deal in place. Offer Guerin a third for his rights. Lots you could have done.

Offer a third to St. Louis and sign husso.

Why keep a third in a poor draft year when you desperately need goaltending. The guy we picked could bust or not be ready for 3 or 4 years from now.

What we did was get rid of our only goalie and let the league know here we are take advantage

I used to sell cars at one time. When someone came in and said my car died I need a new one I got every penny I could because his options were nil.

When someone came in and said I’m just looking there is nothing wrong with my car , I negotiated and he got a better price.

Thing I don’t get is this: the Leafs seemed to want to move on from Campbell and some reports had Husso and Fleury as their preferred options. Both ended up signing for under $5 million which would have been the sweet spot for Toronto. So agreed, why not just go the extra distance with the third and make it all happen?

Now we may swing back to Campbell, but it feels rather a roundabout path to standing pat. Or we just didn’t go above and beyond and get one of the guys we reportedly wanted.

Again, you are ascribing things that have most likely not been the case.

If there was any smoke around it, it didn't come from the front office.....

None of the goalies on the market are better than a healthy Campbell. Just sign him and make sure his confidence stays high. We need a new back up though because Kallgren is a third stringer.

Sign someone like Copp or Nishkunin to play with Matthews.

Nish Matthews marner
Copp Tavares nylander
Engval kampf helm/kase
Kassian Holmberg Steeves/Anderson
Cogliano

Rielly brodie
Gio lilly
Sandin Zadorov
Lybush

Campbell
Dreiger
Kallgren

Muzzin and holl can bring in picks or holl can be the 7d.
Did Bunting die? Literally no reason to get rid of him.

Kyle Dubas himself said he wanted flexibility. So that would indicate the ability to pursue goalies through signing and trade aside from Campbell which he said. What reasons would he have to not want two of the more coveted goalies on the market?

Driedger was very good in florida, grubauer was very good in Colorado, they both moved in seattle and both was trash... but the problem was poor goaltending... maybe the problem is not goaltending bu the team in front..

Ducks was the worst team in the league at the same level of detroit last 4 years ...

I think some people here think goalie are kind a robot without any kind of feeling... thinking goalie will play same way in front a team playing 1 good game every 8 game than in a team who playing 1 bad game every 8 game.

What real human do
-Playing harder in a competitive team than a bottom league team.

- be mentally stronger and more confident by winning game than losing game whatever what kind of stats you get.

-get much more motivation to come to arena play hockey and have fun unstead of losing all fun by being destroy every 2 game...

-lost faith in your team when they played like trash and losing and get confident about youre teammate when they playing great hockey and winning

Of course he was kicking tires looking every single opportunity. Eventually he’ll pull the trigger on what he thinks is the best option. Literally, his job depends on getting this right.

Wow what a necessary job a car salesman is, society would crumble without you taking advantage of people in desperate situations.
